I'm a little late to the party as Evoland came out in 2013, but it is a very cool concept that I wanted to share. This game was made for a contest, similar to the origin of Titan Souls, with the theme of Evolution. You start out in a 2D, 8-bit, top-down game which slowly adds mechanics and updates the graphics as you advance. A sequel came out a couple of years ago and I just picked it up on the Steam sale. I highly recommend checking out the original.
