I guess it's not such big news that another probe has made it to the red planet and is launching a module to the surface, but this is still exciting. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter will map methane there to try and work out if it is geological or from some form of life. The Schiaparelli module is on its way to the surface where it will take more readings, but it's not designed to last long. The ESA scientists need to prove that they can land something before sending a rover in 2020 that will do some drilling. Any life would have to be under the surface due to the radiation.

Image from Wikimedia

There was a report on the current mission on BBC Inside Science, which I listen to as a podcast. They also talked about how the Curiosity rover is being kept away from where there might be liquid water to try and avoid introducing any organisms from Earth. There's a chance some have survived the trip.

Some of the hardware for these missions was developed a few miles from where I live at Airbus in Stevenage. They have a simulated Martian landscape there. We saw one of their life-size models at an exhibition a few years back.

There must be a fair few probes on and around Mars now. I don't know how many are still active. Perhaps people will get there one day, but it will help to know more about it.

For now Bowie's question is still unanswered.

I have read so many theories about mars being at one time habitable, but I just don't see how it's possible. People think it's just about the heat. No, that is helpful, but life survives in the poles on earth quite well... But there is no substitute for a proper magnetosphere. It's almost a certainty, in my view, that there is life living under the ground of Mars, and likely it exists on several other planets, most likely jupiter and its moons. We have life here in extreme depths of ocean, next to vents that make enough sulphuric acid to eat most things, yet there is organisms that live in these places. There probably is some almost anywhere, but one thing that guarantees no life is radiation. And why have we not been back to the moon in over 40 years? Hmmm?

Yeah, we know that life can survive in extreme environments, but it needs the right conditions to get started. Earth happens to be ideal, but I don't know if we can be totally certain about where it kicked off. I'm just not up on all the current science. I know there's all sorts of 'theories' about the moon. I'm not getting into those. Have you read Seveneves by Neal Stephenson? I'm reading it now and there's lots of space science in it. Living off the Earth is not easy.
