![IABTTE 01 COVER.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23v4RAcSCaGSPvk3EngJUgSaQ5VHb1g7oCzFL8dUG41PPn4c5u6VzD1TiDioogBUDcPPy.jpg)

## Your Humble Participation

FAQ is fundamentally an acronym that means Frequently Asked Questions. And with the plethora of human disciplines, endeavors, and interests scattered across the globe, each one deals with their respective set of common problems that are in dire need of public scrutiny.

![IABTTE 02.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/243qAkmcntzshVaDyZgVsDKGh9ZhVX9FSausU3V4UiGc23tVhanGWDBGt1USMpVWwCWtD.jpg)

The field of architecture and design is not an exemption. As this discipline is one of the most massive undertakings in the world, there are obviously several crucial questions that demand answers. The list is endless. For starters, let's talk about the foundations first, okay? Otherwise, we could easily get overwhelmed by their complexities.

So, in our never-ending quest of elevating architecture and design with the Hive blockchain, I'm thrilled to invite you, a subscriber/author of the [Architecture+Design](https://peakd.com/c/hive-178708/created) Community, and a distinguished brother or sister of our Hive family, to willingly engage and be involved in these FAQ publications and conversations about the said topics on the headlines. By harnessing the advantages of the decentralized web, our digital tribe has the collective power to spread awareness through our ideas, our words, and our holistic content. The Internet is in our hands. Let's do our share in making the world a better place by exercising our individual social responsibilities for the greater good. Mother Earth is our home.

Your voice matters.

## A Controversial Debate?

I could trigger compelling arguments with this post's core question: "Is architecture beneficial to the environment?" You see, the world consists of billions of people with varying beliefs, ideologies, and backgrounds. Some of us may be influenced by the herd mentality and the dominance of popular culture. But, we are all entitled to our own opinions, aren't we?

![IABTTE 03.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23wWuAcyBES9E8tCx627gGTQNm6LhXsJ7N2E7xoGMJUzZwEygeSwT19AXVBXU6635VmBW.jpg)

Having said that, I'm going to unfold to you my personal perspective. If you align with my thoughts, excellent. But, if you don't agree with my views, feel free to mention your position in the comments below. Treat this publication and its related posts in the future as a platform for wholesome discussions, an open forum to squeeze our logical, creative, and emotional juices. With all due respect, also consider this as a fun interaction. Are you in?

## When Architecture becomes Destructive

Visualize this familiar scenario. What does a life-threatening virus do to the human body? That's correct. It operates to destroy living cells and thrives on the decay of survival mechanisms of its host, mercilessly. As a result, the biological infrastructure of its victim stops functioning, leading to its ultimate demise. Sounds scary, right? However, that's already established scientific truth.

![IABTTE 04.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23zbRq9WdAjcdYKSHfbhmfW7yQHtegEh9QzA7f9Lo2J15g2k2qAxbhXjy4ocAJZgv3Ywa.jpg)

Now, what if the human body was Mother Earth, encompassing all her natural resources, organic components, plus ecological ecosystems? When architecture functions as a deadly virus, it likewise obliterates everything in its path. As soon as buildings, structures, and other man-made spaces mutate into harmful parasites, what would happen to our planet? Similar to a rotting corpse, our environment would simply kiss goodbye to all possibilities for growth. Period.

How could you help?

## Ideal Architecture for our Planet

Since our human ancestors began refurbishing natural caves into primary means of shelter and modes of abode, architecture and artificial spaces were officially unleashed. The modest birth of the built environment, as primitive as it was, plainly had a subtle, non-invasive relationship with its ecological surroundings. Global warming was not yet a known terminology during those early beginnings. The Earth was still like an innocent infant, not mindful of the looming catastrophe that was about to endanger its long-term existence.

![IABTTE 05.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23y8oLsTMd5kBuqrgEmMrZh4MA6YQ4nSryxhXfkytxvNdFhhibgChh36mXHhpfJzEjDQL.jpg)

Fast forward to today's modern era, what has occurred? Architecture, over the years, accumulated an enormous environmental footprint, making it one of the world's largest industries to pose a real threat to the planet. In a recent report by the United Nations, we are strictly warned that humanity has only less than a decade to minimize the deteriorating effects of global warming. In fact, architects, designers, and other professionals involved in building projects were also requested to reexamine their entire process. Are you one of these vital individuals? If so, you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders to fulfill.

Instead of being a detrimental parasite, architecture must develop a "Symbiosis" or a "Symbiotic Relationship" with the environment. Meaning to say, our buildings and constructed spaces have a common, close, and extended association with their environmental partner plus are mutually beneficial on the natural surroundings they are dependent on. As a result, sustainability is assured.

![IABTTE 06.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23zkk43VTLdkmz38jRdaWD7whu3VDNc9WcDKb7jBWfPjZXz8bcd91ws328zNNtT1iCRaQ.jpg)

How can you help to prolong these desired characteristics? Here are some actionable methods in architecture that you can fully implement for a much healthier world:

**TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BIOMIMICRY.** This category of science is a creative approach that derives design inspiration that mimics natural systems such as our ocean's coral reefs. Since this promotes the construction of efficient structures that only use sustainable materials equipped for their longevity, these processes assist in removing carbon from the atmosphere.

![IABTTE 07.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23r1jA2dJid7y6hrkcHDEtsyMgHMoHfWzmNZaErbCN6KvueMUkeCwZ3zqZZ13vJBYJ1H2.jpg)

**ALLOW FOR UPGRADES.** The practicality of retrofitting building components, utility systems, and architectural details is definitely a cost and time-saving feature. The procedure enables you to update as well as enhance the vital statistics of spaces including their energy and thermal conditions for the better. Modularity surely allows the ease of renovation.

![IABTTE 08.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23zknRPVZfci4TrNb6RS5wDNojxZaPz1nZDakfib8quukffUFuyTcNvfGiFR4cfrU5ZSQ.jpg)

**USE NON-INVASIVE TECHNIQUES.** The concept is for your buildings, structures, and spaces to prevent the exploitation of people and the planet's natural resources. Architects can help by limiting the damages done to the environment in a way that minimizes the deterioration of sustainable materials. Prevention is always better than a ton of cure.

![IABTTE 09.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/241tQm8zdLKMnArZMBtppwJZ1ynG7wdX8YEJQomiUFVQgyzFNRCFbjdKDbHPsPtFPZ7sn.jpg)

**CONSTRUCT WITH WOOD.** Timber has constantly been a reliable building material since time immemorial. And its reintroduction into the modern age of construction technology has transformed the natural resource into a sought-after component. The main asset of incorporating wood in your projects is its absorption of large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere.

![IABTTE 10.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/242NY9S25HEafJNkfzVjx3Gmaa7fjpTKdKZTaXFYRyVjzzzsqLFV9yN7RWdv8p8dnEYQG.jpg)

**INTEGRATE PASSIVE DESIGN.** This is an interesting architectural method that adjusts your building according to the beneficial orientations of nature in order to achieve favorable temperatures within the interiors. In a way, this concept ensures that the structure's envelopes consisting of the roofs, walls, windows, and floors manage energy well for long-term sustainability.

![IABTTE 11.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23qr9N9Yc8X39e2LF8DnZ4a9uMYy1MHSMy4LQUTuYpYZy7sqokeHEFDgYFUa9iXGhiYMz.jpg)

**APPLY REGENERATIVE ARCHITECTURE.** This is a smart route for designing spaces with a positive impact on their surroundings. Considered by some as better than sustainable buildings, this specialized niche of architecture targets the reverse-engineering of damages caused by the structure, thereby creating a medium for a more nature-friendly alternative.

![IABTTE 12.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23ycsQGd9GWBAfqCXF3kLtFL23VADymS1144UWCCwm4zSj8ZoeDfNRHMYkSpix3fSpiDL.jpg)

**PRACTICE LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT.** Also termed reversible architecture, this idea deals with the ability to build components to be disassembled as well as recycled at the end of their lifetimes. By utilizing the project's reusable parts, you save on additional expenses and unnecessary labor. People's trash becomes your treasures in the process.

![IABTTE 13.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/2423zDiNzV7JoWeNYXcBtBgjqLskN8HHznzVVTFaC3F7APh8yDWbD13R1Nxxyf81DWieC.jpg)

**RESTORE NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS.** Our planet's natural wealth has been decaying since man neglected its maintenance, development, and replenishment. Society is now contributing to the revival of these natural ecosystems by organizing groups to focus on the Earth's rejuvenation. It's helpful to the environment if you would participate in such endeavors.

![IABTTE 14.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/23rz7BGWvgpxfSotApMnBi9fTASjVbVApvtr45Jn9Rz5fSPqoRgxi7WMwVxtQ1eb7p5jQ.jpg)

**STRIVE FOR CARBON-NEGATIVE CONDITIONS.** The principle behind this concept lies in the built environment's ability to achieve zero/neutral (or below zero) emissions of carbon that are damaging to the atmosphere during its lifespan. By installing carbon-negative qualities in your building, you become assured of unpolluted surroundings during its entire existence.

![IABTTE 15.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/245mq1xzqk9QHM9bGsBgYHPQcrsDezD1vifrhj1RHegUPhoN9iZ2WGmHTP586fPrxuFCK.jpg)

**SUPPORT INITIATIVES ON CLIMATE PROGRESS.** Again, it's crucial for architects, designers, and other concerned citizens who truly care for their environment, to create awareness plus enforce programs to stop global warming and the further deterioration of our planet. There are dozens of movements specializing in this cause so, take that important step forward.

![IABTTE 16.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/storiesoferne/245HgsohmoKVCVWH617tReMuXaGcmjdJKwqLG3bcbrj7w4US67Tpkf6beoRSkgtj4iouC.jpg)

There you have it - an essential list of what you can do to boost our environment for countless generations to come. In fact, those courses of action are practically doable and have been proven to be effective. Start applying them today.

## Stewards of the Environment

In my opinion, architecture will become beneficial to the environment ONLY IF it follows the valuable measures that we've covered in this publication. I firmly stand to support my claim not because I'm a practicing architect but for the valid reason of accomplishing my social duty as a responsible citizen of Mother Earth. What about you?

As with other byproducts of our human imagination, architecture is certainly not a perfect discipline. And only time will tell whether or not we, as an evolutionary species, would harvest the fruits of our various solutions. Governments, private entities, and individual ventures have been continuously battling the odds to correct discrepancies before it's too late.

Therefore, while you still have the chance to improve the world's current state, do yourself a big favor by upholding your stewardship for the environment. You do not only enhance your surroundings but also, transform your life for the best in the long run.

There's no place like home.

#Hive, what's your honest judgment? I'm truly interested in your feedback. Let's talk about your ideas in the comments.

This makes me remember about the movie KINGSMAN where the antagonist likens humans to a virus (when he talks about global warming).

I totally agree with you that architecture will become beneficial only if it follows the valuable measures you mentioned. I believed you covered all the valuable measures that needs to be done in order for architecture to be benificial.

This is another excellent publication @storiesoferne I am glad to be one of your avid readers.

I agree. Many sectors of society today have ultimately blamed people for the untimely deterioration of our planet. So, unless human beings focus on developing helpful solutions and work to collectively improve the environment, there would be nothing left for present and future generations to enjoy. Yes? Just imagine if Mother Nature had a mouth and was able to talk, she would have immediately reprimanded human beings, and encouraged them to heal their surroundings. Or perhaps, it might even be useless to express herself orally since the visible signs of global decay like global warming, scarcity of natural resources, and unpredictable weather patterns are already evident to mankind. I hope it's not too late for us to regret it. Many thanks, @afterglow for joining in the conversation and offering your ideas. Cheers!

That's right if only Mother Nature had a mouth she would have immediately reprimanded human beings.

> I hope it's not too late for us to regret it

I hope too because if Mother Earth dies, humans die (we die).

@besamu ·
Dear Erne, I think that reading your educational articles are a source of architectural knowledge and, in a way, philosophical ones. The clarity of its exposition makes it a pleasure to learn about the world of architecture, whose products were called inhabitants of World Three within the ontology of the Viennese philosopher Karl Popper. In this post, in particular, you find yourself with a kind of taxonomy of Architecture that somehow reflects your theoretical interests in that discipline, as well as your predilections for some ways of exercising that magnificent art. This last sentence reopresents my interest in good architecture, that is, an art to be appreciated with aesthetic schemes, without leaving aside the love to keep our planet due to the depredation of its vital spaces, for a simple crematistic interest in raising great constructions chaotically. By reading you, it has been possible for me to better locate, firstly, what could be called Naive Architecture, made by our environmentally-friendly aborigines, by the Venezuelan architect Carlos Rául Vilaniena with his proposal for the "Synthesis of the Arts" and finally, not to to tire you, Fruto Vivas's vision of housing as a "tree of Life". From now on I will keep in mind your classification proposal as a guide when trying to evaluate an architectural work. Receive my congratulations.

Thanks friend Erne. Reading the Greeks, one finds phrases that marvel at their depth, this is the case of the philosopher Zeno of Citium (335 BC) who coined the following and that I share with you: "The goal of life is to live in accordance with nature." I hope you have a wonderful and profitable week

Interesting discussion. I really do feel architecture can play a pivotal role in rejuvenating and preserving Mother Earth. It is indeed beneficial to the environment as it is an industry that covers one of our basic needs but how we go about it is what matters. The ideas you have shared makes perfect sense and I am sure the industry players are implementing these strategies as we speak. ( You would know more than I would).

However, the use of wood in building homes seems to be contradictory as forest and woodlands have to be destroyed to create these houses (material and space) . I am sure a living tree gives more oxygen than logwood. But I guess it is more ecofriendly than concrete. In all situations there has to be balance I guess.

The most important take away for me is to be "stewards of the environment "as this is where it all starts. The good thing is nowadays, it is a cool thing😄.

You have a superb point there. My mistake - I forgot to mention in my post's section about wood that there are available wood alternatives (artificially engineered timber) in the market today that look, feel, and perform like their natural counterparts. And you're absolutely right, we obviously don't want to carelessly consume all our existing and newly grown living trees. Therefore, instead of exploiting our natural green friends found in forestlands, we must ideally use more wood substitutes for our built and ecological environment's sustainability. Besides, human beings (also being part and parcel of nature) simply need architecture or else nothing would address one of their most basic needs, which is shelter. Excellent conversation! Thank you so much for your time bro! Blessings always @dmilliz! 😊

@juancar347 ·
I believe that you are raising a very complicated debate here, where, among many aspects, one should also take into account the differences in thinking between East and West. The East, although it does not lack, in my opinion, the same problems of overpopulation that the West has, has nevertheless had an ancestral education, without a doubt very wise, in terms of architecture and the environment. In my country, for example, until relatively recent times, there has been talk of the 'brick boom', that is, building, constructing and building without looking at where or the damage that has been done to an environment, whose first effects they are the multiple destruction that accompanies each storm and is harvested, precisely, in those areas where there has been no respect when building. I think that more or less, the meaning of what I want to say, is guessed by what I will not make my comment more extensive. But I do want to ask a debate question as well: at the rate that Humanity is going ... respectful architecture or architecture to survive? a cordial greeting

That's true @juancar347. Western versus Eastern philosophies have different upbringings, thus their views on architecture's impact on the environment would consist of varying degrees, depending on their cultural exposures. Factors such as availability of geographically specific materials, climatic conditions, political power, educational backgrounds, and the like have immense influences on their perceptions of constructed habitats. In a way, it's quite mind-boggling and difficult to manage, especially if you're not familiar with the ins and outs of this industry. That's why this prevailing global issue will always be a suitable candidate for popular debates.

Moreover, you have a great point there when you said that we should not only be concerned with architecture's environmental footprint on the planet but also, the dramatic changes that people have contributed to their built world. Sometimes, we might be tempted to think that human beings, after all, are the main culprits for the majority of problematic outcomes we see in our world today. Thank you for expressing your remarkable thoughts. Have a relaxing weekend.

> Is architecture beneficial to the environment?

There is no single correct answer for the question. It is both yes and no. We can say architecture is beneficial when it enhances our living experience while addressing the need of sustainability. Concept like biomimetics and biophilia thrive with in the prism of a yes answer. But I think it is not limited to that. We can say it isn't beneficial when we don't account environment in the design. When we only design for the sake of design, it definitely not beneficial. Above all, the question is answerable base on the subjective cases we relate to it.

Hello @juecoree. I'm impressed by your personal perspective - realistic, truthful, and straightforward. In any global issue, there's always an arguable balance of right and wrong opinions. And these varying biases are what make life the way it is, basic but seldom complicated. Since the planetary environment that currently surrounds us today is our only home, for now, we might as well ensure that it's up and running to sustain humanity and its ecological ecosystems. Otherwise, could we even survive tomorrow?

We always have two options in our lives, whether yes and no, or left and right. Even though we need to find balance between the duality of our course of actions towards our environment and other global issues, we always need to choose one out of the two option that we have. Whether what course of action that we take, we always end up with duality of result (bad and good). But, what is important, we need to be ready to address what will go wrong from our actions. We need to overturn bad effects and sustain the good results.

> could we even survive tomorrow?

It is another yes and no. If we continue our wrongful approach to our environment, we will see in a few years drastic climate changes that humanity can't overcome. But our humanity can survive if we do our environment some favors today. We should look for ways to be sustainable and better regenerative society.

Hello friend Erne @storiesoferne I greet you from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Receive a strong virtual hug full of blessings, positive energy and lots of light. I congratulate you on your publication, excellent as always and as you already have us used to it. I took the courage to share it from my Twitter account and recommended it to some friends who are better prepared than me for this debate. I am simply amazed at your approach, God willing that the new architecture is taken very seriously for life and for life, remembering that the only planet we have, for now, to live is this, so the effort to save it It commits us all; from the most humble human being to the most exalted of mortals, the earth belongs to everyone. I know some experiences that are being carried out with great success in various parts of the world in relation to recycling, alternative energy, reuse of materials, energy saving ... the same industry shows some improvement in terms of defense of resources and the environment , many humble people, families have become environmentally conscious and are reducing pollution ... in short, everything that is done based on the environment is wonderful, here I have read several posts that deal with this issue. The truth is that I do not feel prepared to enter this debate, I only think as a humble mortal who constantly seeks his redemption hehehehehe. Thank you for publishing this and all the content you publish and will continue to publish. Thank you for your friendship, Thank you for your wonderful leadership within the community. Greetings and blessings.

Saludos y bendiciones.

Hello friend Marcos. Thank you for expressing your honest opinion and for sharing this crucial argument on Twitter. You're right. Architecture is a complex industry, and depending on where it's being addressed, there will constantly be different viewpoints from people worldwide. However, as long as we continue to do our part in protecting, conserving, and improving our planet, the risks of further destruction would be a thing of the past. And that's what truly matters, isn't it? Grateful for your participation, and it's truly a delight as well to read your comprehensive remarks. The best for you and your family. More blessings @marcosmilano71!

Hi @storiesoferne That was such an interesting perspective and research. I was bound to read all of the content with the pictures so relatable and beautiful.
I have been faced by such questions on architecture being the nature's destructor but these are the perfect comebacks for such situations as they are best for architecture and nature.
We can bring such positive solutions to make architecture beneficial for nature by following solutions mentioned in your post.
Thanks for such valuable post. Keep flourishing and stay awesome as always.

Hello @praditya. Indeed, our professional backgrounds in architecture are crucial in the continuation of our planet's long-term survival. What can we gain if we continue to carelessly exploit Mother Nature? Perhaps temporary material abundance, monetary wealth, or other temptations to feed man's greed? That may be true initially but, that's absolutely not a helpful model to follow. May we all contribute to the growth, prosperity, and sustainability of our beautiful home. Thank you very much for your valuable ideas, and keep up the positive vibes! Have a safe and enjoyable week!

Hello dear @storiesoferne This is such an important subject which needs to be addressed. I believe all your points are totally valid but as far as implications of these points are considered, people are very materialistic and bound to budget they do not consider involving such elements much. As there is negative in world so is positive and such people who are considerate towards mother nature are present as well.
I believe such practices are not just bound to be performed by the architects and related professionals but by common citizens as well and blogs like yours are such a great initiative to spread a word about such intricate subject.
That was much needed and insightful content.
Have a wonderful week ahead .

Hello, my dear Sahiba, you're absolutely right. It's often difficult to enforce valuable measures to improve our environment if people insist on being self-centered - by not caring for their one and only livable habitat. In fact, materialism is also helpful to our existing lifestyles because it enhances our standards of living. Yet, the only detriment is its common abuse by financially capable individuals, and its destruction to the human ego, thus resulting in a status (comparison sickness) game. Oh well, what can we do? That's the harsh reality anyway, right?

Also, you definitely have an excellent point there. It's not only architects, designers, and building professionals who should be responsible for our built surroundings, but, humankind as a whole. Only then can we truly create a home that's beneficial for as long as we intend. Take care, and have a lovely week @sahiba-rana.
