Yes .. steem is undervalued and underrated. It's just three years old it has shown tremendous growth and it's community is increasing rapidly. 

Better days will come for steem.

I do think Steemit is underrated but its because its been underperforming. Until we can reduce our churn rate, improve our retention and really show users there is a place for them here to interact and build their personal brand or community it will continue to be a unfulfilled potential we look at. 

I think we need to focus steem's message to users less on the money making aspect and more on the free to do as you please and not being advertised to or having your data collected and used. I just feel the whole make money angle just attracts people for short term gains and those who stay are those who just feel this is better than traditional social media 

Once you've established that user base these users will then filter out to the various dapps and projects they find interesting in the ecosystem. We need to really lay out a welcome mat

I agree - I believe Steem is underrated, too. It's been a mystery to me why the price is not rising, when we have a decent amount of daily active users and so many dapps! 

While prominent people might do well in bringing more awareness to Steem, I do not agree that it's the trust in *them* that would (well, *should*) have any influence on investors or the price. The whole blockchain space is about being "trustless" - meaning you trust in code and the network, rather than in individuals. 

However I came to the conclusion recently that this EXACTLY is the problem: Ned (or Steemit Inc) and their large stake, which he/they can power down at any moment. Ned has shown the community (and the world, and any potential investor) that he's ready to do that. To me, he's holding Steem hostage, to be honest. If I were a large investor, I wouldn't invest for this one single reason. I do not trust him/them. 
As long as this is not solved, as long as Steem is not truly liberated from that - I don't think we'll see Steem truly taking off. 

It's sad. I love Steem, but I believe that this one issue - which proves the lack of  decentralisation and "trustlessness" of Steem - is the main reason why potential investors are waiting for something better to come along, that is truly decentralised and has a higher chance for survival long-term.

You are correct about personality like some figurehead for STEEM. But, I believe that STEEM have onboarding and adoption problem. 

Compare STEEM to a hundred of cryptocurrency from Bitcoin to rank 200. Aside from EOS, all of them are very easy to onboard. Anyone can create a wallet in an instant.

I prefer the Bitshares model where you can have free account with username + numbers and paid one if you want to just have a short name like on STEEM.

Dlive registration made me realize that people just want an instant registration process like other crypto wallet which create address in an instant.

hey Marly, I would say that in part you might be right about the figurehead but the more prominent someone is the more centralised the project.
I have another theory as to why we are on coinmarketcap where we are.
The Steem blockchain has a rewards pool that awards "free" Steem every day and as long as there are more people selling their steem than powering up this will not change.

Hi, I think you are right... or mostly right. I think the steem community were waiting a long time for Steemit to take a lead... and then realised that it would be better to just get on with it. There has been a real energy around steem in the last few months (despite the low value - or maybe because of it). We are not going to get a charasmatic leader, but we do have a lot of charasmatic dapps (you mentioned steemengine, for example, but also the gaming dapps are MASSIVE) and I think these will make up for it! :)

Trust, it seems to me, is a big factor, and not having a concentrated, effective marketing plan isn't helpful, either, but which crypto projects really have something like that and how are they accomplishing it? Where do people go to get exposed to that kind of marketing? I mean, there's been ads on Facebook and elsewhere, and then those were taken away, and now they're coming back. So, is it word of mouth that is supposed to be spreading? Are there ads that are supposed to be popping up on sites?

How do these other projects get where they are? How did EOS get so much capitalization, when Dan has been bouncing from one project to the next?

Most blockchains don't have anything on them other than people making some form of crypto transactions. The most recent ones, like STEEM, are designed to do more, like having dApps running on them, but few of those have what's going on here—an active, decent-sized group of users and a sense of community.

So, I agree. What is it? Are we still paying for what has been perpetually called a poor distribution (because every now and then there's an article popping up about that, even off chain), or how the whales dominate here, or how it's tough to make STEEM as a creator? Negative press seems to be what we get. But why? How are we any worse than any other chain? And how is it that they are any better, when they're essentially doing the exact same things, perhaps to different degrees and different ways?

I don't know. It could be a number of reasons, or none of them. It could be that by leading out as a social media site that pays, we've narrowed the scope of what investors can see us doing, when in reality, STEEM can be so much more than that. When people think of social media, what to do they think about? Memes and article sharing? If that's it, is there actual value in either of that? If I didn't know that there were actual content creators here, I would say no, there's no value in sharing memes and articles.

I think onboarding has not been what's been promised. I think it's hard to get oriented and get started (though hopefully that's changing), I think in our quest to be decentralized, we have no main message to give anyone, and we have no main focus. We spread whatever resources we have based on whatever pet project anyone wants to do (and maybe that will be changing, too).

Maybe three years is too short to be expecting a serious, robust and thriving blockchain. Maybe we keep getting ahead of ourselves before the foundation is poured and dried.

There's certainly a lot that glitters out there in the crypto space, and until the great culling takes place, we're just one of hundreds out there, that hasn't been tooting it's own horn loud enough, so the narrative is being carried by others who have little to no vested interest in STEEM.

Hi surfermarly - this is indeed a very interesting question! I do think Steem is underrated as it has so many functioning use cases that many higher cap cryptos do not. As Steem has so many use cases already and longevity it should represent a better investment and get higher prices once this is recognised! The Crypto space is very young - the learning curve has been very steep!

usually it is the singer and not the song that makes a sound popular, 
it helps to have some personalities on board which is part of marketing. 
I believe that is what's lagging or lacking,
 the promotion stuff.

The one problem with Steem is the ever increasing supply that we all know exists, but don't ever talk about it.
At current market cap, as at this time last year, Steem would have been closer to $1, but with the ever increasing supply, it's left to be seen just how long it takes for the inflation rate, to rally more than the rate of money coming into Steem.

Secondly, every divided house will find success hard to attain, Steem pioneers and founders leaving Steem blockchain is bad finger pointing at steem because, we’re living in a world of rivalries, I expected that when a deep question like this is asked,  that Steem top pioneers should come onboard and explain things out; but you hardly see them attending to this type of meaningful questions.

In conclusion, the future is bright for Steem but then we must remain united and humble. Every project must be consistent in upgrading things so that we don’t end up with DApps and projects that has low or no problem solving capacity. Come on Marlene; we’re living in a world where unprofessional  services are frowned at!
