<div class="text-justify">I finally went back to the library after the Christmas break. I can't say I have entirely missed it, as it comes with its fair share of work. With the new year, a new set of acquisitions. Still, the peace and tranquillity is one I can't trade for anything. It is one of the reasons I haven't written a short story review for a while. I look forward to this as much as you guys do.</div><br>

<div class="text-justify">When I went over the short collections I had, my eyes immediately lit up when I saw <i>Guy De Maupassant</i> among other authors. He is a French writer with over 300 short stories to his name. He is considered the master of short stories. I think I have reviewed one of his short stories, I am particularly unsure. Anyways, the title of this short story gives an idea of what it would be about, so I decided to read this one.</div>

#### PLOT

<div class="text-justify">This deep and insightful story by Guy, tells the story of a woman who thinks she is pretty and charming and deserving of a better life, not the one she was born or eventually married off to. The woman has eyes for only the material things of the world. Jewelry riches and all, but her husband can't provide these for her. On one occasion her husband returns with an invitation to a function for them to attend, but she begins to cry, lamenting her predicament of not having a dress. Eventually, that gets sorted, but still, she wants jewelry. Her husband suggests she goes to borrow from a friend of hers. She borrows a necklace, but then after the event, the necklace gets lost and then all hell broke loose.</div>

#### SETTING

No place was stated in the story, but judging from the names and all, it possibly with be from france.

#### CHARACTERS

**Mathilde Loisel** is the protagonist of the play. She has the physical appearance but not the financial lifestyle she wants. Her desire to live this *fake life* eventually cost her and her husband their happiness in the long run. **Monsieur Loisel** is the husband of mathilde. A man of contrasting character to his wife. He lives a simple life. The calamity that befalls him and his wife is nothing of his own doing. **Madame Forestier** is Mathilde's wealthy friend. It is from her that Mathilde borrowed the necklace from.

#### PURPOSE

This story strongly sends the message and lesson of the chaotic consequence of greed and trying to live a fake life.

<div class="text-justify">This is a very beautiful story. It is perfect for all audience. Immediately I finished reading this book, I was silent for a few moments pondering the deep message of this work. How calamitious and devasting greed can be to ones life. WOW. Written in simple English, the author employs various themes and symbology to drive home is lesson and boy did he do it nicely. I totally recommend this to every reader and I would rate this a 4.9/5</div>

I remember this short story written by Guy de Maupassant. I read it many years ago and if I remember correctly Maupassant, as in most of his literary production, criticises the bourgeoisie and its excesses.

I have heard about  Guy De Maupassant and stumble upon his works. Though I believe, it wasn't something that left me a huge impression. I could probably give it a shot once more and see if he's going to change my opinion about him.
