Not only is this geared at newbies, but it is also popular among the oldies, and this is because it is very simple to lose sight of what is important, which is always placing quality in their content. While navigating through various contents on the chain, you will see that, in comparison to the large number of articles published, just a few people are truly putting in attempts to do their best regardless of the rewards attached.

I completely understand that the primary reason we are on Hive today is for the rewards, and I am no exception, but it is always good to look at the greater picture above obtaining rewards and focusing on the quality your content has to provide to your audience. This is why I am never a proponent of rushing to publish articles or trying to make a deadline in order to obtain a curator's vote. If I'm not proud with my article, I'm never going to publish it till I'm finished with it.

Simply put your passion into your piece, and you will find yourself standing out and unique among the others on the chain. This will not only bring you rewards, but it will also set you on a long-term path. Your efforts will undoubtedly be noticed if you put up your best effort, and the rewards will undoubtedly be greater than you realize.

Yes, I write my articles in order to earn money from them. Yes, I live off the money I make from Hive, but that wouldn't make me want to spam articles or post in communities that have little to do with my material just so I could get a higher upvote. Why? Instead of pursuing my selfish impulses, I am looking at the big picture and doing my best to do what is right.

I've been watching some of the people I've onboarded and mentored on Hive from afar, and I always make sure to pass on every message of quality over quantity to newbies because trying to meet up with daily blogging deteriorates your quality over time, causes burnout, and even interferes with balancing your personal life. I recommend that you post frequently only when it does not put you under pressure.

What makes writing pleasurable is writing without pressure, clearly from your thoughts and mind. It is the source of the pleasure of communicating in thoughts. At this stage, you're creating content for fulfillment rather than enrichment. When both substances are consumed, there is always a variation in taste.

Posting in the right community is vital based on its niche. It increases the visibility of your posts and connects you with the relevant audience. I read a lovely article today by @erikah on [Why it is important to publish in the appropriate communities](https://peakd.com/hive-174578/@erikah/community-list-and-why-it-is-important-to-post-in-the-right-community), which goes into great detail about selecting the proper community for your posts. You should absolutely look into it!

As I previously stated, I have been observing newbies that I have onboarded and mentored from afar, and I have gotten to know those who are doing well and those who aren't. The significant difference is that those who followed this advise are doing well, despite both groups receiving roughly the same quality of mentorship from me.

Some have become completely diverted by the rewards and are now writing for the purpose of getting rewards rather than for the fulfillment of writing. They constantly wondering how I obtain my incentives, which I can't really explain but believe stem from the fact that I devote my time into following the advise I give to others. It's practically no secret.

So next time before hitting the publish button after writing each article, it is advised to ask yourself: _"Am I proud of this content I am about to Publish?"._

The truth is that doing what is right is one of the most difficult things to do, especially when the people around you are not doing the same but appear to be doing well. I strongly advocate remaining unique and pursuing what you feel is appropriate without first considering the incentives because doing so powerfully pulls you away from seeing the whole truth.

First let me confess that yes it hurts and sometimes demotivate when we get very low rewards  after putting so much efforts. Something that hurts more is when you see a low quality post receiving really big upvotes. At this point I ask myself , is reward the only thing I am on Hive. The answer gives me the new energy to keep on doing what I am doing. Had rewards been the sole purpose of my presence on Hive, I would have left long ago. Even if I don't get monetary rewards from a post, there is still a reward that I obtain and that is the refinement of my thoughts and skills. My personality is polished and my cognitive abilities are enhanced  So yes, you are right. In order to have a long term stay on Hive, there is a need to have a stronger reason.

I made a post, and I was so sure that this was it...like I took so much time and paid so much attention to detail and was pretty sure it was going to be one of my greatest posts...then I made the post and it actually got really low returns...I was angry and I was sad but frustrated most of all...but I didn't stop...then I made another post...this time I did it with a lot of emotion...I wasn't expecting much from it but I logged in that day to see my highest ever reward payout since I joined Hive...

One thing I've grown to understand is that you shouldn't expect too much ... always and always set the standard for your posts...what are you really known for as an author?...do you have a great sense of humor or are you really good at breaking things down...or are you good at making detailed posts?..find your niche and look for a community where you'll thrive and put in your all..make posts that anyone would enjoy reading or learn from and with time your consistency will pay off.

I'm tired of complaining and getting angry over another post earning more than mine even if I consider mine more valuable...what's valuable to you might not be so valuable to others...so keep adding your value till you finally get the attention of those that believe that you're actually adding value to them and they'll support you with everything they have.. 

Consistency is the key..don't give up!...I'm also telling my self this and I hope I keep reminding myself..

It gets me annoyed but do you know what I try to do to reduce the pain? I try to reduce my expectation in my articles although it is quite hard to because of the energy I had placed on writing the article. I just do this so that I don't feel so much heartbroken because it hurts so bad.

To be honest, the rewards were my main aim for joining Hive... I just wanted to write and earn money but in that process I got more hooked on the writing that I forgot about the rewards.

The funny thing is that it's even when I put in too much expectations for rewards that I get disappointed the most.

Even though I don't write daily, I like to keep at my own pace and write when I get the spur so as to put in substantial effort and quality into my content. So far, it has been working quite well for me.

Reading people's post daily and doing well to engage has also greatly improved my writing skills for the better. I believe that with time, hardwork, patience and consistency, it can only get better.

Thank you for reminding us that it should always be quality first!

I am a newbie here and I totally agree with all your points. It's true that everyone here is for rewards but when this becomes the only intention and motivation to create content then it is bound to reflect in the publication which is... not appealing. Content created with heart and a clear mind without a rush definitely speaks for itself. 

I am here for the long term, and I have a very clear roadmap on how to grow here organically whilst creating a good interactive relationship with other bloggers. Thank you for this post, it served as a reminder that content is king.

That pressure of missing out in the daily incentive is what move me sometimes to just post....and honestly when I'm under pressure I don't work well or better still I know I can do better.

To be honest,  I am seeing some article that has onnly great pictures but the message is small but with great rewards. I felt belittle because I did posted my hard earned post about things we do before 8 in the morning, with my own thoughts because I am doing it, and I feel sad not getting anything that much compare to that post. Don't feel bad about your rewards now, and don't compare to others who may have contents that seems less in quality to yours. They may have passed through this phase you are on at the moment and built relationships with people around. 

Right now, I think building relationships would be your focus now. Get to engage with people and post in right communities. This would help you in the long run although not immediately.

While reading I was just comparing the instances to myself and I discovered that I'm guilty in the aspect of not always giving my best but not because of the reward though. I have made it a point of duty to always make at least one post a day but sometimes it gets hard for me because I don't have too much time for that day, most times I just wait for some time because I still want something of good quality but sometimes I still don't achieve it.

Writing every day was as a result of me wanting to train myself to be better at it but there are days when I know I put in so much effort compared to other days though. I still want to keep doing what I do, but I will surely put in mind all that you've said.

Indeed @olujay is a great inspiration to me in the aspect of creating quality contents, with every of his content, I can imagine the effort he has put into it and I'm always impressed. Keep up the good work Joe, I hope to get better too 😊.

I also try to push content every day, but I have often failed at it. The thing is, there is a level of preparation and consistency that is required to fully enable one to deliver regularly with high quality. I have found that I am yet to develop that, so I work at my own pace to keep delivering as well as I can.

It may sound strange to hear that I frequently do not believe my contents are as good as they should be. But I am open to learning and keen on growth. So I just make sure I implement positive changes with the feedback I get on them.

Nonetheless, I really appreciate the kind words you shower me with. I'll be humble enough to keep growing so I can keep my people pleased and myself too.

That's right Joe, it's really hard to access one's content as good sometimes but with the feedback we get from people, it helps us know where and where we did well or not. Although there are sometimes when I judge my content by the number of comments I received too.

I've noticed that whenever I put my heart to what I do, which happens most times, I get positive feedbacks from people and that really do encourage me to do better at every other attempt. Yes, I call it attempt because I know I'm still at the base, trying to become better.

It’s okay to right everyday but not okay when the main reason is only for the rewards. For me, I would really love to write everyday but it doesn’t work. Not because I don’t have something to write about but it comes at a cost of forgoing other important activities. 

So I plan my activities and try my best to balance my life.

All excellent points raised by you. There's no doubt that one of the most important driving force on this platform is rewards but we have to keep in mind that good content and rewards are intertwined with each other and one shouldn't really expect any sorts of rewards without putting in his/her 100% everytime. Even after that, I'd not expect any sorts of rewards, because it's the expectations that pulls a man down. 


Writing from the heart wins the heart and it's highly possible that you'll get more engagement on posts which come directly from the heart. For me, making new connections and friends is very important as it builds a strong circle around me. The rewards will just follow. 


There's no denying that we all want a stable and healthy income but writing medicine content won't do any good. I'll end my comment here. You're spot on with this post and I intend on reading more from you.

Yeah, that's the main point here.

This is a great advice. I agree. I have actually had by blocks here because I usually have the feeling that what I have to share is not good enough. My long absences may be explained by one indecision after the other, plus a lot of presure in my daily life

You just hit the nail on the head bro. I have come to understand that when you write because you have that passion to write, it comes out differently. it is better I don't even write for a day than to put out contents just because of writing sake and because I don't want to miss out on the day's incentives. 

Again, I want to also add that sometimes your quality contents may not bring you anything. So to avoid this, just write because you love to write and because you want to also teach people one or two things from your posts. The earlier we remove this mentality of writing to make money, the better for us. Because that's where the pressure comes in.

This is so true! Happened to me many times but because I wrote to fulfil myself and be proud of how much my content is, I was able not to feel bad about it.

Oh, brother, sorry boss😂😂😂😂. It is so nice to always come across your articles. You’re a true inspiration to me and a lot of people too. My first days on hive, I came across your article where you talked about making quality comment and interacting well with people. I must say that is really helping me till now. 

To be sincere, writing for the rewards can be very tempting. I mean, the main reason why we are all here is to make money, right? Not so many people will remain here if money wasn’t involved. Although the reward is also a very good motivation. How do you think a newbie would feel if he sees 100 dollars on his post. Surely, he/she will definitely loose focus. 

Just like you, I also believe in quality over quantity (I feel newbies and even oldies need to know this). I try as much as possible to make sure I’m satisfied with my work before hitting that publish button. 

Although I post almost everyday, I make sure I spend hours on it and even proofread it before I finally publish it. 

What people don’t know is; when you improve your articles/when you write quality contents, a time will come when the rewards will come freely.

You have indeed spoken so well 👏

Chasing rewards makes us lose sight of the quality of our original content overtime and this will translate to spamming for reward sake, plagiarism/stealing great ideas to present quality contents (albeit stolen ideas), and disappointment when our "utopian expected reward" isn't forthcoming.

The more we say this or emphasise this, the more people continue to lose sight of that which is important and focus on the peripherals and trivial issues.

Many would blame the system, the "partial curators" *(in their words)*, the admins/mods and communities, the "publish" icon on peakd *(for leading them astray)*, Justin Sun, my little puppy *(which I don't have)*, and every other thing/person but themselves. They forget that their Greed is leading them astray.

However, when we think long term, we focus on the clear and overall picture, rather than allowing our subjective view to becloud our foresight. We focus on doing things the right way and doing things for long term.

Reading through @josediccus celebration of 5 years of activity on Hive and 34k comment on Hive, one can see how consistency and growth will really pay off for the long term. It isn't easy, but it is not impossible.

Well, 34k seem rather huge, looking at it. I think it's been more like doing nothing for me. people forget to have fun, watch the videos contents, rather than skip, make acquaintances and show real efforts. It's no magic, the secret is to have fun while making impact.

One reason why I can't really leave Hive amidst everything choking me is because I have made real friends on Hive.

When na only star I sabi... omo, I would easily be overwhelmed with all I'm doing and Hive no go dey the agenda, because there's really nothing for me there, except to find money.... and honestly, I'm not really the money freak... lol... I believe this will shock you small. 

If it were just the money, I would have been going on and off like before... but Hive dey help me overcome my depression now 🙃

What I sense is just people's inability to delay gratification. It's true that we're humans and we all love pleasure. Rewards on hive is a form of such pleasures that we seek. But the purpose is not for the rewards alone. It amazes me how people will rather focus on rewards and neglect personal growth. 

If you focus on personal growth, reward is inevitable.

@starstrings01, you have said so many things here that led me to self-examination on my journey so far on hive and I have promised myself to repent from my wrongdoings.

Before you hit the publish button, ask yourself if you are proud of the post you are about to publish🤔🤔. This is pure truth and should be taken into consideration by everyone both oldie and newbie, whether reward or no reward. This is because, our content is our image, thanks for this bro...I should be doing better!

Publishing every day to pursue rewards might lead to low-quality content for "some" people and this advice can save the day. Also, writing under pressure can lead to low-quality content and this has been noted too. ATimes it becomes so difficult to balance our personal lives while pursuing curators daily without necessarily thinking of quality over quantity, and by so doing, we find it difficult to engage as well which is also important in the Blockchain.

A very large number of us joined Hive mainly because we learned about such a space where "truly" monetizing one's content is possible. It is actually okay, really. But it becomes a big problem if this remains the (main) goal if one is looking to actually thrive. This is because to maintain steady results, one needs consistent and regular motivation; rewards won't give you that.

When people get their motivation from the rewards they receive, it's only a matter of time before their quality crumbles like the Wall of Jericho. This is a predicament that is difficult to get out of.

I can totally understand pushing to meet deadlines, or maybe "curation windows," if you will. But if one cannot look back on that work and not cringe, being proud of one's work, knowing that maximum effort was injected, then one should reconsider.

A type of motivation that would help is one that is innate: a type of motivation built in the mind that births thoughts like, "I should be concerned about building." The time will come when one will effortlessly reap the benefits.

Everyone has their own standards. Some are keen on attaining perfection, others not so much. But the top priority should be positive growth, and not declination and degradation.

Bro! I won't lie the rewards is motivating, eye catching and easy to stay connected to it when creating content. I fight myself to look away and stay on track. It's more little putting in discipline on staying true to quality.

Yeah putting your mind to the possibilities of a better future helps in putting your mindset in check and staying true to quality over rewards..

Hmmmmmm, I really enjoyed every bit of the words said on this post, I as a person have been a writer since my early days, I have been writing since JSS1 and then it was for fun but I was dedicated to it, I have been a lover of story books and one day I sat down to think about how they do it and that was how I took it upon myself to start writing stories in a 40 leaves note and present to my audience to see what they feel about it..

Lo and behold, it turned out well and I moved to oral narration, something I made up myself and to my greatest suprise it moved my audience to laughter and morals..

I have always love writing and since I joined here I am a man of lengthy post, many can attest to this, but I make sure my audience is my sole priority, I must dish out quality post even if its takes me more than 1k words, those that will read it will read it, writing a short post just seems incomplete to me and never ever have I valued quantity more then quality, my audience opinions matters and that is why I tend to write over 1k words on topics I have experienced...

I really love sharing my real experience here because someone might learn one or two things and I feel like it worth it when I get attention on it which makes me happy...

I write without pressure, I write when I am happy, I don't just write to fill my blog, I write because I have made it part of me and that is why I take hours on my post..

Though I write everyday but when I am blocked, I leave everything alone and either talk about how I am feeling blocked or just go enjoy some movie to get back in the game..

I am a full time hiver and that has given me time to work more on myself even when I was working, I still make sure I give out a fulfilling post..

I truly agree with you @starstrings01 , if anything is worth doing, do it with all your heart...

I spend atleast 30mins on my post reading it continuously before I click on the publish botton, and until I feel it is fulfilling I don't publish but when I am done crossing checking I do the needful..

I learnt a lot from the post and the comment...

I was reading a quote from a HIVE user today about one of the abuser on HIVE, it was `HIVE is not facebook!` I honestly felt that! If only people get the idea of how actually they can improve themselves along with countless others the scenario would have been different.

I am not sure what to add with the article as most of the facts have been laid out already. I also make earnings from HIVE and take out money for my real life but the dedication has always been there towards HIVE. There were plenty of opportunities for users who have come here from Steemit to HIVE. As we all love decentralization, passion and moreover community. Or else I sometimes peek into Steemit and see users who are not even worthy of calling themselves content creator are making hundreds if not thousands. Like many other folks in HIVE I do not want that for myself. I want to see what holds for me for the efforts that I give towards this community. Yes, the road was tough and will be but giving up was not an option for me. 

$$$$ can easily be made. Once a place for thyself is created! Until then thriving in the right direction is necessary. I am glad many new folks are walking towards that path. While some will drop out. Without passion its not really necessary to be here, I suppose. Unless one have deep pockets lol.

This is really true but funny at the same time. To thrive on hive it has to be by passion and as you said wanting to have something to hold on to. Also having a deep pocket, one doesn't need to be a content curator to enjoy hive!

Kind of doing the exact same thing! I have been improving few of my skills and getting to learn few others skills which were not my forte and if I get to acquire that not only my HIVE journey would see the benefit of it but also my level of expertise would spread world wide due to web. Wow that is indeed an impressive idea. I love it. Yeah, I gave up on few seeing their unwillingness and the way they wanted quick results after they started in here. I despise their thoughts tbh. If only they knew how much they could have learned in a long term thoughts.

I was also initially interested to write when I saw that people are getting paid for what they create. This made my first attempts to write purely for the sake of the monetary rewards.

This is until I slowly realized that focusing on long term growth and personal development was far more beneficial. Writing can be way of expressing my thoughts on things that I normally can't in real life. While at the same time, having the opportunity to earn from it.

I started writing without anyone mentoring me. I don't know about communities, the proper tags, and all the necessary things a newbie should know. There was a list of reading materials (posts/articles) that was recommended to me by the OCD team but I don't know how to read them at that time - I thought it was just a carousel of images. LOL.

In short, I learned the hard way.

This makes me a little bit envious to those who are being mentored and guided by people like you. If only had the same guidance, then my growth here on Hive may not have been stunted. 🙂

Up to this day, I am still looking for mentors that can guide on becoming the best person I can be at content creation.
