I acquired another instrument for my collection this week. My dad had this [banjolele](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo_ukulele) lying around, but he is not sure where it came from originally. He passed it onto me as they are trying to clear out some of the stuff cluttering their apartment.

The best known exponent of this instrument is probably [George Formby](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Formby) who was a big star in the 1930's and 1940's. Some people may think he played a ukulele, but I think he used the banjo version more. It really is like a miniature banjo, but tuned like a ukulele. This one has banjo-style tuners which are not great at holding position. I had to re-thread the strings to get them to stay in tune better. There is no maker's mark to give a clue to where it is from or how old it is, but it does not have much sign of wear from use, but the metal parts are a little rusty.

I thought I would play a song to demonstrate the sound. It definitely has that banjo song and may be louder than a ukulele of similar size.

It is a fun little instrument to give me a different sound to play with.

Rock on!

well, this is the first time I am seeing someone play a banjolele and it really sounds nice... Does it follow the same principle as the guitar ?

It is the same tuning a a ukulele (G C E A) which is like the top four strings of a guitar from the fifth fret. You can use the same chord shapes, but they are shifted, so a guitar D shape is G on a uke. It can confuse me when I shift between the two instruments.

My parents used to have an old steel guitar and a mandolin that they got from who knows where. I think the steel guitar had a broken neck and wasn't worth fixing. I don't know what ever happened to the mandolin. This is an awesome little instrument that you acquired!

I am sure there are many instruments in attics and closets that people gave up on. I've not tried mandolin, but it looks even more fiddly than a uke and I know the tuning is different, so I would have to re-learn. I am up for the challenge.

I had never seen one of these before. Reminds me of a mandolin. Shared this on Facebook with my brother and his wife. They play dulcimers and other stringed instruments like this.

I would hope you could find one. Banjo ukes are rarer than other types. My dad has no idea where he got it from, but they do shop a lot in charity stores. Maybe he thought he would learn to play it. He has been learning classical guitar for the last few years.
