Steemit Retrospective for July
https://steemitimages.com/640x0/https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeG8tk69SJhg9MArPbrFTjEcDkxcQyLYj66NK2ZYtU3f6/Retro%20Post%20Thumbnails.jpg

At Steemit we perform monthly “retrospectives.” Retrospectives are conducted at the end of a “sprint” and are a time for teams to reflect on how they have been working with the goal of continuously improving their processes. We want Steemians to have as much insight into what we are doing as possible, so today we’d like to share with you a summary of what we discussed in our most recent retrospective which covered the past month. If you would like to see last month’s retrospective, go [here](https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemitblog/steemit-retrospective-for-june).

<h1>What went well?</h1>

- All ad slots are now working with our 3rd party service provider Freestar
- Hardfork 21 was released and the hard fork date was set
- Things went relatively smooth despite having a critical team member on vacation. This made us realize how well we do with 'shielding' other team members from distractions (because we ourselves were handling distractions that normally would have been handled by Michael).
- A lot of SMT work was accomplished over the last month even with all of the testing and bug fixes necessary for HF21.
- HF 21 Testnet caught bugs that we were able to fix prior to release. We have increased our confidence in this hardfork as a result of successful testing.
- Community developers and witnesses pitched in quite a lot with testing of the hardfork which lead to finding and fixing bugs that may have otherwise not been discovered.
- We (the engineering department) have been interacting with the community more. We've had both discord shows and posts from our own accounts in order to facilitate this communication.
- HF21 Steem-js support was released
- We were able to make headway on Hive communities by beginning to implement the core logic into Hivemind
- We decided to re-write the wallet proposals UI instead of merging in additional technical debt
- Released a MIRA performance tuning guide
- Merged in more community contributions to condenser
- Completed our first SMT burnup post since development on SMTs has rebegun
- Clumping ICO work in to a single PR made Steve happy and more productive.

<h1>What didn't go so well?</h1>
- Failure to keep steem-js up-to-date over time made it very difficult to troubleshoot a problem with integrating new SPS operations.
- Because we don't have adequate tests in steem-js for serialization we didn't identify that it was a problem immediately
- We've been unable to handle quite as many community PR's because of our focus on HF21 related tasks and Hive Communities.
- We still found bugs after HF21 testnet. API issues are minor, but the BMIC database revision bug is problematic and will likely lead to another release or retagging of the current release.
- Deployments are dependent on three cloud services to succeed. (AWS, DockerHub, and GitHub). This can be problematic if one of the three is down (namely GitHub earlier this month).
<h1>Escalations</h1>
- Check AWS billing heat map for next cost reductions as this has drastically changed since our last review.
- Look into the possibility of adding the ability to use an API key with the public API.
- Check AWS dev EC2 list monthly to ensure that there aren't any forgotten/abandoned developer test instances still running.
<h1>Your Feedback</h1>
What do you think went well over the last 3 months and what do you think we need to improve the most? Please leave your feedback in the comments section below.

@bashadow ·
Since this is a retrospective, and has nothing to do with HF21, What about this **Cloudflare**, I think it is called, when I use my smart phone to access steemit? Half the time it lets me in the other half of the time it does not, rather annoying,.

perhaps a post explaining it and why it is there and where we as users can go when it will not let us through. I currently do not have an e-steem or partiko account as a mobile back-up.

When you are seeing that it means that steemit.com is undergoing a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). That service is protecting the site from the attack.

Nowadays I get similar messages from a couple of different sites. All probably common DDoS targets. The bigger sites (Google and Facebook etc) probably have their own homemade solutions for these kind of things.

Are you all still selling 800k steem each month ? Last financial I saw said costs where 100% covered and you made profit from ads alone ? What do you plan to do with that surplus in funds? Buy back and burn ?

- What is "Technical Debt"?
- What is "a burnup post"? ... i understood the post but didn't understand why it's called this.
- What is "serialization" mean in the context used?
- What is "BMIC"?
- What does it mean to "retag a current release"?

I suppose if some of us understood some of the way you guys talk we'd have more feedback. haha

Selling less steem would be nice! :) Just kidding, well sort of. In all seriousness you guys seem to have gotten a lot done and things seemed to have changed for the better over the last couple months. Keep up the good work!

or sometimes buying back the steem they’ve sold, since cost reduction has been a success and personnel costs also reduced I believe after the 70% cut. If everything looks so good.

Hi! I just joined the Steem community to produce more video content on D.tube. I am actually porting in from YouTube and Vimeo streaming space. I thought this was going to be a difficult ordeal, with a steep learning curve, but I am very pleased with the experience. I haven't used D.tube long enough, but I will vlog the experience as much as I can. As always, keep up the awesome work!!

It's important to distinguish between price and value. Markets determine prices and are often irrational. We believe that the Steem blockchain is far and away the best blockchain protocol for powering web applications and we believe that this makes it extremely valuable. Whether the market reflects that value is a question for the market.

*nod* - it's by far the best toolbelt on planet Crypton - but what people *want* is money-while-sleeping, i don't think a lot of people see the difference between a hyper-inflated utility token like steem or a capped foundation like BTC which has been around for ... well since some of them were still playing lego and playmobil if you'll pardon my french.

Despite that, the cohesion in "the group" (that's not steemit inc. im talking about) is seriously lacking. There's not a thing in the world that can compare to the power of steemchain/condenser and the lot afaik at the moment and the "alt"-coins are just marketed clones of the original with a twist , i dont see much happening there but tokens "based on", but they DO sell, and they sell because there's more digits to it. More digits attracts bigger money.

I think moving to advertising was not one second too soon there. Steemit itself is the biggest dumper of its coin so if steemit itself can rely on alternative income as primary source that should make a difference, but i'm sure the fortune 50 have a hand in it with "expenses" as an excuse. 1 million plankton wont make a dent to what one whale can dump overnight and that's a fact. You do understand @andrarchy, the bulk of the population are not tek-heads and the guys with a suit and tie in the profile picture ... they're not tek-heads either ... its a bit of a hackers drool-tool (in the good sense of the word, as you can bend it and do stuff with it that its like not supposed to do and all that, because when you say hacked you immediatley get hollywood-conditioned visuals ofcourse) but to most that doesn't matter ...
Please don't over estimate the willingness of the bulk mass and certainly not the tek-savvy. People want the dough, man ... its the magic word "crypto" that became equivalent with nouveau riche.
At the risk of looking hightower, i think you could sit here explaining for two weeks just what a fine piece of marvelous technical masterpiece the steemchain is with its apis and the js and python interfaces but to most people you might as well be speaking Latin or Ancient Greek.

The move to ads was definitely good, i have my doubts about HF++next b/c it feels like a move by the fortune 50 to salvage, which will end up in more for them, less for the rest but i'll see that when it's there AND
(gotta mind my rc heh ...)
"onboarding the masses" is good, but expecting the masses to behave like the few is delusional (im not sure what the correct incrowd word is for that but it should describe what i mean)
look at it this way : Fudbook and Blitter didnt get to where it is by 'supreme content' or the greatest new tek available in some section, it got there by sheer mass and numbers ... i think the downvoting is a real bane ... especially if you were to have two major brands competing ... including the groupies and all that ... its real money we're talking about after all, the equivalent of

that's in the way, steemcleaners is in the way, misterdelegation should be named miserdelegation as it uses all that power for enforcement instead of promotion and support ... lots its wrong and stuck from the early days when it all came for free, right, the fortune 50 could just sit on their arse and actually *make money while sleeping* ... that's over now ...

i think you should be cold-calling about every brand and business on the planet to convince them why they need a steemit account and what it can do for them
i think you should ring Gabe Newell from Steam to inform him on the possibility of micropayments at lightning speed with ZERO (many exclamation marks, people LOVE zeroes, more so when they come to the rightside of the number) transaction fees ... but that's not the tek-head job, right ?

who IS the marketing dept of steemit anyway ? all supreme marketeers i see in the trending section seem to be selling a lot of air on "how-to" while raking in the dough for themselves

and then some heh ....

to me its about the best thing since BTC itself but that's a world for the elite now, so is this partly but it's just too much of an interesting cool new toy to play with ... i'm gonna develop my game wether steem hits back to $5 or drops to 0.01cents but a lot of people will flee if that happens.

Can't you give grant cardone a call or something ? tell him he can have a share if he sells the stuff .. that way he gets more the more he sells :p , you need bottom input, continuous because you have hyper-inflation , the supreme tek is not gonna change that and

the masses dont just want the likes , they can get that on fudbook and more of it, they want the dough, if even that dollar a day, which is ... far away these times

omg this is gonna kill my RC, anyway (im not in the habit of checking replies lately, it might be a week a month or not so if you do, dont overdo it hahah)

that was supposed to be my 2 cents, but its a fiver again isnt it ...

As I see it, it's better to keep steem under some other coin in steem engine. Surely you will have more monetary value under your account in few months as if you keep it in steem. Andrarchy does not care about that. We, the users do.

Does the amount of Steem sold by Steemit Inc. in a given month depend on expenses or is it a set amount no matter what and the extra is saved for when needed?

If it is dependent on need, is it at all helpful for steemians to purposely click on ads? I don’t click on ads but if I knew every click meant less Steem sold in the marketplace I would make a point to click on a few per day. I don’t even know if clicking on the ads improves your ad revenue.

sssh ... they'll say you're a commie and the stasi will come get you .. .pretty much true but it's alsto pretty much true part lies with "the community" which isn't as much a community as the outer layer would lead one to believe. First mission of steemit, as they are in a *financial market* here, is money to survive, or they can't provide the service, second is making sure it's attractive enough so people CAN MAKE MONEY FROM IT , or else change the frontpage to "post content, get downvoted by steemcleaners if you dont follow the rules set by five people three years ago" and while you're at it "buy steem so the fortune 50 can dump it in the name of 'expenses' ... i <3 STEEMCHAIN ... but they seem to have this idea that "the masses will save them ... i thnk that's a bit off, there's a core of people and there's the usual 10 to 1% making about 99% of the money, so they get the responsibility to make sure they hand out tasks so the rest can make a buck, but sometimes competition leads to choking new projects in the cradle too.
IF you expect the bulk of your 1 million accounts to suddenly twist their life so the company can make more ? THAT doesnt look right ... if i buy 50 euros worth of steem a month(which for my budget is a lot) and i see it decline every time it gets to 40 cents, i can imagine other, less interested or motivated people wont
it's the big ones and the company who whill have to do most of the moneymaking and its the masses who provide the bulk ... the censorship is a huge problem imo but be real ... the rich won't hand it all away , that's just not happening, but at the moment they're eating their own foundation and expect a sea of plankton to fix that for them ...

not happening

i shouldnt talk when im this tired and just saw a "featured" post on steemnazis ...
but i guess i did ...

People have to bring value to it, its a hyperinflated token, if you dont get continuous bottom input there's no other way but down that's possible BUT that doesnt mean one-sided, anyone who's able can bring value, or try, but the company and the fortune 50 have the clout, in times like these competing to dominate is detrimental to the whole , i try to bring value trying to develop a game that requires steem, because that's something i can do, even at bumlevel with a few old pc's . But plenty of self-proclaimed 'investors' here just sit around waiting on a pile of steem, but not actively trying to erect or develop OR support projects ... how will steem grow if you sit on it ?

like and egg to a chicken maybe ? money's gotta move, man, money is incentive and I for one don't have it, so i can't sponsor shit ...

miser delegation could ...

insted of wrecking, be maecenas ... doesnt mean handout, you get the delegation system, you can support people with a startup boost, and withdraw the moment they no longer show dedication BUT DO KEEP IN MIND, rich fuckers ... lots of Cryptonites have this thing for independence and freedom ... if you expect them to kiss the bishop's ring and pay tribute to the lord it might not go as well as you might want it to ...

cryptonite millionnaires live in treehuts lol ... among other things ... satoshi himself just fucked off after giving like the next invetion since running water ... that should tell something

gods its 6am and here i sit talking , wasting time on something that gets me nothing

and ofcourse :

![244.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbSPetVdgEWXzDzesfSRs9fq8JbAjULtbi5e9gEP6eCmG/244.jpg)

the usual :p

people with clout can energize and give incentive, even they have nothing but money for talent, people with talent can create and the company ?

well they need to grow , outward, and consolidate in time before moving further, and the fortune 50 ?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

no comment , heh ... there's a few i could laud but its a jealous competitive psychopath bunch
as always at that level

gud , nite nite :)

steem wont grow by sitting on it, the masses wont save you, entrepreneurs and REAL investors who put their clout where their mouth is

no risk = nothing to gain
