This low wall is right next to a well-trodden stone walkway, by which I mean that lots of critters like to use it: me, my cats, and toads.  I found out that the wall was home to a snake when it darted out to catch a toad.  I didn't have my camera with me at the time, and in any event, I was more concerned with getting the toad out of the snake's mouth - not to save the toad, but to save the snake.  Toads have poison glands behind their heads, and snakes have been known to die from that poison, with the toad still in its mouth.  This particular toad was also way too big for the snake to eat, it couldn't even get one leg down its throat, and the toad was starting to drag the snake out of its burrow.

The snake retreated, presumably to sulk, after I removed the toad from its mouth, but it eventually slithered back out of its burrow, allowing me to take some pictures.  This sneaky little fellow is an eastern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis), which is the most common type where I live.  They vary in colour quite a bit, and their namesake stripe isn't always prominent.

I like to keep snakes around, because they eat small pests such as slugs and mice.  My cats also love to play with them.  Perhaps I'll be able to show you that in the near future.  My cats are funny, especially Hunter Kira, the "killer cat."
