Lessons from 3D Printing - Expecting the Unexpected - III
Sometimes you are trying to print something from your 3D printer, and it does not come out the way you want it. There is possibly frustration in the midst of that. But although it may seem to be a waste of time, understanding what comes out of the "failed" project may sometimes give something unexpected. Here are two examples to illustrate this.

***

Example 1:
I was trying to test some connecting parts in order to see what the design limitation is. Unfortunately, something happened in the first layer - and all my holes became bigger than I expected.

![photo_2017-04-07_17-06-05.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTLK6mxfMRshWtq7FmJ4WfnntCeWvT3RRF8j3PZabPWdz/photo_2017-04-07_17-06-05.jpg)
Fig. 1 - The Two Parts

Vid. 1 - It is somehow working.

However, when I was playing around with the plank (it has a height of 0.5mm), I noticed that it acted as an interesting spring as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLDKBtdbuJc&feature=youtu.be
Vid. 2 - 3D-printed Part as a Spring

It gives ideas about how this particular property of the 3D-printed part can be used in future designs.

***

Example 2:
I was printing this out for my project, but because of my printer settings, it printed faster than I expected. Before the print could go on to the second layer, I stopped the print.

![photo_2017-04-07_17-06-16.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXHfTVLLVs9qhvM6qGdeeyfoLjnbmiHuX8GEiSESzrtwP/photo_2017-04-07_17-06-16.jpg)
Fig. 2 - Failed Print?

This print had a layer height of only 0.2mm - giving it this rather flimsy attribute. In a way, you might think it is a very brittle cloth if you bend it too much.

![photo_2017-04-07_17-06-12.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWWen2mzS9q43V1Tf6TpyjBbeF2ft8jxumMkeQNENm9NZ/photo_2017-04-07_17-06-12.jpg)
Fig. 3 - Looks like Cloth

While I do not know how this property may be used for future designs, it is something worth keeping in mind, in case a future project requires such an attribute from the printed part.

***

We often look forward to something expected, and if it does not happen, and something else comes out, we tend to become disappointed and frustrated. But perhaps, out of that something unexpected, there are lessons to be learnt. We may well learn to expect the unexpected, as well as to expect lessons from these instances.

Cool! I love the idea of having a 3D printer at home, I keep creating silly designs in Windows 3d builder.
Would you show us some of your good results?
Would you guide us through the process of choosing the right materials for differnt jobs?

Thanks, FOLLOW to make sure I get your designs!

Hahaha, it is pretty fascinating being able to create what you want in your own home whenever you want it. Especially if your designs are just sitting in your computer.

Most of the stuff that I do right now with the 3D printer has got to do with school projects, so it may be a bit confidential due to the university's IP and all (I'm not really sure about it). But I'm open to posting my own designs up on Steem for you all to have a look - when I get them they will be up here!

Hmm, right now the materials that I am working with are limited (I have only used ABS or PLA for the 3D printing method I am using, which is "fused deposition modelling", or FDM), so it may be difficult at this point of time to talk through the right materials for different jobs. But I have seen metal-infused plastic being used with FDM, so if there's a possibility I might explore that type of filament and possibly write an article with the various filaments for various jobs. It's actually quite exciting for me - the possibility of being able to print metal at home, hahaha.

That said, I have used Shapeways before to print a design - they have many materials (and different manufacturing methods for different materials), so you could take a look at it - I will post the link below!

Well, there are also other considerations when we come to printing jobs. Speed is one consideration. The faster the printer, the less it is able to deal with fine details, and vice versa. The nozzle size of your print is also critical - if your print has a minimum thickness that is less than your nozzle size you may not get what you expect. All these are just some things off my head - I may compile these considerations one day accordingly.

Thanks for the follow! I look forward to posts from you.
