Welcome to the 16th episode of the stemng digest series where we bring to you some of the best posts under the #stemng tag in the past week.

For those that do not know yet, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.

In his post, @churchboy examined how it is that silicon, the most abundant element on Earth after Oxygen could is used to manufacture computer chips which drive our current civilisation. He then went on to discuss what happens to silicon from sand to chip and everything else in-between. Read this post to find out why chips are manufactured in just a handful of places even though the raw materials are everywhere.

The post by @funmiakinpelu is a topic of hot debate in Nigeria; the ban on the sale of codeine, a cough suppressant. The writer took it further to check on the practice of administering a controlled amount of hard drug in other to wean users from another hard drug. Do you think such method can work? If you are a lover of science fiction movie, The Matrix is a good one to check on. It is futuristic and has some scene where one of the characters downloaded the skill of a pilot and was able to fly a helicopter. But there have been real-life attempt to use similar techniques to boost memory which is the subject @eurogee wrote on. For details, please do check on his blog.

Well, it is great to end the week with a blog post that has loads of information on different discoveries in science. It is a list compiled by @pearlumie, and it contains information that explains why some Kenyan sex workers did not contract HIV even when they had unprotected sex, to the successful attempt by scientists to grow a tiny human brain on mice. More mind-blowing discoveries are on the blog.
