Ah, discounts. Who doesn't want it, right? The client smiles triumphantly while the artist cries in the corner because he have just undersold himself again. 

If you are reading this, welcome to another Straykat's rant corner, where she hiss and expose her sharp nails from her small fluffy paws which surprises everyone that she has dangerous nails buried in her fluffy paws. Haha. Enough with the exaggeration! I think this is enough to add length to my post and I can't really think of a proper introduction.

So the other day, at the height of my hangover from the online live concert of my favorite band, someone sent me a message asking me if I could make designs for a shirt. He sent me a few photo samples of the style and design he want and I instantly declined because I don't think I can draw in that certain art style. I showed him my drawings and made it clear that I can only do cute drawings. Later on, he messaged me that he would wanted to continue with my cute art style. He said my drawings are nice and colorful. He's probably seen my entries for the Clip Studio Paint contest. Lol. 

He wanted me to do four designs and after a few discussion about the design, he asked how much it would cost. I then told him that I will have to search and think about it since this will be my first time someone would commission me for a shirt design. And I think there is also a difference when charging fees on prints for personal or commercial use. Also, I am not an art professional and so I have to check if the fee on my mind is too much or too low. I promised him though that I will be giving him a reasonable price.

The next day or last night, I messaged him the price. It's a very reasonable price but it looks like he was taken aback by it. He then said he was low on budget. Uhm.. but I don't think that's my problem? A 500 Php *(Approximately 10 USD)* for a full color half body character with background is already cheap, even when a non art-professional does it, I believe. I was even thinking of charging more than that but since he is a friend of a close friend, I lowered the price even more, but then it was still expensive despite lowering it. :( As much as I wanted to lower the price, it will be total slavery and betrayal to the art community. 😂 The reason why art commissions are perceived as cheap by people is due to artists who offer their services for a very low price just to get clients. 

There are a lot of factors to consider when pricing your art. Experience, expertise/style, time and location are just some. Some even rely on commissions as their main source of living, so next time you haggle, even with your friends, think about it. ❤️ *(Adding a heart emoji because some people need it. Lol.)* Drawings are pleasing and entertaining to see but it's sad that people don't see the effort and struggles it took for the artist to create it. 

Long story short, the deal didn't push through. He said there are lots of cheaper services on a certain website and I told him to try it. I'm fine with it. I even picked some designs I like on the website and recommended it to him. It even go on with me recommending drawing apps. Hahaha! I have a strong feeling he would use the designs for his shirt printing business since he has one, but he did not answer when I asked if it's for personal or commercial use. Well, it's an advantage and a big saving on budget to be your own designer if you have this kind business.

Talking to people trying to make commissions can be entertaining sometimes. :D
