Zerodha is giving free money to open source projects. Yes, you heard that right. The Indian brokerage company Zerodha is giving upto 325,000 INR to 9 open source projects. And guess what? You don't even need to create any fancy pitch deck or go on coffee meetings to receive the money.
#### But how?
Well, it's because it's part of Zerodha's new initiative called FlossFund which was announced late 2024, where they've promised to give One million USD every year to support free and open source software.
#### So what do you Need?
All you need to do is add a funding.json file to your repository telling them what you need the money for, like paying people or running the servers. Submit the URL at floss.fund and that's it. It's kind of like telling the internet what your project needs and FlossFund listens and if they agree with your vision they send help.
#### But Why is Zerodha giving away free money?
Well, it's because they want to give back to the community and help them become what they are today. It's not coming out of nowhere. It's coming from a place of gratitude. Since Zerodha runs on open source software, like Python for backend logic and Linux servers to run everything, they want to make sure they help the people who keep that ecosystem alive.
Now, some will call it charity and others infrastructure maintenance. But one thing is clear, the internet runs on code written by invisible, unpaid developers. And Zerodha is the first big name to say thank you, not just with words, but with actual money.
