একাকী এক বৃদ্ধ  ভগবানের নাম করতে করতে ট্রেনে ভ্রমন করছিলেন । 
তিনি ট্রেনের যে কামরায় উঠেছিলেন সেটি বেশ খালি ছিল । 
যাত্রাপথের এক স্টেশন থেকে আট দশটি যুবক সেই কামরায় উঠে হৈ হল্লা জুড়ে দিল ।
 তাদের একজন বলল - চলো ট্রেনের শিকল টানা যাক ।

আর একজন বলল -  এখানে লেখা আছে অযথা শিকল টানলে পাঁচশো টাকা জরিমানা আর ছয় মাসের কারাদন্ড হবে । 
তৃতীয় আর একজন বলল - আমরা সকলে ভাগাভাগি করে পাঁচশো টাকার জরিমানা দিয়ে দেব ।
 সবার কাছ থেকে চাঁদা তুলে পাঁচশো টাকার পরিবর্তে বারোশো  সংগ্রহ হয়ে গেল ,
এবং সমস্ত টাকা প্রথম যুবকের পকেটে রেখে দেওয়া হল । তৃতীয় যুবক বলল -  চলো  শিকল টানি। 
কেউ জিজ্ঞাসা করলে বলে দেব ওই বুড়োটাই শিকল টেনেছে । তাহলে আমাদের আর জরিমানার টাকা দিতে হবে না । 
বৃদ্ধ সেই কথা শুনতে পেয়ে তাদের দিকে চেয়ে হাত জোড় করে বলল -  তোমরা আমার ছেলের মত ।
 আমি তো তোমাদের কোন ক্ষতি করিনি । তবে তোমরা আমাকে ফাঁসাতে চাইছ কেন ? 
তার কথা  শুনে যুবকদের কারো মনে কোন দয়া এল না , শিকল টানা হল । রেল কর্মচারী ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছলে যুবকগুলি একযোগে বৃদ্ধের উপর দোষ চাপিয়ে দিল ।




 রেল কর্মচারী বৃদ্ধকে বলল -  এই বয়সে বাচ্চাদের মত কাজ করতে আপনার লজ্জা করল না ? 
বৃদ্ধ হাত জোড় করে বলল -  সাহেব,  খুব অসুবিধায় পড়ে আমাকে শিকল টানতে হয়েছে । 
রেল কর্মচারী জিজ্ঞাসা করল -  কি অসুবিধা ?  বৃদ্ধ বলল - আমার কাছে বারোশো টাকা ছিল ।  এই কটি ছেলে আমার পুরো টাকা ছিনিয়ে নিয়েছে । 



এখন সমস্ত টাকা এই ছেলেটির পকেটে রাখা আছে । 

রেল কর্মচারী তার সঙ্গে থাকা পুলিশকে ছেলেটির তল্লাশি নেওয়ার হুকুম দিলে সেই প্রথম যুবকটির পকেট থেকে বারোশো টাকা উদ্ধার হল । পুরো টাকা বৃদ্ধকে দিয়ে দেওয়া হল । 

আর যুবক গুলিকে গ্রেপ্তার করে তাদেরকে পরবর্তী স্টেশনে  রেলওয়ে পুলিশের কাছে হস্তান্তর করা হল । যাওয়ার সময় যুবকগুলি বৃদ্ধের দিকে সরোষে তাকিয়ে দেখলে বৃদ্ধ তার সাদা দাড়িতে হাত বোলাতে  বোলাতে বলল -  এগুলো এমনি এমনি সাদা হয়ে যায় নি ।
