Claiming Steem accounts to give away

Over the last few months I've been claiming some Steem accounts. This is not quite as obvious as it should be, but it should be useful if you want to get some people signed up to Steem without them having to pay or to wait to be approved.

The method I'm using is via a link that I got from @slobberchops. It passes a set of parameters to SteemConnect. To use it just substitute your user name for mine. Note that you need a few thousand SP for this as it will hit your resource credits hard. I think I can claim one or two accounts each week.

This takes you to the following screen and then you need to sign in with your active code. There's a confirmation screen to prove it worked.

One way to check how many acounts you have claimed is on [SteemWorld](https://steemworld.org/). This also lets you claim them, but I've not done that so far. I've just seen they are using [Steem Keychain](/steem/@yabapmatt/hate-putting-private-keys-into-websites-introducing-steem-keychain) rather than having to log directly into the site. That's good progress. We need trustworthy ways to authorise transactions.

What I have yet to do is to actually create a claimed account as I don't have a recipient yet. Maybe I ought to try creating a utility account for myself. It looks like SteemWorld gives you all the keys for the account. If you are doing this for someone else then you need a secure way to give them the keys and then they need to change them to be sure you cannot access it. I'm looking for a good guide to doing this as it has to be something a less technical user can manage. There's [some information on Steem Center](https://www.steem.center/index.php?title=Steem_Key_Management). There's also [this old guide](/steemit-guides/@pfunk/your-steem-account-is-worth-money-how-to-secure-it-with-a-new-owner-key-to-keep-it-yours-forever) by @pfunk. If you know of a better guide then please let me know.

Of course we need to make it very clear to new users how important it is to keep their keys safe. I'd recommend using a password manager such as [Lastpass](https://lastpass.com) so they are secure until you need them, but it may be worth actually printing them out to put in a safe or on a flash drive.

I know various projects and dapps are claiming lots of accounts to give to their users, but are individuals doing this too? If you are then I'm interested in your experiences and any tips. I'm going to make a concerted effort to sign some more people up this year and I want to make it simple for them if I can. My plan is to delegate some SP to them to get them started as they will be very limited otherwise.

You can send an emailed invite link to them if you do not want to name the account or handle keys. You can set a time of the invite being available and seen as a decline if not used before set time. 

You can also have a set delegation of SPs set up, if the invite is excepted.

I have yet to create one yet too and am up to 34 or so now. What use they will have, who knows? It's like we have to bribe people on here now and give them a delegation to do something. 

The accounts you create can be traced by you or me as the creator so there's no making fake ones for mischievous endeavours.
