The Waraos are the last ethnic group that survives in the Orinoco Delta in Venezuela, in <a href="https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@soyunasantacruz/orinoco-delta-journey-waraos-indians-venezuela-viaje-al-delta-del-orinoco-indigenas-waraos-venezuela">this publication</a> I wrote about the trip I made to that area of the country, how was my preparation, sharing travel tips, the routes, the reception and part of the culture of the Waraos, but I missed something very important to define who they are and where they are.

The pre-Hispanic culture has as reference the one that exists before the colonizers and the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America, the Delta Amacuro state in Venezuela was constituted by several <a href="https://www.orinocodeltalodge.com/los-warao">pre-Hispanic tribes</a> such as the Aramayas, Arawak, Caribs, Pariagotos, and Panacayos, Tiuitiuas or Tiguitiques, the Mariusas and Waraos. Currently, all these ethnic groups have disappeared with the exception of the Waraos.

It is difficult to say exactly how old this ethnic group is, but it is believed that they date back to 17,000 years before Christ by the studies of ceramics found in their soil, all this makes us suppose that they are one of the oldest races in the world and in Venezuela.

> La cultura prehispánica tienen como referencia aquella que existe antes de los colonizadores y de la llegada de Cristóbal Colón a América, el estado Delta Amacuro en Venezuela estaba constituido por varias <a href="https://www.orinocodeltalodge.com/los-warao">tribus prehispánicas</a> como los Aramayas, Arawak, Caribes, Pariagotos, y Panacayos, Tiuitiuas o Tiguitiques, los Mariusas y Waraos. Actualmente, todas estas etnias han desaparecido a excepción de los Waraos.

> Decir con exactitud la antigüedad de esta etnia es difícil, pero se cree que se remontan a 17.000 años antes de Cristo por los estudios de cerámicas encontradas en su suelo, todo esto hace suponer que son de las razas más antiguas del mundo y de Venezuela.

<h2><center>Waraos</center></h2>

These people live in the river and feed from the river, the word Waraos translated into Spanish means people of water or boats. They are located in the jungle of the Orinoco Delta, which is a group of rivers that carry water to the Atlantic Ocean.

> Estas personas viven en el río y se alimentan del río, la palabra Waraos traducido al español significa gente de agua o de embarcaciones. Se ubican en la selva del Delta del Orinoco, que es un conjunto de ríos que llevan las aguas al Océano Atlántico

<h2><center>Culture and customs - Cultura y costumbres </center></h2>

Their activities are focused on subsistence based on fishing, hunting and fruit gathering, as well as the creation of handicrafts and recreation. 

Their main source of income is handicrafts, which is an art that goes back to their ancestors and is given from generation to generation using for their creations materials provided by nature, such as the moriche palm, which are used for chinchorros, hats, among others, do not waste any of this tree with which they even create a type of bread. 


> Sus actividades se enfocan en la subsistencia basada en la pesca, la caza y la recolección de frutos, también en la creación de artesanías y recreación. 

> Su principal fuente de ingreso es la artesanía, que es un arte que se remonta a sus antepasados y se da de generación en generación utilizando para sus creaciones materiales que les brinda la naturaleza, como la palma de moriche, que se usan para chinchorros, sombreros, entre otros, no desperdician nada de este árbol con el que incluso crean hasta un tipo de pan.

They do not have the habit of planting because that is taken care of by the birds and nature that germinates the seed giving fruit. They just look for it and consume it. 

During my stay I could feel the connection they have with nature, they are sociable and friendly, they welcome tourists with open arms and clean hearts. 

> No tienen la costumbre de la siembra porque de eso se encargan los pájaros y la naturaleza que germina la semilla dando fruto. Ellos solo lo buscan y consumen. 

> Durante mi estadía pude sentir la conexión que tienen con la naturaleza, son sociables y amables reciben a los turistas con los brazos abiertos y el corazón limpio.

<h2><center>There is no time or age - No existe tiempo ni edad</center></h2>

The Waraos are free of any social ties to which we are accustomed, those of us who live in the city, mainly because of the time factor, for many of the city dwellers is the cause of stress, feeling that we lack time to do what we want. <i><b>They do not have time, time does not mean anything, they do not know their date of birth or their age and they are not interested in it either, it does not serve them for anything and that makes them free</b></i>, knowing this I felt a bit of healthy envy. It must be divine to live free of time. 

> Los waraos están libres de cualquier atadura social a las que estamos acostumbrados, los que vivimos en la ciudad, principalmente por el factor tiempo, para muchos de los citadinos es el causante del estrés, sintiendo que nos falta tiempo para hacer lo que queremos. <i><b>Ellos no poseen tiempo, el tiempo no significa nada, no conocen su fecha de nacimiento ni su edad y tampoco les interesa, no les sirve para nada y eso los hace libres</b></i>, al conocer esto sentí un poco de sana envidia. Debe ser divino vivir libre del tiempo.

They have survival techniques such as making fire, drinking water from plants that accumulate inside and serve for when they are immersed for long hours looking for food in the jungle called water vines, there is also a plant called soap that when rubbed comes out a soapy foam for cleaning and washing, the latter is almost not put into practice because they prefer the soap of the city.

> Tienen técnicas de supervivencia como hacer fuego, tomar agua de plantas que la acumulan en su interior y sirven para cuando están inmersos largas horas buscando alimentos en la selva llamada bejucos de agua, también hay una planta que le llaman jabón que al frotarla sale una espuma jabonosa para asearse y lavar, esto último casi no se pone en práctica porque prefieren el jabón de la ciudad.

During my stay the travel group was able to learn some vocabulary words that I will share below: 

Karina - hen
Yakiribiara - good morning (greeting)
OKI Naria - I'm leaving
Yaja - Sun 
Waniku - Moon 
Kura - Star
Yakera- thank you 
Ma wëy- I am 
Ine ekeyra- I am happy
Io bönia- I love you
Manapãnay ajera- I have a pain 
Ma-jokaraisa- friend, which means my other heart
Emonikitane: to forget, which means to forgive
Mejokoki: the sun of the chest, which means soul
To say earth they say mother
To say mother they say tenderness
To say tenderness they say surrender

Their language is related to feelings, their vocabulary is as wise as some of their customs. 

There are also bad words like groceries, one that is popular in Venezuela is "coño" which means annoyance for something, and in Warao it is Ka jüray = pussy.

Su lenguaje se relaciona con los sentimientos, su vocabulario es tan sabio como algunas de sus costumbres. 

También existen malas palabras como las grocerias, una que es popular en Venezuela es "coño" que significa molestia por algo, y en Warao es Ka jüray = coño
