Monday Drumday: Gettin' some lovin'

Some of you may have been following my journey in learning to play the drums. Today I attempt a song that I had tried bits of before. I found a Youtube channel with lots of 'drumless' songs and it includes this ZZ Top classic.

The video use a scrolling drum tab like the Guitar Hero games. I have never played any of those, so responding to that was part of the challenge. I also had to feel for where the beats fell in the song and I did lose my place at times. You will see me pause at times. I only played it through a few times, so my performance is that that great. If I was playing a game it would not be a hgh score for sure.

This was really just an exercise to see how I would perform and do not expect it to be all that entertaining. I just like to record my progress and maybe people will have suggestions.

You may notice something on the ends of my drum sticks. I had some comments from my other half about the noise. Even with headphones the sound of drumsticks on hard rubber pads is quite loud. I saw that you can buy rubber tips, but I improvised some with packing foam. It does deaden the sound a bit. At least I do not live in an appartment. If you have people downstairs then you need more extensive measures to deal with the noise. People build isolated platforms for their drumkits.

I also had issues with Youtube on the tablet leaving the pause button on screen. I found some tips saying that clearing the cache could fix that and it worked.

Nice job.  This seems like a pretty good song to practice on and work on your fundamentals.  It sounded great to me!  That is funny about the packing foam on your drumsticks. I am sure my parents can sympathize with your wife. I was always banging on my snare drum and my practice pad when I lived at home.

Electronic drums are not as quiet as you might think. Still a lot better than a real kit. 

Drumming along like this can be hard as the drums would normally drive the song rather than the other way around. I think it is still a good workout for listening and building endurance. The display thing was interesting and I may try more of their videos.

As I said, I've not played any of those games. Playing an actual instrument is more fun for me. This was a bit like a game and challenging. I'll keep on trying and maybe play with some other people eventually.

Great stuff man you can keep your timing well, even when you fell out of it you were able to get yourself back in which is the most important thing. Anytime I play the drums I thrash around thinking I'm great, but I haven't played along to any songs yet.

Audioslave - Like a stone, Michael Jackson - Billy jean and the eye of the tiger, each have drumless tracks on youtube and are 4/4 too, whether you've already played along with them I don't know, but there's a few more for the library if you haven't. Keep it up though! It's a good idea taking videos of yourself as you learn, to keep track of your improvements along the way.

I think this one was slightly quick for me, so I was struggling a bit to keep up. The Billy Jean beat is pretty much the standard one everyone learns and similar to this one. I have done various exercises, but trying to play through a whole song shows up my weaknesses. The game-style video is interesting as when reading standard tab it's easy to lose your place.

I will keep playing anyway. I have been saying I will do a course and I think that is a good way to go to get some structure to my learning. There are loads of video lessons out there, but you end up trying lots of things and not mastering any of them.

it's funny actually.  I tried playing drums of the non electric kind many years ago.  It is a very admirable talent for sure... not to mention how much drummers have to spend on gear.  

Is there a foot pedal for the kick drum?  I couldn't see your legs moving at all in the video.

This setup is much better than the footswitches that came with the drums. I know I could spend much more, but I am determined to work on my skills until I can justify buying anything else.

I only found those videos yesterday. If you search Youtube for 'drumless' then various things come up. The drum unit has lots of preset kits, but you can make your own too with lots of sounds to choose from. I think I need to try that. I was using a 'heavy rock' kit. This unit has some limitations compared to the more expensive ones such as not being able to change the relative volumes of the drums, but it's good for learning.
