I suggest you buy a used laptop (with 64-bit processor) and try different flavors of Linux. Anything in the [Debian](https://www.debian.org/) family has lots of community support and not too much of a learning curve. [Ubuntu Studio](https://ubuntustudio.org/) comes with lots of useful stuff. [Kubuntu](https://kubuntu.org/) has a familiar Windows-like layout.
