Beasts of Burden | MonoMad

Also called service or working animals, these wonderful creatures have been known to serve mankind since time immemorial. These special breeds of living species are typically domesticated animals trained to execute specific tasks that are beneficial to the human owners who keep them. Some of the much lighter chores these animals perform include guiding blind people, assisting law enforcement, herding cattle or sheep, hunting or gathering, and securing households or premises. On the other hand, there are also the larger categories of animals that are equipped to carry heavy loads, transport personnel and cargo, as well as do manual labor that people couldn't physically handle. Hence, we coined the phrase "beasts of burden".

For this edition, I'm featuring our modern-day beasts of burden in their black and white photographic splendor. This is my entry for the #monomad challenge by @monochromes.

Interesting topic but it´s hard for me to find anything positive here because "beasts of burden"  (I don´t actually even like the name, why should anyone´s lifetime destiny be bearing burdens?) are very often abused. These animals are often mistreated, malnourished and overloaded. In fact, some animals that are also used in this "industry" (for example elephants) were never meant to carry anything and even though they are big, carrying burdens damage their bones and is very painful for them. And I am not even talking about the extremely brutal "training" they have to go through to be able to carry the burdens. So no, I dont like this at all...

Thank you for your personal opinion! I share in the deep sympathy you feel for these pitiful animals. And you’re right, as much as they fully work for us, they are sometimes abused and treated without care by people just for monetary gain and other selfish motives. Well, I’m afraid that’s the painful reality nowadays. And I apologize if my post has made you react that way. On a positive note, this is my small way of giving these wonderful creatures the justice they deserve by highlighting the many services they’ve rendered for us for a long time.

It´s ok man, I can feel you are not one of those who would support any business that involves animal abuse. I just leave comments like this under posts that deal with these topics (beasts of burden, animals in tourism industry etc.) because many people actually don´t even realize there is this dark side of it too. And I want them to know...
