When it comes to video games, I think most will agree that the most comfortable way to play the vast majority of games is with a gamepad, regardless of which, gamepads offer ergonomics and simplicity that a keyboard and mouse doesn't give you, personally I'm unable to play a shooter with gamepad, whenever I can use keyboard and mouse I do, mostly for accuracy issues than anything else, but in other games, fighting games, platformers, hack n' slash, RPGs, etc, the control is the preferred choice.

In consoles there are no major complications, you connect the gamepad and play, but in the case of PC users this can be more complicated due to compatibility issues, since not all gamepads work the same, leaving aside the quality, there are gamepads with different connection methods, not all are so easy to connect to the PC, others you connect them but then they don't work for almost any game, and a long etcetera causing many headaches.

Many of these problems are solved with an official Xbox controller, not only is it comfortable but also the vast majority of games are optimized to run smoothly with these controls, but not everyone has the option to purchase one of these, and something very common that happens at least here in Venezuela, is to resort to the typical generic PS3 controller of dubious quality worth $10, the one that everyone sells you as if it were original, or failing that, the generic PS4 controller, which is more expensive but usually hold longer.


This post will focus specifically on these two controllers, not only the generic ones, it also applies to the official ones as it often happens that games are not optimized to work with PlayStation controllers, and that is why we resort to third party software to facilitate this task, personally I have used SCP Toolkit all my life, but more recently I started to combine it with DS4Windows and my options have increased a lot, so I wanted to talk about my experience and recommend both programs, because neither is bad, both do the same thing but in different ways.

Probably the best known of the two, I always hear more about this or the X360CE, which has never worked for me and I find it cumbersome to run, as I said I started testing it very recently and I am satisfied with the results.

DS4Windows creates a kind of virtual gamepad, where it makes the game you try to run believe that you are using an Xbox gamepad instead of the PS3 or PS4 gamepad, it also works for PS5 according to the official page as well as some Nintendo Switch controllers, but these are not things that I can verify first hand, in this case I'll limit myself to PS3 and PS4 imitations.

You can use DS4Windows both wirelessly via bluetooth as well as via USB cable, depending on the controller you will need a newer bluetooth standard, but it's nothing to worry about honestly, it's enough to have bluetooth 2.1 to be able to connect PS3 and PS4 gamepads without problems, with newer controllers I couldn't confirm if 2.1 is enough, but as I said, if you don't have bluetooth you can still connect it via USB and it will fulfill the same function plus the added bonus of not having battery worries, however, for some reason I can't get my PS4 controller to work with the USB cable method, but it works flawlessly with bluetooth, which until before testing the program was what always gave me problems, because the pc always detected the controller as an input method and you could use it to move the mouse, among other things, which you can disable with DS4Windows as well as customize the color you want the LED to light up, if you want it to change when you have low battery, among more technical options that I think the average user will not use at any time.

In this sense DS4Windows seems to me more complicated to use because many times you do not know what affects what and it is a matter of touching options and see what happens, with this method I didn't take too long to leave my optimal settings to play wirelessly, the ideal is that it works well with both methods, but as I say, in my case it only works this way, now, let's move to the other side of the coin.

Probably one of the most useful programs I have used in recent years, and I would recommend it as the definitive choice if you don't have bluetooth connectivity and only want to play via USB, because here it happens the opposite of DS4Windows, I can play with USB without any problem, but Bluetooth I could never make it work properly, with either method, the approach is the same, it makes believe the games that you use an Xbox controller and takes advantage of that compatibility, but it does it in a more direct and simple way, you only have to use the installer, which will also warn you beforehand if you are missing any dependency that you should install before, and then it will take you to the driver installation screen, this is the most "complicated" part, you only have to check the box of the controller you want to use, in this case, we can only choose between DualShock 3 and 4, and install, that's all.

From here on you don't need to worry about additional configurations, the program will run in the background and as soon as you connect the controller via USB you will know it is running because it has a specific sound every time it detects the controller correctly, you can open almost any game compatible with Xbox controller and you'll have no problems, play and that's it, so far there has been no game that does not detect the controller this way, even old games like American McGee's Alice I played them like a charm, there may be some exception out there, but I haven't found it yet.

One detail I almost missed is that DS4Windows requires Windows 10 or higher, while SCP Toolkit works even on Windows Vista, so if you want to connect your controller to your pc and don't want to switch to Windows 10, you only have one option.

In short, I use DS4Windows to play via bluetooth, it doesn't work via USB, and SCP Toolkit to play via USB, it doesn't work via bluetooth, both programs are supposed to fulfill both functions but not finding a way to make one work 100%, I use both, this maybe also has to do with my DS4 not being an original controller, sometimes I try to link other controllers with the PC and it has not been possible because the way they work is different from the original ones and therefore can cause problems, even so, I have a DS3 and a DS4, and I've been able to play with both on the pc thanks to the SCP Toolkit, so I would recommend this over the DS4Windows, as I said, for convenience issues, if you have different experiences with these or other programs, I would love to know, thank you very much for reading, I hope it helps you something.

Cuando se trata de videojuegos, creo que la mayoría estará de acuerdo en que la forma más cómoda de jugar a la gran mayoría de juegos es con un control, indiferentemente de cual, los controles ofrecen una ergonomía y simplicidad que no te da un teclado y un mouse, personalmente soy incapaz de jugar a un shooter con control, siempre que puedo utilizar teclado y mouse lo hago, mayormente por temas de precisión que otra cosa, pero en el resto de juegos, de peleas, plataformas, hack n’ slash, RPGs, etc, el control es la opción predilecta.

En consolas no hay mayores complicaciones, conectas el control y juegas, pero en el caso de los usuarios de PC esto puede ser más complicado por temas de compatibilidad, ya que no todos los controles funcionan igual, dejando de lado la calidad, hay controles con métodos de conexión distintos, no todos son tan fáciles de conectar a la PC, otros los conectas pero luego no te sirven para casi ningún juego, y un largo etcétera causante de muchos dolores de cabeza.

Muchos de estos problemas se resuelven con un control oficial de Xbox, no solo es cómodo sino que además la gran mayoría de juegos vienen optimizados para funcionar sin problemas con estos controles, pero no todos tenemos la opción de adquirir uno de estos, y algo muy común que pasa al menos acá en Venezuela, es recurrir al típico control genérico de dudosa calidad de PS3 de 10$, ¿ese que te venden como si fuera original?, ese mero, o en su defecto, el control genérico de PS4, que es más costoso pero suele aguantar más tiempo.


Este post se enfocará específicamente en estos dos controles, no solo los genéricos, aplica también para los oficiales pues muchas veces pasa que los juegos no están optimizados para funcionar con controles de PlayStation, y es por eso que recurrimos a software de terceros para facilitar esta tarea, personalmente he utilizado SCP Toolkit toda la vida, pero más recientemente he empezado a combinarlo con DS4Windows y mis opciones han aumentado bastante, así que quería hablar de mi experiencia y recomendar ambos programas, pues ninguno es malo, ambos hacen lo mismo pero de formas distintas.

Probablemente el más conocido de los dos, siempre escucho hablar más de este o del X360CE, el cual nunca me ha funcionado y me parece engorroso de hacer andar, como dije empecé a probarlo hace muy poquito y me satisfacen los resultados.

DS4Windows crea una especie de mando virtual, donde hace creer al juego que intentes correr que estás utilizando un mando de Xbox en lugar del mando de PS3 o PS4, también funciona para PS5 según la página oficial así como algunos controles de Nintendo Switch, pero no son cosas que pueda verificar de primera mano, en este caso me limitaré a imitaciones de PS3 y PS4.

Puedes utilizar DS4Windows tanto de forma inalámbrica mediante bluetooth, así como por cable USB, según el control necesitarás un estándar de bluetooth más reciente, pero no es nada preocupante sinceramente, basta con tener bluetooth 2.1 para poder conectar mandos de PS3 y PS4 sin problemas, con mandos más recientes no podría confirmar si el 2.1 es suficiente, pero como dije, si no tienen bluetooth aún pueden conectarlo por USB y cumplirá la misma función además del añadido de no tener preocupaciones por la batería, sin embargo, por alguna razón yo no consigo hacer funcionar mi mando de PS4 con el método del cable USB, pero funciona de forma impecable con bluetooth, que hasta antes de probar el programa era lo que siempre me daba problemas, pues la pc siempre detectaba el control como un método de input y podías usarlo para mover el mouse, entre otras cosas, cosa que puedes desactivar con DS4Windows así como personalizar el color con el que deseas que se ilumine el led, si quieres que cambie cuando te queda poca batería, entre opciones más técnicas que creo que el usuario promedio no va a ocupar en ningún momento.

En este sentido DS4Windows me parece más complicado de utilizar porque muchas veces no sabes en qué afecta qué cosa y es cuestión de ir tocando opciones y ver que pasa, con este método no tardé demasiado en dejar mi control óptimo para jugar de forma inalámbrica, lo ideal es que funcione bien con ambos métodos, pero como les digo, en mi caso solo me funciona/ocupo de esta forma, ahora, pasemos a la otra cara de la moneda.

Probablemente, uno de los programas más útiles que he utilizado en los últimos años, y lo recomendaría como la opción definitiva si no tienes conectividad bluetooth y solo quieres jugar por USB, pues acá me pasa lo inverso a DS4Windows, puedo jugar con USB sin ningún tipo de problema, pero el Bluetooth nunca pude hacerlo funcionar correctamente, con cualquiera de los dos métodos, el acercamiento es el mismo, hace creer a los juegos que utilizas un control de Xbox y se aprovecha de esa compatibilidad, pero lo hace de forma más directa y simple, solo debes ocupar el instalador, que además te va a avisar previamente si te falta alguna dependencia que debas instalar antes, y luego te llevará a la pantalla de instalación de drivers, esta es la parte más “complicada”, solo debes marcar la casilla del control que quieras utilizar, en este caso, solo podemos escoger entre DualShock 3 y 4, e instalar, eso es todo.

De aquí en adelante no necesitas preocuparte por configuraciones adicionales, el programa correrá en segundo plano y apenas conectes el control por USB sabrás que está corriendo porque tiene un sonido específico cada vez que detecta correctamente el control, puedes abrir casi CASI cualquier juego compatible con mando de Xbox y no tendrás problemas, jugar y listo, hasta el momento no ha habido juego que no me detecte el control de esta forma, incluso juegos algo antiguos como American McGee’s Alice los  jugaba a las mil maravillas, alguna excepción habrá por ahí, pero aún no la he encontrado.

Un detalle que casi se me salta es que DS4Windows requiere Windows 10 o superior, mientras que SCP Toolkit funciona incluso en Windows Vista, así que si quieres conectar tu control a tu pc y no quieres pasar a Windows 10, solo tienes una opción.

En resumen, utilizo DS4Windows para jugar por bluetooth, no funciona por USB, y SCP Toolkit para jugar por USB, no funciona por bluetooth, se supone que ambos programas deben cumplir ambas funciones pero al no encontrar la forma de hacer funcionar uno al 100%, ocupo los dos, esto quizá también tenga que ver con que no se trata de un mando original, a veces intento vincular otros mandos con la PC y no ha sido posible porque la forma en la que funcionan es diferente a la de uno original y por ende puede causar problemas, aún así, yo tengo un DS3 y un DS4, y he podido jugar con ambos en la pc gracias al SCP Toolkit, por lo que recomendaría este por encima del DS4Windows, como dije, por temas de comodidad, si tienen experiencias diferentes con estos u otros programas, me encantaría saberlo, muchas gracias por leer, espero les sirva de algo.
