According to Oxford English dictionary, willpower can be defined as;

> The ability to control or reject desires to indulge in harmful and useless habits.

It’s also a path that allows people to decipher their decision and then with all seriousness they push harder till they get to their destination.

Furthermore, to get a solid example of willpower, think about school. Students need the willpower to control themselves to defend a good grade in school and pay attention in class.

Years back nobody cared about willpower rather they followed their natural instincts to make a living. Nevertheless, as civilization evolved, humans want to put things right. This started by creating rules for others to follow and by adhering to the rules and regulations they begin to get what they want and probably make a living from it. With this rule being applied, self-discipline became a virtue.

Late back in the 1960s professors proved that the key to success is practicing willpower

### The limited power of willpower.

Not everyone has a strong willpower, in some cases, most people have weak or low willpower, some of the reason includes the following below;

Past failures – Memorizing somethings we failed to achieve in the past slowly kills our willpower.

Emotions – Having some emotional trauma or a heartbreak from a loved one is another reason for weak willpower.

Physical condition –Probably we injured ourselves or were displaced one certain period also kills our motivation and willpower.

Above all the listed facts you may have noticed that even when we have an abundance of willpower, it still has its own limits. We exert this power apparently every blessed day to one thing or the other. Willpower, on the other hand, is similar to muscle, we get tired when overused. In quote, willpower is a limited resource.

#
How can one succeed with willpower

With the understanding that willpower has its own limits, then the next key thing to do is following a system inline with your desire to reach your dreams and goals. The system should be the first while willpower follows behind. Willpower is likely to be useless if you do not allow it to work inline with personal success system.

The word '‘system’'here connotes the ability to create the right provision in your mind and surrounding that helps you make your success and goals a surefire outcome. With this in place, willpower is likely to be an extra bonus in elevating you to your success. Just to be on the safer side, there are some crucial steps to build your own success system:

#### Create an environment that is conducive to success.
Willpower itself doesn’t place any priority on changing your environment, rather it exerts its focus on overcoming your environment. It’s no wonder that when the limited willpower tends to fail, people capitulate to environmental influences – regardless of their best efforts to resist. As humans, we are consciously and unconsciously impacted by what’s around us. It could be the news we read, the friends that we have, the stories our friends tell us, or even the influence our home has on us.

Your environment can also be used as a tool to support your goals. For example, if you want to be a hair stylist, surround yourself with hair stylists.

#### Know what makes you happy.
Most times we get motivated by the things that make us happy, that is very crucial. Take a look around at others, or rummage into your past, and you will find that willpower facilitates when people come across failure or encounter negative events. This clearly indicates that willpower is feigned by external factors, thus making it undependable.

The only way to stay motivated is knowing what makes you happy, this formula works perfectly – even when your willpower crumbles. Rewarding yourself after you’ve achieved a goal milestone ignites a feel-good record up in your brain.

Willpower is not the be all and end all we’ve been taught to believe. While it’s certainly a component of success, it’s nowhere near as important as all the self-help gurus claim. Just as I elaborated earlier, having a system and a goal, are much more powerful techniques in success than willpower.
