Blocky Doctors

You could say that our family are into Doctor Who. When it restarted with Christopher Eccleston we got our kids into it. Since then we have been to exhibitions and some shows, but not to a convention yet. We have quite a lot of merchandise. There were comics that have mostly been thrown away that came with all sorts of plastic junk. There are lots of books and we have a big set of figurines that I have posted about a while back. Today I am covering some buildable items.

This box is from a company called Character Building.

Inside we find 'mini-figs' of eleven Doctors. Most come with a sonic screwdriver. We have not opened it and so all the parts are still there. They would be easily lost. It does not include the latest two Doctors, but was up to date at the time.

Here is another box from the dominant building block company, Lego. My other half actually won this in an online contest.

We have built this one and it sits amongst various other items we have accumulated. It has both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi plus Clara, Daleks and weeping angels. It seems appropriate to have it next to a clock.

The Tardis doors convert into a mini Tardis that is being watched over by Death and a dragon.

I expect there have been lots more sets on the same theme, but we are not obsessive collectors. Now the kids are grown up we do not buy as much of this stuff. I did think of this item that someone bought us. It is signed by Doctor number four, Tom Baker. We went to see that special episode at the local cinema when it was first broadcast.

We grew up watching Tom Baker travel the universe, so it has special meaning to us.

It occurs to me that Doctor Who does not have a catchphrase like Star Wars or Star Trek for me to end with. Fancy a jellybaby?

I watched the season or two with Eccleston and then I haven't gotten back into it yet.  I heard the next Doctor was really good, but I just haven't circled back.  There is a house out in our school district that has a Tardis sitting in the front yard.  It is pretty cool, they did a really good job on it.  When I was at university the Unix server that we had to do most of our email and C++ work on was called Tardis.  I didn't understand the reference back then, but I do now.

Eccleston only did one season. It's worth checking out some of the others. There are so many episodes now it's hard to pick any out, but I am sure there are lists of recommendations out there.

I thought the Capaldi era had a great cast suffering from mostly bad scripts. I haven't seen anything with the new lady doctor, so I have no opinion whatsoever there.

As for prior doctors, Eccleston deserved another season, because the first is always a sort of shakedown cruise where everyone is figuring out what works and what doesn't on the fly.

Tennant was great. Full stop. And Donna was his best companion.

I quite liked Matt Smith's tenure. The Doctor/Amy/Rory trio was a lot of fun. Much as I liked Tennant's run, I think Smith might take the cake as the best Doctor of New Who.

If you are a person who cares about continuity,
hell, if you are a person who cares about the previous doctors
do not watch the new lady doctor.

They destroy everything, everything good about Doctor Who.
Turning many a die hard Doctor Who fan into people dead inside.

I think I heard Eccleston didn't want to do any more, but I think he did a good job. Tennant may have been the best, but I thought Capaldi played it well. I didn't take to the latest one as much, but I think they have all had some good stories. Were you one of the generation who grew up when it wasn't on TV? The new ones are very different to when I was young. There are some really good stories and some that are not so good. Sometimes they get too complicated with the plots. but it's generally fun.
