http://i.giphy.com/3oEduWXcahOZFCJTNK.gif # When the principal announced the death of my friend over the intercom, the whole class bursted into laughter. Never before have I felt so alienated, angry, and disgusted with the world. In 10th grade, two of my schoolmates passed away. Both were terrible tragedies, yet the differences between the social responses to them were night and day. http://i.giphy.com/Md4Dky57u4VB6.gif # Justin was a popular kid. He was a star on the soccer team and all the girls swooned over him. He had grown up in the city and was well liked by everyone. One day he was the epitome of health and fitness, the next day he was gone. This was a huge shock to the whole school community. Everyone posted about him on social media and organized remembrance events. Half the school knew about his death before the principal mentioned the tragic news in the morning announcement. # It turned out that he had a case of acute appendicitis. He had a stomachache and simply dismissed it as eating some bad food. By the time that he was properly diagnosed, it was too late. I didn't know Justin well, so while everyone else was weeping for him during homeroom, I did not shed a tear. However, I wished that I could have prevented his death in some way. You see, two years before this, I had watched surgeries at the hospital where my grandpa was a surgeon. I had seen appendicitis surgeries and my grandpa had explained to me how to perform them. Throughout that whole day, I visualized the surgery process in my head and how I could have saved him if I had gotten to him earlier. Of course, that's not realistic at all, since: 1. I wasn't actually qualified to perform surgeries 2. I didn't have the surgical tools 3. I wasn't Justin's close friend and had no idea that he had a stomachache until after he died 4. Justin probably never even knew of my existence. This was simply my way of coming to terms with the death of a schoolmate. A few months later, another schoolmate passed away, and that news struck in a way that I never experienced before. I had never experienced the death of a close family, so that was the highest impact tragedy I had ever experienced at the time. # I first met Ahmed at the beginning of the school year. http://i.giphy.com/Ce3E5y0gLMa9W.gif Many students lived far from school, so we would hangout outside of the school building as we waited for our parents to pick us up. There were a few of us who came from immigrant families. We all came from different countries, but we were able to share common experiences and get along. # Ahmed was lanky, pale, and mild mannered. Our activities ranged from playing Yu-Gi-Oh cards to doing pushups, from discussing school life to learning to solve the Rubik's Cube. Shocker, none of these activities helped us to fit in with the cool kids, but we didn't care. We enjoyed each others' companionship and that's all that mattered. As a result, very few people knew of Ahmed. The school day after spring break, as I waited for my dad to come pick me up, I asked our mutual friends, "Where is Ahmed? He's usually never absent." Nobody knew the answer, and none of us really gave it another thought. The next morning, the principal announced over the intercom that Ahmed's whole family passed away in a car crash while driving to their vacation spot over spring break. # Because Ahmed had a really long and foreign name, the principal completely butchered his name during the announcement. Everyone in my homeroom bursted into laughter except for me. http://i.giphy.com/1OocZjKBx7xKw.gif I was in shock. I cried harder than anyone ever did for Justin, and for the whole day. I usually expressed little emotion during homeroom and hadn't cried in years. # But this was unbearable. I've never felt such a huge sense of loss and such hatred for the ignorance of my classmates. These hypocrites all cried for Justin just a few months earlier! Now they are mocking my friend's name when his whole family died. I didn't simply weep for the death of a friend. I wept for the memories of all immigrants whose sufferings went unnoticed because they dared to risk everything in hopes for a better life in America. I knew that my family and Ahmed's family came over to America with nothing, worked overtime everyday, and saved as much as possible in hopes for a better future. We had to leave behind wealth, family, and friends in the homeland. Ahmed's family finally earned a vacation after working their asses off for years, and they had to die before they reaped the rewards for all their hard work. Only his immediate nuclear family came to America, as with my family. When they died, there was no funeral. # Nobody in America remembered them. http://i.giphy.com/swJXcFsgzpt6M.gif My soul was crushed. Here we were enduring all kinds of hardship to chase after the American Dream, and it was all lost in a moment. And worst of all, as soon as we die, they laugh at our names then forget us immediately. Our lives didn't matter. It dawned on me that if I died, I would not receive a funeral in America. I would also disappear completely after a brief mocking of my name. # I vowed to remember Ahmed forever, because nobody else would. http://i.giphy.com/6bjO1XYKY7NsI.gif These events did not happen in some backwoods white-dominated place. This was a city that was almost entirely populated by minorities. This was a city where everyone rioted in support of Black Lives Matter. This was a city that has one of the best-ranked hospitals in the world. This was a city where all the elected officials were Democrats who promised progressive policies. --- Years later, I wept for Ahmed again when I heard about the Elliot Rodger killings. While everyone else demonized Elliot as a misogynist, I sobbed my heart out for Ahmed, James Hong, David Wang, and George Chen. Elliot killed two sorority girls, a popular guy, and three Chinese immigrants [1]. Of course, once again, the lives for hardworking, meek immigrants didn't matter to the media. They spun the story to advance their agenda against the "evil white Patriarchy" and "evil guns". http://i.giphy.com/Q6xQBxGgpkpYA.gif No, there was no patriarchy. Elliot was a mixed kid who was confused about his own identity. He was ostracized and never fitted in. Nobody cared that he existed or loved him. He was extremely lonely and mentally ill. He knew that he would be forgotten and unnoticed unless he did something huge. # However, rather than striving to make a huge positive impact on the world, he chose to create a memorable tragedy as his exit from this world that has rejected him. James Hong, David Wang, and George Chen were all stabbed to death in their sleep. This story always escapes the media. We have a huge media problem of immortalizing the killers while silencing the victims who do not fit the political narrative. >They were expecting their son home for the summer next month, with an upcoming family vacation at Yellowstone National Park to look forward to [2]. This line makes me shed a tear every time I read it. Like Ahmed, David Wang never got to reap the rewards for all his hard work. David was an accomplished computer engineering student and basketball player who aced his SATs. I can just imagine him looking forward to that vacation and uniting with his family after a tough school year. # But no, all that was taken away from him and his family, and all he got was some assholes on the Internet making fun of his name. Today, I weep for Ahmed, James Hong, David Wang, and George Chen once again. Terrorists killed 70 people in Pakistan, yet I don't see anyone putting up Pakistani flagged filtered profile pictures nor do I see #prayforpakistan trending on any social media platform. Liberal hypocrisy much? Members of Project First Generation Immigrants have no name. Through his death, he had a name that was mocked. # His name is ... forgotten. People pretend to represent us to advance their own political agendas, but nobody really represents us. Our lives didn't matter. These are the things that make to you rethink the life, It is when we see that we lose the time with stupidity. Something similar happened to me in the work approximately 10 years ago, one of my companions of work did not return on Monday to work after the weekend, in the middle of the morning they reported to us that it had died for a cerebral spillage, he was 28 years old, sportsman ... and from one day to the next the life went away...

Unfortunately, this is not an unusual occurrence. Individual death's are recognized by those to whom it matters most, whether it be family, friends, acquaintances or others. A lack of caring, sorrow or concern by anyone else is what it is. You have remembered. That made his life memorable. You have made it so. People need friends like you.

I live in Bangkok and have seen so many Pakistanis in the city coming from refugee camps. They would stealthily roam the city to avoid getting caught by the police. Our church in Bangkok has been supporting at least 15 Pakistani families with their food, clothing, and some small change for their personal needs. They would choose the "free bus" rides that the Thai government provides for the city to come to church. Or walk for miles from their homes just to spend time in church. They have small children with them, even infants. We cannot provide work for them as it would be illegal. They have no legal documents and I wonder, how will they ever survive? Surprisingly, they do and I have never seen such resilient group of people. We continue to support them to the best and legal means that we can.

Secret Writer: What a sad story. I wish I had words to fix what happened. To change the way the news of this family's death was received by your classmates. Teenagers can really act inappropriately and disrespectfully sometimes. Part of that may just be a lack of life experiences to really get how your actions and words affect other people. I'm sorry for your friend and the emotions you had to work through in this process. Thank you for sharing your story.

This is so frustrating. I'll never understand how people can laugh at something like that. Years ago, a local kid was murdered along with his family and their house was burnt down as well, and the way people were discussing it was so flippant. It was really alienating to me that people didn't respect these lives just because they didn't know them.

I remember my brother when his best friend died due to hypertension while asleep. He said i wish i didnt this guy, i wish didnt know him so well. He said that due to the pain that he felt within, losing somebody who is dear to you is not easy, but everything happens for a reason.

I hope one day soon there will be no such thing as xenophobes. A place where nobody passes off the value of another human being because they have an unfamiliar name, or because they look a little different, or because you don't understand their culture. When in essence that is exactly what makes them beautiful. If people knew how much they can learn about others and themselves just by not being an asshole, they wouldn't be so close minded. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. To Ahmed & his Whanau (family) I've sent all my Aroha (love) to wherever you are now. And to whoever wrote this I send me aroha to you too <3

You know @stellabelle I can't possibly say I am sorry about this because I cannot fathom what another person goes through. I don't believe in empathy nor do I think it is really a thing [as I explain here](https://steemit.com/life/@knozaki2015/the-illusion-of-compassion-featuring-new-author-kyriacos). I do know that time heals wounds and that the more tradegy one is exposed the more robust they become. Sometimes one can brake. From your way of writing i think you are a tough girl. Keep it up.

All the secret writer stories are anonymous stories sent to @stellabelle. She's simply the editor. I'd have to disagree with you about the existence of empathy, but I do agree with becoming more antifragile with tragedy as long as you don't break. Edit: Read the article and I do agreed. People feel empathy, but it doesn't necessarily lead to real actions or positive results, as it is purely emotional and you need logic to make an utilitarian impact.

Secret Writer, Sorry to hear about this story and how you tragically lost a close friend. I can truly empathise with your feelings and what happened coming from an immigrant family myself. Sadly despite all the progress that has been made there is still blatant racism below the surface in most places. The example of your friend's name being laughed over during what should have been a solemn moment just highlights this. I have also seen how the media tends to spin stories in a way that caters to this latent prejudice. The example of the killings you give is typical. Another example I would give is that of any gun related incident which involves a white assailant will get labelled as a lone nut. A similar attack by any person of colour will likely be labelled a terrorist attack until proven otherwise (and even then if they have a Muslim sounding name they will labelled a terrorist no matter how tenuous the link). Just take the example of the Charleston shootings - had it been a black man shooting white people it would have been an act of terrorism. There would have been much greater political outrage and some kind of political action and new laws would have been demanded. Since only "non-whites" were killed it didn't really matter. To the mass media and politicians these lives are (I'm sad to say) less important. This kind of stuff hurts a lot if you are part of any minority community. I'm not sure that those who are not can fully understand it because they haven't grown up being seen as second best. It is the cultural norm and since it does not affect them they are largely blind to it. That is not deliberate or malicious though it is just the way things are. If you are part of a minority these events tend to break your reality and make race an issue even when it absolutely shouldn't be. It is a wake up call to say that your life and that of those like you is not valued by the majority in the same way that they value their own lives. No matter what you do you will always be worth less to them (at least on an unconscious level and there is psychological research which confirms this). Having said that I don't want to be too negative. Things have improved significantly since I was a child. I have vivid memories of people spitting on me and telling me to go back to my own country (when I just as English if not more so than they were). Some of my earliest memories are of this kind of behaviour and being too young to understand why it was happening. Not only was it confusing but the sheer hatred expressed was terrifying and actually made me very aggressive and overly violent at times when I was young - an overcompensatory defence mechanism. Thankfully this kind of overt racism is much rarer now. Anyway thanks for making your post and remembering your friends and those who have been rendered invisible by virtue of their heritage. At least you have given them a voice with your post.
