&nbsp;&nbsp;El autobús finalmente se detiene en el pequeño poblado luego de más de 10 horas de camino, fue mi elección embarcarme en esta aventura para alejarme del mundo conocido lo más posible, ya no aguantaba las miradas incesantes de todos en el recinto de trabajo, mi vida se convirtió en el tema preferido de los chismosos hablando a mis espaldas, sobre como mi novia del trabajo me engañó tan descaradamente en la fiesta de fin de año.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Sin dudas, fue un evento desafortunado que nunca me vi venir, jamás pensé que una relación medianamente estable de dos años de duración pudiera desmoronarse con el impulso de algunas copas de vino, ¿Quién en su sano juicio llegaría a la conclusión de que mi novia se pondría ebria y gritaría a los 4 vientos que era la amante del jefe?, reclamando de una vez por todas un puesto a su lado. Bueno, obviamente muchos de mis colegas sabían más que yo y por supuesto que sí lo veían venir, pero a mí me tomó por total sorpresa prácticamente haciéndome sentir desnudo ante la multitudinaria audiencia, que casi de inmediato voltearon sus miradas afiladas contra este pobre cuerpo deshecho, luego del discurso donde todo quedó en evidencia.

&nbsp;&nbsp;La vergüenza carcomía mi ser, cada mañana al mirarme al espejo me increpaba sobre como pude ser tan tonto, qué imbécil soy como hombre al no poder darme cuenta de pistas tan claras que aún hoy me cuestan convencerme de que sea verdad. La primera parte fue la negación, pero luego me sobrevino un deseo fatal de ira y venganza contra ambos personajes, de alguna manera encontraría la forma de hacerles pagar por todo el daño que me profirieron, así que preferí alejarme de todo, largarme al menos por un par de meses de la ciudad y alojarme en uno de los pueblos más alejados de España, hasta que las cosas se calmaran o yo desapareciera con el tiempo en la inmensidad del mundo.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Algunos dicen que las oportunidades surgen en el momento adecuado, por eso cuando vi la oferta de trabajo para un ingeniero proyectista, que se encargará de hacer el plan de restauración del viejo sanatorio de tuberculosis, no dudé en aceptarlo. Era exactamente lo que estaba buscando, un sitio solitario y rodeado de campo donde la persona más cercana se encontraba a dos kilómetros de distancia en el pueblo de San Gerónimo, justo el punto final de la ruta del autobús donde acabo de desembarcar.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Con los primeros rayos del sol me lancé a la caminata por el bosque para conocer el tétrico lugar abandonado y empezar mi ardua tarea de medición y levantamiento de planos, eso a pesar de las advertencias de la hermosa mujer del hostal donde pasé una de las noches más cómodas de mi vida, especialmente por la tranquilidad de saber que ya nadie se burla de mí, aquí no me conocen y todos son personas muy amables, precisamente fueron tan sinceros conmigo, al asegurarme que el sanatorio de tuberculosis está maldito, razón por lo cual ningún ingeniero había aceptado ese trabajo en tanto tiempo desde que su dueño está intentando remodelarlo.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Los cuentos de la gente del pueblo no me amilanaron ni un poco, al llegar a esta inmensa estructura solo le di una larga mirada de arriba abajo, respiré profundo y me inspiré como nunca a empezar con mis labores, instalando el campamento donde dormiría en lo que alguna vez fue la oficina del director del hospital, la cual debo comentar estaba lujosamente decorada y se mantenía intacta al paso del tiempo, también era el único lugar con baño, electricidad y agua limpia.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Las cosas comenzaron a tornarse complicadas en la noche, la llegada de la oscuridad hizo mella en mis sentidos en un espacio tan grande y solitario, donde el viento silbaba sin cesar, haciendo ecos que parecían el llanto de personas desesperadas, suplicando por ayuda. En este punto los nervios me traicionaban, respondía intuitivamente con un salto a cualquier ruido por pequeño que fuera, sentía como se me erizaba la piel conforme corrían las horas. Un frío espeluznante se aferró a mi espalda como un agresor silente, que se encajaba hasta lo profundo de mi alma simulando una daga de hielo.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Estando ya a las puertas de la ensoñación, totalmente derrotado por el cansancio y el desasosiego de una noche en vela, desconcertado y abrumado por un miedo lacerante que carcomía mi mente en aquel lugar, donde los espíritus de las personas fallecidas seguramente deambulan aún sin rumbo, comencé a escuchar como el sonido cavernoso de una manifestación sobrenatural se expandía por paredes y techos, era como un golpe seco que martillaba una y otra vez a un paso lento intentando traspasar las puertas de este mundo.

&nbsp;&nbsp;El horror me hacía temblar como gelatina, ¿qué diablos golpeaba de esa forma?, ¿tendría algún efecto responderle?, o al menos preguntarle ¿qué desea?, no lo sé, no comprendo nada de espíritus más allá de lo que he visto en las películas, pero igual tengo demasiado miedo como para eso. El golpeteo continúa sin cesar, es una tortura en mi mente y la ausencia de sueño lo hace peor, luego de varias horas ya estoy al borde de la locura, es más terrible que el famoso tormento chino de la gota, entonces siento como la ira y la rabia se apoderan de mí nuevamente, exactamente igual que cuando clavé esa hacha en el cuerpo de mi exnovia y su amante antes de huir de la ciudad, ahora estoy armado con un pico de construcción y estoy dispuesto a enfrentarme a lo que sea fantasma o no.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Así que con un desenfreno desesperado, me dirijo al pasillo en medio de la penumbra para encontrar el origen del ruido, fue en ese momento cuando todo mi mundo colapsó y solo pude descargar mi ferocidad lanzando un enorme grito de rabia que retumbó en toda la antigua edificación, cuando descubrí que el ruido era solo una ardilla golpeando una bellota contra el piso, afortunadamente al menos era suficientemente gorda para darme un buen desayuno y calmar mis ansias en medio de esta locura.

&nbsp;&nbsp;The bus finally stops in the small town after more than 10 hours of driving, it was my choice to embark on this adventure to get as far away from the known world as possible, I could no longer stand the incessant stares of everyone in the work compound, my life became the favorite topic of gossipers talking behind my back, about how my girlfriend at work cheated on me so blatantly at the New Year's Eve party.

The first part was denial, but then I was overcome by a fatal desire for anger and revenge against both characters, somehow I would find a way to make them pay for all the damage they did to me, so I preferred to get away from everything, to get away at least for a couple of months from the city and stay in one of the most remote villages in Spain, until things calmed down or I would eventually disappear in the vastness of the world.

It was exactly what I was looking for, a lonely place surrounded by countryside where the nearest person was two kilometers away in the town of San Geronimo, just the end point of the bus route where I had just disembarked.

At this point my nerves betrayed me, I intuitively responded with a jump to any noise, no matter how small, and I felt my skin crawl as the hours went by. An eerie cold clung to my back like a silent assailant, which was embedded deep in my soul, simulating an ice dagger.
 
Being already at the gates of reverie, totally defeated by the tiredness and uneasiness of a sleepless night, bewildered and overwhelmed by a lacerating fear that gnawed at my mind in that place, where the spirits of deceased people surely still wander, I began to hear how the cavernous sound of a supernatural manifestation expanded through walls and ceilings, it was like a sharp blow that hammered again and again at a slow pace trying to break through the doors of this world.
 
The horror made me tremble like jelly, what the hell was it knocking like that, would it have any effect to answer it, or at least ask it what it wants, I don't know, I don't understand anything about spirits beyond what I've seen in movies, but I'm still too scared for that. The pounding continues unabated, it is torture in my mind and the absence of sleep makes it worse, after several hours I am already on the verge of madness, it is more terrible than the famous Chinese torment of gout, then I feel anger and rage take over me again, the same as when I drove that axe into the body of my ex-girlfriend and her lover before fleeing the city, now I am armed with a construction pickaxe, and I am ready to face whatever is a ghost or not.
 
So with a desperate rampage, I head to the hallway in the middle of the gloom to find the source of the noise, it was at that moment that my whole world collapsed, and I can only vent my ferocity by launching a huge scream of rage that echoed throughout the old building, when I discovered that the noise was just a squirrel hitting an acorn against the floor, fortunately at least it was fat enough to give me a good breakfast and calm my anxieties amid this madness.
