New Pi installed

As I [mentioned yesterday](https://steemit.com/raspberrypi/@steevc/frustrating-raspberry-pis) I've been planning to upgrade the Raspberry Pi running my home automation from a Model B to a Pi 3. That should have ample processing power to handle all I need. As you can see below it's now in place. It's using a [Pi Cobbler](https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/adafruit-pi-t-cobbler-plus-kit-breakout-for-raspberry-pi-b) to attach to a breadboard where all the PIRs and door switches are wired up. The USB cable is to an [X10 controller](https://www.x10.com/) via an adaptor as it's got an old serial connection. That turns my lights on and off.

Those boards above it are the old Comfort system that I used to use. This is now redundant and I may rip those out soon. I doubt they have much value to anyone.

I've installed the latest version of [Home Assistant](https://home-assistant.io/) and copied over my configuration files. I need to change a few things that don't work with this version and try out some of the newer features. I see they just added an [automation editor](https://home-assistant.io/docs/automation/editor/). I had been thinking this would be a useful feature as setting things up manually in the config files can be a little hit and miss.

I will find some use for the old Pi. These things use so little power that there's no real issue with leaving them on all the time. I heard from a few people on the previous post who use them for VPN, mining or playing old games.

Great post Steve, I don't know a ton about IT stuff but the Pi's have always fascinated me.

I would think a guy like you that knows a bunch of this stuff could do real well by mining coins on your own for sure!

Mining tends to need lots of power and may not pay for itself. I know you can get dedicated devices for it, but I've not tried that

We've used our original PI for a variety of projects, TV being one of my favorites. My son just received a PI3 in the mail and is setting it up as a income earning masternode.
