The mighty Micro
When I was at school very few people owned a computer. I was taught BASIC programming using a terminal that printed everything (no screen) and was connected to the computer at the local college via a telephone line. Around that time lots of home computers became available. Each used a different operating system so games and applications for one would not run on another. They all had BASIC, but that would vary too. I lusted after various machines, but when the [BBC Micro](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Micro) appeared it was very appealing, despite the high price. Unlike some others you had a proper keyboard and it had lots of interfaces.

![Beeb](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/BBC_Micro_Front_Restored.jpg)
Image from [Wikimedia](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BBC_Micro_Front_Restored.jpg)

I had a lot of fun with that computer playing games I bought (or copied!) and writing my own programs. I read about fractals like the Mandelbrot set and decided to write my own version. I think it would take hours to generate an image like this, but then it had a 2MHz CPU and only 32kB of RAM, much less available when using high resolution graphics.

![Fractal](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Y66HohoqK3ZyL6Jv-KdCANmnJMxfs-3KxquJq8zd4c0art4ujwoKvhkBpusOXGXc_J2sgChd3ueXVQKbetlLyMXW6H3NTYZUijb7mwMDAiFnYHWyBUW2PVEe36fzOVmI-UXxI3iF6cTq1CuFsNLtiyKhLTrq4S-Vr5YvVtm03vUdDzyN9nNHBOEWQZLK_vbnWN6UNS_q5RDkKNVuWFrYYFFKqiR-gmkO8pj_oot81JIujlgyhUE-rIxa3IRckWoH8ST9HMYyCcAODNHlUiCvewb652K28O4TaKN9gIDkRZXQPWUNkPD0sZolHmBzzcdBmJu7WsjXdrHtNS6PtT4r_bMLcNElnVie8xtErXmzxOA0kzNCyJFc8twTCJ3gh3yV1R5SL2zFurvfOG0cGBmr1F0UBwqSOLLR98sWOeJH5qGnBAex2HuIJ6kVtwu2PaLteUJ4Dm_31QwqPsmoahjBdfqiSU0H_x88_raXKI4pYpD-R2FFvY5wb7yoW0zrWqbCvM_V33xyma-uqGc7o_4mX9I56khMs5K4Ec_47xv_aolAsFpxL9JEYSqhpkHwIcdhVGMIDmG7Nv7d0rtOAq1O09PjXiY-Xy7mql5ocJO2o3V7LzGygi6uzQ=w1161-h783-no)

I just read that the 'Beeb' is [35 years old](http://www.i-programmer.info/news/82-heritage/10324-bbc-micro-turns-35.html). The manufacturer. Acorn, went on to develop ARM processors that are in many phones and other devices now.

I don't think the home computer scene has been the same in more recent decades. Most people don't write any programs themselves. The 80s were a time of experimentation that laid the foundations of my career as a developer and I think a lot of other people in my industry had the same start. I later went on to have an Amiga, but didn't program that as much. I've been getting back into some personal coding lately using Python.

What was your first computer?

Schneider (Amstrad) CPC 464 - back then it was either that or C64, two entirely separate circles of people it seemed ! When I see others of that era or earlier, like that BBC one, I find myself thinking damn I've never sat at one of these. Was magic for us kids back then.

The story of ARM is one of those come from behind victories nobody saw coming. I remember hearing about ARM two decades back because I was a geek interested in what was running my favorite arcade games and PDAs and printers. You would see ARM pop up on spec sheets here and there.

Now it's the most numerous form of SOC on the planet. Even Intel is trying to figure out how to keep their market from dwindling to ever smaller proportions.

Loved the nostalgic article. I'm from the States so never used one of these Micros myself. I had an Atari 800 during that era and later went Amiga as you did.

I think it was mostly used in the UK. The US had some from Texas Instruments. Radio Shack and others back then. I recently went to our National Computer Museum where they have some Beebs for kids to play with. I sold mine years ago, but wish I'd kept it.

Commodore Vic20 on which we wrote programs in basic, but the school had computers too, so I also did some Comal80-programming. goto - gosub. I understand how programming works and have done some PHP -coding whenever I have needed a website (like the very clever Phill-site). I would like to do some more, but the lack of time and an obvious project has held me back. When I do I think that it will be in Python... maybe doing some scripting for <a href="http://www.blender.org/">Blender?</a>

It helps if you have a particular problem to solve. I did some Python recently to simplify how I get images onto Steemit, but it's very specific to my needs. It does save me some time and that's what computers are good at. I have a couple of other projects I would like to do soon.

Not sure I used an Apple II, but I knew people with the TRS80. A friend had a clone of it called a Video Genie. That had some cool games that were all black and white with low resolution. It just didn't matter back then as long as it was fun

My first computer was a TSR 80. Bought it used in the late 80's. You could program it in Basic and I wrote a couple real simple (basic) LOL programs with it to store phone numbers, and keep track of finances. I didn't use it a lot.

Then in the early 90's I was shopping with my now x-wife and stopped in an electronics store while she shopped and was looking at a Leading Edge with Windows 3.11 and ended up buying it.

Taken from a wiki:
In 1994, Leading Edge offered the Wintower 486 Multimedia PC, with 66 MHz processor, 8 meg ram, 340 meg hard drive, 2 floppies, CD ROM, modem, sound card and monitor for a "street price" of $2600. It came loaded with Windows 3.11, Windows For Workgroups.

I downloaded this image a long time ago. This isn't mine but it was the exact same P.C. Have no idea where the image came from.

It had a screaming 14.4 modem... The internet was so fun back then though. Then I upgraded to a 56.6 modem and I was the envy of all the neighborhood geeks. LOL. Good times.

Absolutely loving the linux now. I've been a full time user for several years and it would take a lot for me to ever switch to another OS. There's a ton of great opensource software available and so much you can do with python and bash scripting.
