[CLASSICAL MUSIC] On Brahms's Second String Quartet 🎻

Admittedly, there are compositions by Brahms (1833-1897) that are more indispensable than the three string quartets, but at least the first two, which were published simultaneously under the same opus number, holds that Brahmsian warmth that is difficult to do without once you've come in contact with it. The fact that Brahms rejected twenty (!) quartets and then for many years revised and perfected the two Op. 51 quartets before they were published, shows the deep respect he had for the genre. Of course it's also in line with the devastatingly severe self-criticism of the composer. Brahms spent at least fourteen years completing the first symphony, much due to this notorious doubt in himself. A certain kind of seriousness radiates from this quartet in A minor, which doesn't prevent it from sparkling. In fact, it has everything that we associate with Brahms and his melodic and harmonic artistry, including the danceable drama of the last movement. Compared with the first C minor quartet, the second one is both more lyrical and more polyphonic, two characteristics that one might not at first associate with one another.

It was performed for the first time on October 18, 1873 by the famous Joachim Quartet. Brahms had worked onboth of the Op. 51 quartets during the years 1865-73, but sketches for both of them had been around for about 20 years. The quartet contains many allusions to the friendship between himself and Joseph Joachim. In the first movement the notes F, A and E and F, A and F are interwoven. They stand for Joakim's motto "Frei aber einsam" (free but lonely) and Brahms's "Frei, aber Froh" (free but happy). The last movement draws inspiration from both Hungary (Joachim's homeland) and Vienna.

Enjoy the gorgeous performance of the A minor quartet by the Jerusalem Quartet below.
