STEEMIT USER SURVEY RESULTS: Part 1

![surveypt15ef82.jpg](https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/09/04/surveypt15ef82.jpg)

## Thanks to everyone who took the time to take the Anonymous Steemit Survey called _How Do You Feel About Steemit?_

You can still take it if you want and it is [here.](https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B9YQLX3)

There were a total of 91 responses which is quite a large number. Many of the questions were open-ended so I had to split this Survey Results post into 3 parts.

**PART ONE**

# 1. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON STEEMIT?

![pic1surveyb5f80.jpg](https://www.steemimg.com/images/2016/09/04/pic1surveyb5f80.jpg)

# 2. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT STEEMIT SO FAR?

**{Showing 90 responses}**

I like it. But things are getting worse now. I mean the reward became less and it's more and more clear this system is quite centralized.

Interesting and confused. I was really just looking for a place to blog.

It's nice. Looks promising. Might be the steam engine of this century.

very good with quite a lot of doubt

so so

positive

I like the money aspect.

Great potential, but very sensitive to policy/rule changes. Upvote/Reward policies are obviously the key issue

It is a great platform to share your thoughts and interests on, but so far it seems that well-known and successful Internet Marketers have an advantage over all the other members who always wanted a place where they can share their life stories and interests and earn some money in the process. I am also wondering if it is really worth it to stay on Steemit, take time to try to post content that brings value to the community, only to be let down in a few months if Steemit maybe dies a slow death like so many other sites, e.g. Squidoo, Bubblews, did. That was time and money lost for me.

Depressing and frustrating. Was pleasant in the early days, since user engagement with posts (by common users) was higher.

It's okay.

It's quite difficult to find things that interest me but I do get sidetracked by things I think I won't be interested in and then I'm hooked!

love it!

Very excited. I feel Synereo launching in the next few weeks will introduce some healthy competition to the decentralized space and ensure Steemit keeps it's chops up!

Cautious- Lack of trust, integrity. I question the scruples of those on top, not all, but some are unsavory. Sure, you can always find a bad apple in the barrel, but its much more than 1 apple here.

Fun

Excited... but confused. Great idea that provides a forum for many people who would not have one. Tough to figure out the best way to get noticed.

I'm not enjoying it so far and plan to leave over the weekend. Trying to figure out how to close/delete an account and easiest way to deposit the few dollars earned.

amazing

I think it's a great idea. However, I'm not so enamored that I see it through rose colored glasses. It's breaking new ground, and has all the growing pains that come with it. It also seems to be adept at finding new ways to make mistakes. But the sooner you find your mistakes the sooner you can correct them.

At first, I enjoyed a lot of aspects on Steemit. The system seemed very democratic and fair to users, as well as self explanatory and easy to understand even for users that are new to block chains and crypto.

Very promising platform

Great.

I think Stellabelle sucks

I like it.

Met some nice people. Have had a little success with my writing. Was surprised to find that monetary success depends on getting whale votes.

Mixed feelings. I hate that so much voting power is concentrated in just a small percentage of people. I do like being able to make money from my articles though. I would prefer that people at the bottom had more voting power.

while their are obviously still issues that need to be addressed overall I love it. It has become my number one site (it used to be a craft site)

I think it is a great concept just don't know if it has been built up correctly. i almost think we should make a bit of money every time our articles/blogs are clicked on. These things take me forever to type up and it seems very defeating at times.

I think Steemit is wonderful but there is an scam-ish undercurrent to it as well.

Great potential. Lots needs fixing.

Unequal and unfair. Favorizes elitism and consolidates power in wealthy elite against poor

I love how different it is from other social media platforms and the community that surrounds it.

awesome idea

Disappointed but I keep reminding myself it's beta.

Could be better. Whoever is working officially for Steemit Marketing (if they hired people about this) should be fired.

Love

Initially excited but have been disappointed by the downvotes. Sad that the promise of censorship resistance is being ruined by bullies who downvote anti PC and copywrited content.

I like it

It is very interesting, but I´m struggling with the inequality. I have only written one article yet as I´m very busy, but I have been doing really a lot of commenting, adding very useful information in anacademic sense, providing links, etc. And a lot of curation, really trying to support people. But my vote has hardly any power, and my curation rewards are almost nonexistent. But I do it anyway,to support others.

I love it! I think it has the potential to radically improve the world and human wellbeing.

Great Platform that will get better over time.

Great. It gives me a chance to be rewarded for content immediately and that's new and exciting.

Great

I see a lot of things which seem pretty shady. My articles haven't received a lot of attention, but I didn't come here wanting to be an author, and I wish SteemIt Leaders realized they are really limiting participation of the end-user, by insisting people write essays, reminds me of a bad college.

bad

I feel very happy and doing hardwork for good contents and rewards.

Love it

I am a bit disappointed, especially with the distribution of power and rewards.

I like it a lot

Very positive

Frustrated. It is set to block my replys, up votes and posts assuming I am a bot. Why create a community stopping people from using it?

Great, I love the platform overall! My only concern is occasionally seeing inferior posts get upvoted solely based on a poster's reputation, while at the same time plenty of great content flounders. Similarly, some posts receive dozens of upvotes but still don't earn much profit. I'd like to see improvements in curation and fair payment somehow. That said, I'll have to check out the new "promote" feature.

Love it, but worried about its future.

Pretty good feeling about it.

It is great

Amazing. Still a lot to do to improve it. Paradigm shift.

I really love steemit as a platform and the ability to say what I want in any form of expression. My only "issue" is not being "found" and earning more for my quality posts - which begs the question: Why am I here? Yes, I love to write - but I also need to earn a living. Is the time dedicated to the platform worth it? Right now - no. But in time...I hope so. I'm an optimist most of the time.

Meh

I'm smitten. I have also heard valid complaints and questions. There've even been red flags of the sort a smitten person should always notice. There's a sense in which my work has been well received in that I've been featured in the Lost Content Digest and noticed by the robinhoodwhale. That success has not, however, translated into comments. Though they are well-researched and thoughtful, I doubt my posts are being much read. I once used the metaphor of surfing to explain the highs and lows that come with learning to connect on Steemit. It helped me navigate the feeling of sadness when my posts went unnoticed. You go out there into the water because you want to be under the sun and in the salt and its worth it even with the occasional underwater tumble. That said, I almost left. I didn't expect to make waves, but totally still waters can't be surfed. I'm back with full force because of Project Curie. The community is good. I hope it won't break my heart.

I feel it's getting better and better all the time.

Exciting platform. Confident of its future viability

It was a unique concept and stimulating at first, but it's flaws are starting to overshadow its usefulness. It just seems scammy and kind of shady. It's value is also falling towards zero.

Very positive. Cool people and a system with a lot of potential

Positive

It's alright, topics are extremely limited, quality is good for what is available. Video content should be promoted more.

Its exciting and a good reason to be productive

I must love it because it has become part of my routine reading.

I've been benefited and have found personal satisfaction in Steemit. I have done things in Steemit I could not and would not do otherwise.

Not sure

CLOWN

It sucks

The platform is awesome but needs some hardfork. The whales and bots need to behave.

I feel it is a good source of diverse information. I like to read a lot of articles there. The fact that there is money that can be made is big reason that I am there. Also the people are generally nice.

I was really happy with the July 4th payout. Kind of frustrated the dev team keeps changing the rules.

Hopeful for the future. Expecting great things as the platform evolves.

I love the potential of the site. However, things like plagiarism and abuse weigh heavily on the experience.

Like contributing but feel it has stagnated.there doesn't seem to be merest in making it fun for minnows.

I have not yet been able to know how everything works. Also, I'm Spanish so some times is really hard

Great concept. Looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

Good

Nice place, lot of different people who got structured over the time

It's a whales pit

Excited overall. Somewhat disappointed with payouts, but I still see good growth potential.

Meh

its going down hill.

I enjoy the content.

Awesome.

Good idea. Seems to be decent implementation. Slight concerns with sustainability and volatility

mixed.

# 3. DO YOU FEEL ENGAGED ON STEEMIT? WHY OR WHY NOT?

**{Showing 88 responses}**

Yeah. It's still giving me unique possibility to get money reward for my opinion.

Being new, no not really.

My interests are very... fragmented.

yes be part of this revolution is normal whatever the result its

at first i was but i lost motivation

yes, because I have a mission

Yes. People do comment on my blog and often will reply to other comments of mine.

Yes. I think the next 1-2 month will decide if it succeeds or not.

At the moment, not yet. That can be because I am not posting regularly. Rather I am spending a lot of time reading other members' post to find out what exactly Steemit is all about. I upvote and reply to posts that I really like in the hope that these contributors would also hop over to the few posts I made and at least acknowledge my efforts.

Invested time and money in it, so I still feel bound to it somewhat.

I feel like I'm going through the motions. I get comments on my posts that have nothing to do with my posts but are obviously just there to get me to click on someone else's profile.

Yes, a bit addicted

kinda.. wish i felt more connected with people

Yes. Met some great people on here including yourself. Engaged in some great conversations and comment debates too, as well as PMs in Steemit.chat

Engaged is my choice, regardless of Steemits problems. Yes, I make the effort to engage, therefor I am.

Yes because I want to pursue learning and earning rewards at the same time.

Yes. I have had many conversations through the comments on steemit. I also use chat very often.

No, but mostly because it appears that dominant posters are anarchists, or weirdos, or really bad writers. I have found a few bloggers whose work I enjoy reading but even so, I have a better feed on my Wordpress account.

yes

Sure. I'm making new friends, gaining followers and have made some decently lucrative posts. I'm not ready to retire, but it's been fun and encouraging. Maybe I can retire next month?

Less and less am I feeling engaged on Steemit. The system seems unfair to newer users, as too much power is given to too few people. As well as it is even more difficult to gain momentum. In theory, Steemit is fair, but in practice, it is very unbalanced. I have used Steemit much less frequently because of this disparity.

Yes, I am engaged. I am a developer and I enjoy talking to people in the chat.

Yep

Yes

Yes.

I'm still learning steemit. I like reading articles from those I follow. I like the writing. Not sure yet if I'll stay. I want to make money with my writing and feel that the rewards system here is rigged in favor of whales. Regular minnows like me have very little chance of success. Financially, I'm making more on Kindle than I am here.

Reasonably so. I do read some of the articles.

most of the time I do.

I was at first but as things have changed i am not on steemit as much. I mainly upvote and comment now because i don't feel its worth my time to write "quality content" with no rewards what so ever.

I feel more engaged there than any other social media outlet.

Yes, good content does seem to get noticed. Perhaps not financially, but I have a growing follower base and base line number of upvotes

I'm engaged a lot but not rewarded in fair way

Yes. I'm very active on both posting and comments as well as direct chats with some users.

yes, i don't spend so much time on any other resource till this one

More engaged on the chat. Steemit isn't 'social' and the sense of community is lacking.

definitely I don't care about trending posts. It's because i would lose curation rewards if I upvote them after 8 hours. It's because they are senseless and leave no space for discussion.

Made many friends

Yes, because while I feel the bullies seem to have a lot of power, I still think there is a chance it can overcome the negativity

I feel engaged, because I have causes that I´m supporting, and I want to support people who fight for these causes. And I´m growing a reputation and followers, slowly. I´m aware that I might leave this platform for Synereo though. I will however keep options open, and be on several platforms. My engagement will decrease if Synereo is more interesting though.

Yes, more engaged than ever before. I appreciate a marketplace of ideas where quality is tangibly rewarded.

Sure, I wish we had profile cards to make it easier to know who we are engaging with.

I feel engaged because I like reading unique content here. Both the author and curation rewards help to keep me engaged.

Yes, the feedback on my posts

Yes, at this point I am still engaged.

no because i have better things to do.

I wants to engage in steemit full time because steemit is a wonderful life changing community.

Yes

I am thinking of Steemit and the content almost constantly. But, at the same time, I keep asking myself if this is just a colossal waste of time.

Yes, I am addicted. I try to reed my favourites "followed users" ever day and try to discover new ones.

Some days a lot. Other days I feel like nothing resonates

Absolutely not. I wish I could like posts and reply, but I don't have enough bull shit "seem power"

Definitely. I only wish I had more time to participate in the community.

Yes, I've had posts upvoted, comments and questions answered.

Yes. Money creates engagement. Human nature I guess. I earn something like 200$ on my first post. I was quite puzzle and surprised. Didn't expected that. Funny to note that people complain to not earn thousands in a post though...

Yes , I think the money is a key factor to this

Yes. I am very active. I had to do a lot of work to engage.

There are a few people whom I've connected with and we are engaged. Sadly, it's a small pool of people and I often wonder who I might have to sleep with to get a whale's attention. Thank goodness this is anonymous because my husband would probably whack me. LOL

Nope, too fast, too much going on, not easy to actually earn money

Definitely. When I comment on the posts of so many incredible people, they sometimes respond. I like the way I will look at my own comment and think "I'm just saying 'great post' in all these words." Steemit is making me a better communicator and a more valuable member of any group. That engages me.

Somewhat. I find I spend more time reading and commenting than authoring. What drives my time on steemit is mostly curiosity.

Yes; lots of interesting posts and commentary

Yes. some of the articles are interesting. I don't particularly care for highly technical info or crypto news which is what a lot of the site is geared towards.

Yes. Getting good feedback from people

Yes mostly, but voting can appear worthless from an earnings perspective because it hardly earns me any money.

Idk I'd need a definition of engaged.

The instant feedback definitly makes it engaging to keep producing and improving

Not really. Most people vote and move on without any further interaction. I enjoy commenting and engaging with other in my feed.

Yes. I find it rewarding, not so much in earnings but in it experience and developed skill sets.

Sure. I post, i get comments.

No, noobs get no money

Nope. I am just engaged with less than 10 people.

I do feel engaged. I have participated in the comments of many posts.

Not as much anymore.

Yes. With regard to question #5, I feel my voice matters as much as it should in the "crowd" model.

I do. I think there are authentic people who strive to produce amazing content. It's upsetting when their content is ignored and buried under utter crap, stolen content, and people who are just there to make a quick buck.

It's addicting to feel like you are part of a startup and try to win curation rewards and out out a post with reads or dollar value.

I think yes because I get in several times in one day. Why? Because is new and could change everything. Or not

neutral

Yes

I like this project even still having the problems, but I hope all of they will be solved soon.

No, whales are not spreading the wealth the way they should.

Yes. I am connecting with people I can identify with and like.

Meh

Nope, see the same names on trending with nose drawings and short poems. while there is more better content than that crap, but whales have a trail so others follow.

I do. But it's the only social network/blog/wiki that I use.

Yes, because I socialize, comment, up vote, post and have fun.

Not so much. Most of my posts seem to get lost in the white noise. Those how see them seem to react overwhelmingly positive though

yes to a degree

Kind of agree that he system is stacked FOR the whales. Not sure how to get notice on solid content I post, finding niches that might be important is difficult. i.e diabetic advice, diets, anything related to pets in general doesn't seem to have much value. Just sayin'

@hanshotfirst ·
Excellent data. I am actually very encouraged by the number of positive responses or those that say they are upset... but believe there can be a fix. It seems that many times, only people with an axe to grind take the time to fill out a survey. This does not seem to be the case here. I have faith that many of the concerns will be addressed. The debs are constantly making tweaks to try and improve the experience. But what is most promising is that there are things the community can do to make improvements as well. That is very exciting. The community banding together for things like Project Curie and Robinhoodsteemwhale can truly improve the experience. Thank you so much for sharing this!

1: Did someone really say you suck? You don't, I think you are one of the most actually entertaining people on here. You do what you love and that is what I love about your posts.
2: I love steemit for it's community. The money is why I started, the people is why I stay. I haven't made much money on here, and that used to bother me, but getting to know some great people and their stories has been a great adventure. This is the real value of steemit to me.

"I think Stellabelle sucks"...LMAO. You rock for including that!
My #1 what do I think is that there should be some easy form to enter issues found with the Beta. Every Beta has issues that's why it's a Beta. Today it's a clash of creatives (bloggers/artists) and there is no specific easy way to log an issue. The creatives post emotional blogs to raise their issues and then it turns the platform into one big gossipy drama. One tiny input form for Beta issues would solve that. Almost any other Beta includes a specific way to log issues, why not here?
I did not do the survey but here are some comments on the comments here in Part 1 that are noteworthy:
-"system is quite centralized"-isn't that the opposite of the marketing and intention?
-"Whoever is working officially for Steemit Marketing (if they hired people about this)". Engineers should always hire the people they are not, including customer service and marketing. There could also be someone to sort through the intake of issues so the creatives don't have to, (or are encouraged to) blog about them.
-"but I'm struggling with the inequality." That's just sad.
-" reminds me of a bad college." This is even sadder.
"However, things like plagiarism and abuse weigh heavily on the experience." AGREED.
This survey is an excellent idea StellaBella!

@recursive · (edited)
> It helped me navigate the feeling of sadness when my posts went unnoticed.

That feeling is, I think, a very broadly shared feeling on the platform. The problem here is that posts have only 24h to gain attention and rewards. Success and failure are a 24h thing. The whole thing is designed to create an intense short term focus. With a change of focus toward longer term, people would not feel that sense of frustration as they would receive votes and rewards over time and would keep hope that their less popular content would someday receive attention when the time is right.

I myself quit making well researched and carefully written posts due to this short term focus, and the feeling it creates. I hate seeking attention, and there is no other way to get noticed than acting as a huge attention whore for 24h after posting, which includes spamming links in steemit.chat, spamming whales, spamming comments, upvoting oneself etc. which is just not at all my style.

This lead me to change my perspective on what Steem really is. I don't think Steem in its current form is really much of a social network or community forum now. Steem is more a sort of an ongoing reality TV casting for content writers where successful candidates get to become part of the jury. Exactly like in the show business, selected candidates aren't the most thoughtful or interesting ones, but the ones with the highest potential for drawing attention and promoting the platform.
