Gecenin zirvesi, uykumun ortası; kalp atışlarımın sesiyle uyandım. Yastıktan kafamı kaldırıp yatakta oturduğum süre boyunca, ne kadar terlediğimi anlayamamıştım. Elimi göğsüme götürüp kalp atışlarımı takip etmek istediğimde; atletimin sırılsıklamlığı anlatmıştı bana bu durumu. 

Gecenin ortasında, tatlı ve derin bir uykudan bu şekilde uyanmış olmama sebep olanın ne olduğunu idrak edememiştim. Bir kâbus ya da ne bileyim sıkıntılı bir rüya içerisinde de değildim. Kafamı ellerimin arasına aldım ve bir müddet düşündüm. Bir yokluğun yoklamasına maruz kalmış bir halin ruhunu taşımaya çalışıyordu sanki hücrelerim. 

Hücrelerimin fütursuzluğuna takılıp kalamadan, ellerimin arasından kafam akıp gitmeye başladı. Ellerim artık boşlukta dalgalanıyorlardı. 

Titreye titreye vücudumun geri kalanına dokunup, bedenimin varlığının sağlamasını gerçekleştirmeye yöneldim. Neyse ki vücudumda başka hiçbir eksik yoktu. Yeniden kafama dokunmaya çalıştım fakat bedenimin üzerinde duruyor olması gereken kafam yerinde bulunmuyordu. 

Ürkek hareketlerle yataktan kalktım ve odanın ışığını açtım. Sonra yatağın tam karşısında duran dolabın sağında duran boy aynasının karşısına geçerek kendime baktım. Kafasız bir beden olarak aynadaki yansımamı çok net görebiliyordum. 

Gözlerim de yoktu oysa. Kafamla beraber üzerindeki her uzvum da kaybolmuştu ama ben yine de görebiliyordum.

Işığı kapattım ve yatağıma geri döndüm. Yastığa koyacak bir kafam olmasa da kafam varmış gibi yastığa gereken saygıyı göstererek uyudum. Sabah olunca güneşin sancılı doğumu ile uyanmıştım. 

Banyoya giderek musluğu açtım. Yıkayacak bir yüzüm yoktu; sadece ellerimi yıkamaktı amacım. 

Musluktan çamur fışkırdı, köpek havladı. Ben odaya kaçtım. Pencereden kuşlar girdi, ben pencereden dışarıya baktım,  sokaktaki insanlar da bana.

Kafasızlığımı fark edecekler diye çok korktum, etmediler. Ben de onların yaptıklarını fark etmemiş gibi yaptım.

İçimdeki kâfirler ve İçimdeki imanlar çoktular
Yine de çok korktular.
