I'm a WOLF | I finally learned to accept my sleep schedule
For as long as I remember I don't sleep according to societies' standard schedule. While we are told 'early birds have the day' and it's pretty easy to find articles on 'how to become a morning person', I feel more like this:

- I hate waking up before 10 AM
- I sleep 9 hours easily
- I love being awake at 2-3 AM - being hugged by darkness I feel most alone, most focused, and most creative
- I am not hungry in the morning 
- I am only feeling 'sharp' and hyper productive right about 3-4 PM - right when everyone is starting to think about ending the day

It took me only a few years working in different offices to realize *this isn't for me*. From back pains to neck pains to terrible *I-want-to-kill-myself* headaches - every job slowly took from my body, left me helpless, hopeless and incredibly unhappy.

After a year of headaches that only recovered every Sunday Afternoon, 12 hours before my next work week would start, I decided: *no more*. An old colleague of mine didn't know she had presented me a lifeline when she phoned and offered me a job as a freelancer instead of an office worker. I took it. Deciding my own hours? *Yes, please.* No more leaving the house at 07:00, feeling with every inch of my body *this isn't right I want to puke*.

I wrote a quite honest and vulnerable e-mail to my colleagues and boss when I resigned, ending with: "I'd rather work 30% of the hours at 100% capacity than 100% of the hours at my current 30% capacity." Just a few days ago I had told my two bosses of my year long torture, and I had kept it to myself for so long my throat was barely able to produce the words.

I was told *thank you* for my honesty and at least one other colleague decided to change her life after my, what she called, eye-opening example. *It's why I will always be a little more vulnerable than some think is comfortable. Vulnerability touches other peoples lives*.

#### I worked as a freelancer and it went so well, I decided this was the perfect time to go on a sabbatical. I received a new challenge: a broken bone in my foot that will never heal and made me have to rethink some things - *again*. 
As I was traveling, and 'at home' working as a photographer, two of my main activities were not a very viable option anymore. It took me a *huge* while to figure things out, and I found Steem after 2 years of trying to solve the puzzle. I wrote when I wanted, I was social when I wanted, and no boss was expecting me to make a *deadline*. And most of all, bringing us back to the topic I wanted to discuss: *I slept when I wanted*.

Apparently, if you leave me without an office job for 3 years my schedule ends up like this: sleep till 11 AM, stay up until 2 AM, sleep at 3 AM. Work all non-sleep hours.

#### It's perfectly okay, no-one is telling me to do things differently, but... 
I often end up feeling *guilty* after waking up late, and even though my head is super fuzzy those first few hours I end up going downstairs, drink a coffee while watching a Netflix episode, and open up my laptop so I can *start doing stuff*. Because, yeah, everyone else is already working for hours, right? And here I am being *lazy* and *slow* and fuzzy, *damn you Rosa*!

In the end I worked more hours than I did ever before, and also more days in a week (basically seven out of seven), working away my 'guilt' for sleeping these weird hours and somehow trying to compensate for lost time - time from sleeping, time from recovering from my physical accident thanks to which I earned *nothing* for quite some time... 

#### Until last week when I was frustrated that I couldn't seem to finish an assignment
I went to my favourite lunch restaurant with good coffee, determined to finish the assignment *once and for all*. I decided to grab a psychology magazine from the communal table while waiting for my order to arrive. It had one of those tests in it which I never fill out, heck, I'm a psychologist and probably know a better version of that test anyway, but this one was about sleep, and it was 1 PM and my head was still fuzzy... I got my coffee from the waitress and decided to [take the test](https://thepowerofwhenquiz.com/), just for fun. 

#### And there it was, the result, very unsurprising after reading the description: I am a WOLF. 
Wolves are one of the four Sleep Chronotypes defined through research, expanding on the binary 'morning person' and 'evening person'. About 15% of society is a wolf, and this Chronotype clashes pretty badly with society. A wolf *never* goes to sleep before midnight, a wolf *always* wakes up late (and certainly should not be expected anywhere before 9 AM!), is not hungry in the morning, is not really *bright and shiny* right after waking up, should only do some routine tasks from 2 PM till 4 PM (as they're awake then, but not at their sharpest *yet*), and is on their best between 4 PM and 7 PM - which is when their creative brains can produce great presentations or brainstorms with colleagues.

I recognized myself, of course, and read some of the tips: 

- Set two alarms, one for waking up, and one for getting out of bed. Make voice memos in between because *creative* thoughts pop-up in these 20 minutes. 
- Start the day with some water and a walk outside - The article stated *I would hate the world a little less* thanks to that

As sleep influences through hormones everything from when insuline levels are high and low, when the brain is fully 'awake' and when sex and hunger hormones thrive, there were some more specific tips, like don't take coffee *immediately* as it would disturb my brain from waking up, and not eat breakfast in the first hours either. 

#### You won't believe the relief I felt when I realized there's a whole group of people struggling with the same thing as me
Which is funny, because I'm a psychologist, and this is what it's all about right? We're all unique but we're all part of some sort of *group* that's basically pretty similar. Once you've found your group that has the same 'deviation from normal' as you do, you can start talking with and learning from each other. 

*But here I am*, feeling less alone, feeling more *accepted* (mostly by myself :P), and finally finding some 'rules' I can live by that actually *optimize* my day for my specific Chronotype, instead of fighting it constantly. 

#### So what has changed for me?
Mostly I have accepted to not do much 'brain stuff' the first 2 or even 3 hours after waking up. I slowly read up on some posts, I get out of bed, I *go for a short walk* as that helps me wake up my brain, I eat only when I start getting hungry, I accept that I shouldn't expect my best working hours to happen before 4 PM, and therefore only do some routine tasks until then. 

Having insights about habits and thought processes that go on for years or decades is always pretty powerful - we tend to get stuck in how we believe we should live, but tweaking life towards your own body, mind and soul should be our ultimate goals. And no, that's not always easy. 

Since I read the article I have been doing things I always *suspected* I should do but never did because *tiny voices were telling me otherwise* - it's pretty impressive how much society can influence your behaviour by making you believe *you're going it wrong*. 

I'm a thousand times more *kind* to my own deviation from the *norm*, and this will probably mean I'll find more productivity and health as I will adapt my daily routines according to what works best for my *kind*, my fellow Wolves.

Well.  I'm no wolf.  Maybe a coyote...  

I have a sleep disorder that affects my life.  For 12 years I took the medication and forced my life into the box that society demands.  I was irritated and owly and near unto crazy.  I had mostly quit reading and in the main quit thinking because I was drug addled and sleep deprived.

About 15 years ago I decided to piss on it all.  I just quit.  Everything.  Except of course, coffee :)  

To keep this from being longer than your post, today I sleep in two shifts and generally speaking a nap.  Roughly 4 hours per shift and entirely when  I need it.  I may be up one hour between or rarely as much as 3.  I am always in bed by 8:00 pm and up sometime shortly after midnight.

When the weather is warm I drink a half liter of water first.  Today I drink two cups of coffee in the dark (no lights) while my brain synchs with conscientiousness.  Some of this time includes meditation and some is used for dog scratches.  Sometimes those are the same.

I then write a minimum to two pages in my journal with the third cup of coffee.  Coffee is then on demand, sometimes less sometimes more but I'm never far from a cup until after breakfast.  Which is around 5 hours after I wake.

Creatively I am at my absolute best between the journal and breakfast.  It get pretty fuzzy towards late afternoon and basically do nothing that needs creative thought then.

I guess my point is that I've found my sweet spot, the place where I am happiest.

Thank *YOU* for sharing your story here too @bigtom13! That sounds like a pretty confusing schedule, but one that of course totally can work if you find your way out of societies demands. I'm also very happy to hear you quit the medication, sounds like you were going the wrong direction with those too :-/ 

This is the reason why I'm always a bit more curious about people who try to make money for themselves - they often have a story why they didn't really 'fit' in society, and a good chunk of those people try to find ways 'out' - ending up on the Steem Blockchain or somewhere else where autonomy rules :-)

i sometimes call it born and live in the wrong time zone. but i am sure it would be the same wherever :D
only problem that i have is that all that government institutions and banks don't want to work my working hours, so i have few days when i need to wake up earlier.

best (most fun) ideas i get around 4AM when i should be in bed but then spend a hour doing something that just popped in my head. 
And it is 4:20 right now, should be sleeping, need to visit some "normal" working people today. 

think it would be interesting from a psychologist point, how many of that 15% are extroverts.

Hahaha - yes, it really feels like being in the wrong time zone eh! We can apparently have an internal clock that's on 23-25 hours instead of 24, causing us permanent jetlag...

Yeah, I recognize that :D It used to be even worse, now I get sort of tired around 2AM :-) But still 'awake' till 3, reading up on stuff, calming my mind down... Just glad I'm sleeping well, I used to sleep really bad, waking up all the time.

I don't know, can go either way I think! Wolves can be pretty social till late (I can too), but I'm an introvert as well - so I can be social to late, but not too many days in a row ;-)

Hahaha - I know what you mean @crescendoofpeace! It's a slippery slope as well - I think I *can* go to bed at 1 AM if I work at it, earlier has never worked for me, but if I 'let go' I go to 2 AM, 3 AM, 4 AM... Easily. Sometimes it's okay, but it's already hard enough as it is and when I have some jobs in the 'fiat' world I do try to contain the hours a bit so people can actually reach me during *their* working hours ;-)

Interestingly, I took the test you linked to and was surprised to learn that I'm not actually a wolf, but a dolphin, which has a certain resonance since I studied whales and dolphins for decades.

And it fits, as dolphins only sleep with half their brains at a time, and human dolphins tend to be at their best performing mundane tasks after awakening, are not interested in eating for several hours, and then come alive after midnight. Check, check, check.

I also found it interesting that dolphins blend well with wolves, and I'm guessing that Marek may well be a wolf, though I won't know until he takes the test.

Hmm @soyrosa, I must be more like a chicken say, or the wild geese. I tend to wake with the crow of the rooster as dawn is bursting, say 6 am and feel like 'roosting' round 10 (though a bit late for the birds). 

It's good to find your natural sleep schedule as then your body is happy. Unfortunately unless you can work from home, this is often not the case for most people. 

Now I keep hearing "hungry like the wolf" playing over and over in my head.

Ha ha, it looks like my chronotype is Dolphin! Too bad I am still a minnow :)
Interesting guy this Dr. Breus and he got a few things right in my profile description but my experience says that sleeping habits can change. You see until 5 years ago, I had never been able to wake up before 9 without the help of a persistent alarm clock while I wasn't usually in bed before 2 am. And then it come the day that my partner and I decided to quit our jobs and our lives in the big city and move away in search of a more natural lifestyle. The next morning I woke up at 6 o clock in the morning. I thought I was anxious about the big decision I had just made and that it doesn't mean anything. But the day after the same thing happened and the day after that and so on! Today, about 1900 days later I think I can say, without any doubt, that my sleeping habits have changed in a radical and very impressive way. 
Maybe as a psychologist, you have an explanation on that :)

Ohhh - YES, I absolutely believe that changing your life changes your sleeping habits! *But* - I do believe that's because all those years when you lived in the city you were *not* sleeping according to your biological schedule, and moving out of the city was sort of a 'reset'. Many people live with artificial light, too few hours of sun... daylight... And it messes up our sleeping habits :-) You probably had to set an alarm because you didn't get 'quality sleep' like you do now :-) I'm so happy for you you found a healthier environment for you <3

And yes, too bad you're still a Minnow, can't wait to see you become a Dolphin, not just while sleeping :D

Although I never considered myself to be alone in this area of unmanageable sleep patterns, or general "night owl" schedules, I've always felt like there isn't enough hours in the day, and that its the reason I don't sleep correctly.

Wolves happen to be one of my favorite animals, perhaps even my favorite. No animal fascinates me to the level of the wolf. Really interesting association. 

So, it's always been rather confusing to me , and difficult to manage. For a while I was pretty obsessed with the idea that I'm suffering from delayed sleep phase disorder, but I've also been diagnosed with sleep apnea as well, so who knows lol. 

I just go with the flow now and sleep when ever I feel like it. Makes for a less stressful mindset. Of course life comes with responsibilities and commitments dictated by schedules, so it's not something to be ignored completely, but I don't stress it anymore. 

Btw, I just wrote a psychology based article on depression. I would really love to get your thoughts on the subject if your busy schedule permits, if not no worries, but since this is your area of expertise, I can't think of a better candidate to tell me how flawed my logic is 😀

:D Glad I gave you something to think about during your *sun walk*! Ohhh yes I've been called lazy for sure! And I've been calling myself that too :-) People try to tell you 'just go to bed early' (but I lay awake for hours!) and stuff too :D Such stigma.

Not every photographer needs or wants to take pictures of these :D Photography for me is being 'present' in the places I *am*, and making pictures is simply showing others what I see. I've never really made 'planned' shots, it's the opposite of how I use this passion of mine :-)

I can so relate to this. I've been a "night owl" all my life, and have never felt good waking up early. If left to my own devices, I stay up at least till midnight each night and would sleep till 9 or 10. Big yes to getting outside, too—water and nature are two of the best ways to wake up! Love this post, wolf sister. :)

Exactly *this* - and still we force ourselves in the 'regime' that's basically the same for all.

If you're the opposite you're Lion: awake before anyone else, does its best work until about 10 AM, needs proteins for breakfast and lunch, as they most of the time crash around 2-3 PM :D (Carbs speed up that crash). Some physical activity end of the afternoon helps you prolong the night a bit if you want/need to be social ;-)

Then there's the Dolphin (half awake/half asleep at night, most often have sleep Disorders) and 50-55% (! the vast majority!) are bears: those are the ones 'okay' waking up early, but don't go to sleep super early like the Lion, and therefore often have a 'social jetlag' where they have to sleep in on the weekends for lost hours during the work weer :-)

It took me quite a while to discover that there is something really mystical about being awake when the sun is on the other side of the planet. Much easier to go inward. Not long after the discovery, I found an article about the Two Sleep Cycle, that according to the author, was natural for our ancestors. Went to bed early, woke up for a couple of hours, then back to bed.

Glad you've found a schedule that works! Damn society does tend to get in the way. 

I'll take your 9 hours and raise you 1, I like a good 10 in bed! 

I can recommend an an app called sleep cycle - or anything that monitors nose and detects when you're in light sleep and wakes you up an an appropriate point in a 20-30 minute window.

You do need it on yr mattress for it to work best, or on a chair/ table right up close. 

I've actually got mine installed on my old phone and keep my main phone out of the bedroom at night.

Very interesting post @soyrosa.  Don't recall hearing the word "chronotypes" before now.  According to this, I am a Lion ...

I have known this (without the label) for most of my life.  My first job was as a paperboy in grade school.  The requirement was up before dawn, ride your bicycle down to the "substation," where you folded up your papers to put in your "saddlebags" on your bike.  Then, off you go to get them distributed, before the customer wakes up to find their paper on their front porch ... &#128077;

Although that was "a few days ago," I can still distinctly remember the marvelous sights and sounds in the early dawn hours.  Particularly the various birds who were singing ...  Great in the summertime.  A little less so, in the winter ...

Now, if that experience hadn't cleared this question of "bio clocks" up for me, marrying a farmer's daughter definitely would've done the trick, as she is very similar to me.  Probably from watching her father in the mornings, in his preparations to head out to the fields ...

Loved this article!!  The list fit me to a tee except for the sleep 9 hours part.

I remember being this way, from at least the age of 4-5 years.  My mother says I was always that way (as was she).

I took the test and it did come out Wolf.  Thanks for this article. Nice information.
