These days there sure seems to be a lot of people who don't even use 10% of their brains! lol I remember as a kid I believed that though. I used to think if we could somehow use 100% we'd become Godlike.

This is great @suesa. Our brain is the most complicated organ in our body system. Very important part am not surprised it consumes that much energy. Thanks for sharing and killing the 10% myth.

Yes! Thank-you! I knew it was a myth (a quick Google search gives a lot of evidence that we use our full capacity) but I did not know about where the misinterpretation came in nor about the glial cells. That part is fascinating!

And yes, I'd watch that, too, especially if it's plausible.

Evolution eliminates everything that is not needed. It would make no sense why brains kept growing if we don't use them.

It certainly bothers a lot of neuroscientists. There are so many widely held misunderstandings about the brain that scientists find it extremely unhelpful to have more nonsense spread to millions of movie goers. Other people I've spoken to are more optimistic and think that audiences will realize that the claims are not meant to be taken seriously. I have to admit, I enjoyed Limitless despite the daft premise.

I haven't yet seen Lucy, but it promotes the myth.

Reminds me of those two hollywood films: Lucy and Limitless where the story explores the possibility of humans using more of their brains and what we would then be capable of doing. Really curious to know what the actual scientific research is around this area. I wonder if we would really have all those special abilities if we could use more of our brain's capacity..... interesting.....

Why would evolution make it so we only use 10% of an organ and still have the 90% with us? We would've just gotten rid of the extra 90% that we don't need and we would walk around with a wallnut   in our heads!

I have always wondered how true could this 10%  latent mental ability  be.

For many people, the 10 percent myth sounds both feasible and appealing because they see it in terms of human potential. Many of us believe that we could achieve so much more - learning languages, musical instruments, sporting skills - if only we applied ourselves. It's easy to see how this morphs into the shorthand idea that we use just 10 percent of our brain's capacity or potential.

I have an idea that this is false since I tend to use 100% of mine :)

Myth is a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.

We have to analyze things and balance everything before we believe, lets use our common sense in believing things. Myth are like superstitious belief that has no proof.

We only use a small amount of our brains because most people don't need the rest. We have unlimited potential and can do so much more than most people 'attempt to' in their lifetime.

Stretch a little and you'll find that you can achieve multiple successes in multiple fields once we get out of the; 'This is what I do' mentality.

What we do is; create for the good of all. You can only succeed at this if you are willing to move forward from a place it may have taken you a long time to arrive at.

Good work! Just for some clarifications I wanted to add a few comments regarding this discussion.

1- I indeed agree, the "We humans are only using 10% of our brain" is definitely a sort of myth but one thing  for sure is that we are not using our total brain power.

2-  "We humans are only using 10% of our brain" I find it pretty vague because what do they really mean by that? Brain memory storage? Brain computation capacity? Those are two clearly different things and they need to be distinguished, because they require different neural network arrangements in our brain.

3- I think that the whole argument of this relates to learning and "intelligence" (I put it in quotation marks because no one seems to fully agree on what intelligence really is). It has been proven that for the brain to remain healthy (especially at an older age), new neuronal connections need to be made, in other words, you need to learn something new all the time which is outside of your comfort zone. Making new neuronal connections also makes you more "intelligent" since you can more easily adapt to newer tasks.

4- Also keep in mid that the way our brain use the energy (glucose) from our body is not something linear (e.g if I am becoming more intelligent or I am using more than 10% of my brain power, therefore my brain is using more than 20% from my body energy ). I think it is a much more complex process. For instance, for a human to learn new things at least 4 things are required: 1-attention, 2-time, 3-passion, 4-trial and error with immediate feedback. That will require a lot of brain power since our brain is trying to make a new neuronal connection for that. This is the conscious learning, and it requires efforts from the brain especially if what is being  learned is more abstract. Once a new neuronal network will be fully made, the same task won't require as much brain power and will be classified as unconscious learning. It is important to distinguish between the two.

5- Our brains are capable of much more things than we can imagine. There is a phenomenon called "the syndrome of the scientist".  Very few people on earth have underwent this. To sum it up it has happened for people that have had very bad brain trauma (stroke,  aneurism ...). They woke up one day and were able to do something  complex that they have never done before such as playing piano or speaking multiple languages. No scientist has been able to explain the cause of that yet.

"We only use about 10% of our brains," is technically true, just that the 10% in one moment may not be the same 10% we were using in a previous moment.

I loved the post (as I quite often get into arguments with friends about this topic) but there is one thing I would like to add (or ask) in relation to this part here:

Are you including certain mental illnesses as brain injury as, from my knowledge, some mental illnesses can actually suppress normal brain function. I might be wrong on this too which is why I am trying to bring this up as a curiosity. 

Doing a quick search (with google scholarly articles) did provide some papers that contained both decreased brain function and depression (as one of my search parameters) but I didn't get around to reading the entire articles to back up my claims above and, well, I don't want to back up my claims with something that either denies it (in which case it wold have been good to read to learn the truth) or something extremely faulty.
