How not to direct - Thoughts on "The Expanse"
I just watched episode 1 of season 2 of the sci-fi series "The Expanse". There seems to be a growing following for this series and it has received a lot of unjustified praise which I just can't get my head around. I'll simply try to point out some obvious flaws or what I find distracting in Ep01 of Season 2, because as it seems the show hasn't improved over season 1.

This show constantly feels the need to show us the lives and thoughts of secondary characters. I get it. Obviously in the books every character has it's backstory and is handled very thoroughly, but books don't work on the screen. A good TV series and movies keep their focus on what's important. In this series it's Miller and Holden with his crew. (the main characters) Secondary characters should get introduced if they are about to run into the main characters, not shown for a whole season. It almost feels like watching two series in one, but you know, one of those is super boring and ultimately meaningless (what's going on earth). Directors should learn that the viewers don't need to be lectured or held their hand all the time. We don't need to know everything that's going on in the world, because that's not how things work in real life nor does it work on screen. If they want to show us what's going on earth and what the martians are up to they have to somehow tie that in to the main story a lot more or only let the viewers have a climpse of other characters and plotlines through the eyes of the protagonists. Where's the fun in watching an action packed sci-fi story which suddenly cuts to some politicians reminiscing about their lives and then talk politics? Not me, that's for sure.

For a show that's praised for realism and originality it sure feels like it's lacking a lot of common sense and uses lot's of cliches. For example after bombing the bomber got quickly identified and it was a gang thug with a big tattoo on his face. Are you kidding me? So basically it's perfectly plausible that a gang member with a big tattoo can plant a bomb on a world leader's car. Yeah, sure, whatever. Simply saying it was a deep undercover sleeper cell in our own ranks would have made a lot more sense, but no... a gang member.
Then we have the mars scene. It has got to be the worst war tactic ever. Run out of cover in the line of fire, keep going until all guns shoot at you and then shoot some AI controlled torpedoes out the back of your suit. Yay, success. I kid you not, that's the level of intelligent writing I saw. Afterwards it turns out this character is very young and has no muscles. (OK, it's mars with 0.1G so they get a pass) But she's also very hot headed and want's to start a nuclear war with earth simply because... she's also rude to her superior and doesn't get called out for it in the military. Damn... If they would have my countries military discipline she would be brushing toilets by now. And why should high ranking military officials like generals talk to some squad leaders (soldiers) about things they don't understand anyways? Taking advice from young soldiers about starting a nuclear seems reasonable, ...not.

I could go on but...
...I'm tired :D

The Expanse is a sci-fi series with a lot of problems. I suspect a poorly written screenplay which makes it feel more like I'm reading a book than watching a TV series is the main problem. As sad as it may seem to fans of the books, I think when writing a screenplay, less is always better and the story should be told mainly through action not words. Finding a good balance is difficult, but certainly possible. And ironically this "president/master politician" character who is the most boring part of this show said in this episode "don't judge others by what they say, but what they do". So please "The Expanse" less talk, more action.

<center>What do you think? Any thoughts on "The Expanse"? Or am I full of BS?
