Views of Arlesey

After my [epic run](https://peakd.com/hive-176853/@steevc/xhst-activity-1591530747) yesterday I took a walk today. My legs are actually okay. I walked all the way the far end of #Arlesey to check out the Arlesey Remembers memorial garden. This was part of a project to commemorate those who fell in the first world war. Crosses were laid on most of the graves (some abroard) and a short film was made about it. This garden was created behind the new cemetery at the south end of the village. I had seen it on a run, but was not sure how to access it. There is a gate in the cemetery that is not locked. The garden is in the corner of a large field. I wonder if that is earmarked for extending the cemetery.

I think it is intended as a place to reflect. The plants will eventually make it more sheltered. The slate slab has excerpts from letters the soldiers wrote home.

There were clear silhouettes slotted into the benches. I am not sure why.

I have posted some pictures previously showing some pubs have lost letters from their signs. This seems a common problem. The social club has lost most of its letters.

The methodist church across the road just has a wonky T.

I walked back along the river and passed the horses again. The foals seem to lie down a lot. Still no sign of [kingfishers](https://peakd.com/photography/@steevc/quest-for-kingfishers).

Talking of wildlife, we have been providing food for the birds, but they spill a lot of it. The chickens benefit from this.

We had a visitor yesterday who was taking an interest in the chickens. This looks like a young fox. So far they have never got into the chicken run, but we will look out for any attempts to dig in.

I went for a big hike yesterday and spent today not doing too much at all although I did manage a walk around the lake. It was a nice way to stretch our muscled tight from 6 hours of hiking in the hills.

That fox...here, where the fox is an introduced species, it would be eradicated. You're in England I assume, which is where our foxes originated (brought here by the colonials for fox hunting),  and so I assume they are treated differently. Here, each fox will take around $3,000 per year in lambs. The chew out the soft rear section and leave the lamb to die a pretty horrible death. It is quite devastating to the wool and lamb-meat industry. Farmers will shoot them on sight. Llama's were introduced to protect herds but it is not sufficient. 

Anyway, I hope your sly fox decides to seek his dinner elsewhere and he may live a long and prosperous life.

Foxes get hunted here too. It would be devastating if they got in the chicken run, but they have not done us any harm so far. We have had several lots of cubs around here and we think they have a den in the wild garden next door. They seem to find enough to eat and there are no sheep near here. There ought to be room for people and wildlife.

Yes, there should be room for all...I think the issue here is that they devastate the  native population which is very fragile. As an introduced species they have the unenviable status of *feral* and there are no restrictions on their eradication. If the government could snap their fingers and have every single one gone they would do so. It's the same with rabbits, also a species introduced by the colonials causing massive damage to the ecosystem. 

I guess it would be the same in reverse if we let several thousand Eastern Brown snakes loose in the UK. Not only would the wildlife suffer, but so would the people. It is a deadly snake.

The ecosystem is so finely balanced and needs to be protected in some way I guess. Bilge water from far away ports pumped out of container ships is one reason the Great Barrier Reef is dying, and deforestation for palm oil plantations around the world is destroying the habitat for many animals. There's so many cases of this nature...I wonder where it will all end up.

I hope your foxes and chickens get along better than many humans do. The world seems to have gone quite mad.

Yep, that is definitely a fox.  Usually you aren't lucky enough to catch a shot of them.  They are pretty shy.  That does look like a very somber place to reflect!

We have seen them in the garden a few times lately and used to have one cross our deck every night. They may be more common than people think, but are not usually out in the day like this.

I haven't run for a while and I miss the discovery part of it. Just switching off and running, looking around and finding weird stuff... like a seat silhouettes or a church with a dodgy 'T'.

I notice a lot of stuff that I wouldn't see if I was driving around. I keep finding new paths to explore to get some variety. Lots of quirky buildings around here. You don't necessarily have to travel far to find something interesting.
