Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas #wednesdaywalk

Welcome to #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay 😎  I took a winter sanity trip from snowy Vermont to a sunny island key.  We stayed two nights in Dry Tortugas National Park.  Most of the key we stayed on was covered by Fort Jefferson.  Lets take a #wednesdaywalk around the fort.

Here's a view of Garden Key and Fort Jefferson.   There are seven keys in Dry Tortugas National Park.  Some are seasonal i.e. they are under water part of the year 😅

Gotta take the National Park sign pic when you visit a park.  We also get a sticker for the National Parks passport book to keep track of how many parks we have visited 😁

Fort Jefferson was built starting in 1846 and is surrounded by a moat.  A bridge leads into the fort over the moat.  Lets walk inside and look around.

You can climb to the top of the walls for a nice view of the fort.

The arched roof is the ammo depot.

The foundations of the officers quarters are visible along the west side of the parade grounds.

There is a light house in one corner of the fort.

Fort Jefferson is the largest all-masonry fort in US.

The walkways and archways extend the length of each side.  Making for some cool pictures and long walks 😁  Did I mention cool?  with the openings on all sides you can always find a breeze and a spot in the shade in the fort which was nice.

The moat still extends all the way around the fort.

And the highlight of the fort tour was sunset.

Sunsets were one of the best things about the trip.

The fort is open sunrise to sunset so we stayed inside the fort for some sunset photos.

I walked back up to the top of the fort's wall for this final photo.
