AI AI AI
Yesterday, I wrote a fictional story about an aware AI that spent its processing powers hunting enemies of the state down for prosecution. Maybe these things are figments of the imagination but, how long until a reality? It is very hard to predict because as the development of AI itself advances, so does its ability to improve itself.

Google and Microsoft and I am sure many others already have AI that can code itself by stealing code from other programs. This could potentially make my life much easier as I am not a coder and as I keep reiterating, largely technologically handicapped. Something like this could mean that I would be able to describe my requirements and the Artificial Intelligence will get to work on the mechanics on how to achieve it. That would be pretty incredible wouldn't it?

https://i.imgur.com/M7WWiZ8.jpg

Yes, the coding is relatively rudimentary currently but, how long until the average software coder is out of a job? At the speed at which an AI will be able to process code and the vastly increased source reach, there are very few coders in the world who will be able to keep up, and this may not be that far away. Who can really say?

Currently, we can predict how AI is going to act because it is *close* to the coder meaning, not very far removed from a human experience. but, the more it starts to develop itself, the more it moves away from that flesh core and the less predictable it may become to us. We do not know exactly how it is going to think once its code outgrows what we know or can imagine.

In many way, even if not *aware*, the processing that goes on inside is a mystery to us in some cases already as there is a blackbox system that absorbs inputs and expels outputs without us seeing the working. What goes on inside is a complex process of decision making much like our own except, it may be nothing like our own. At least, it may not be in the future.

There are some AIs that learn from observing and replicating us (for example to drive a car) but just because it acts like us, does not mean it *thinks* like us. There may be a completely different hierarchy that influences its decisions, it may notice and account for things we do not, it may combine experiences in ways we cannot and, it may be processing all of this in its 'awareness' at literally, lightning speeds.

One interesting thing I find with AI is that it knows what we do not. Think about your own decision making processes, why did you choose cereal instead of toast for breakfast, or why is your favourite colour green? Can you really answer? Is it possible for you to be aware of every interaction that has led up to the decision?

The decision still gets made but all but the most obvious of factors from our experience that led to it are not held in our awareness, not recallable, hidden even from us. We are our own blackbox. This is likely different for AI though as it is can trace the digital pathways that led it to the decision and perhaps through experience and simulation, be able create a vastly superior decision making process to our own.

What will this change in our world? Potentially everything. Big data can be trawled continually for solutions to everything from illness to resource allocation, technological innovations can be aided by high speed simulation and education is likely to advance in leaps and bounds as an AI can tailor for each student with personal sensitivity. It would be an amazing world. Potentially.

It could also be used to restrict and control, oppress and harm. It could be used to advance the spoils of greed to levels unimaginable. Would it do our bidding, will it realise that we are undeserving of relative utopia? We cannot say, no one can. We can only imagine what could come about, where it could lead.

We can suggest we know how an artificial brain will behave when free, how it will evolve itself in time and the speed at which it will do this but, we are kidding ourselves for we cannot factor in all factors, especially those that are unimaginable to us.

We think our predictive abilities are sound, we think we are intelligent enough to understand and estimate, calculate, control life. The problem is with AI, it is not going to be life as we know it, it is going to be something different altogether.

How do you think AI is going to affect your life and our world in the next 10 years? What about 100? If you write a post based on this, please link it below so we can spider web ideas out. Perhaps one day, an intelligent AI will trawl the blockchain, discover your article and base its next decision on it.

I am not sure if we are going to need to worry about AI. It seems my thoughts on this change from day today. The Artificial Intelligence does not necessarily mean sentient. (self aware) I can see two or three paths that Hollywood and future fiction writers have presented to us as in is it going to be like "I Robot" or more like "AI - the movie" or even like "Centennial Man - Robin Williams movie". I am sure there are other possibilities, Cylons, Borg's, Data types, Westworld, Future World, Terminator.

What questions will an AI ask itself, what answers will it accept from itself? What open-ended questions will it find, what questions can it answer for itself, and what questions will drive it to exploration, inner and outer.

I think the beginning age of AI will be an exciting time for everyone.

Taraz knows this link would be dropped. Take some time and read and digest it: [how deep learning will affect everybody's professional career](https://medium.com/basic-income/deep-learning-is-going-to-teach-us-all-the-lesson-of-our-lives-jobs-are-for-machines-7c6442e37a49)

I think about AI about 10 times a day. It is so scary/ interesting to me. I really love to drive. I don't want that to be taken away from me. I can just see it becoming illegal soon... The biggest risk in driving will be human error. Then I try to think about how history repeats itself and maybe something created us to help out and we totally became egotistical and took over. Now it is our turn to create something that will just see us as "Stupid animals". Blah...

> the coding is relatively rudimentary currently but, how long until the average software coder is out of a job.

As soon as tech (devs) wants that to happen. AI can already learn from its mistakes and correct errors in code. Deep Learning is much further ahead than most think. 2020, if wanted, would be doomsday already and the world could be reduced for most programming tasks to probably 50-200 developers only. Someone still needs to ~~bias~~ programme the AI/learning engine. It wonโ€™t happen that fast though, 2030 is much more realistic but Moore's law likes to mess with things. Those graduating now from high/secondary school (K-12) will definitely not experience a full professional career anymore.

Currently, I donโ€™t think AI will affect too much already in First World in the next few years. Lower level outsourced jobs in development nations will suffer though. The only reason why I think progress will take a little longer is because this time everybody is acutely aware that society, and regulatory frameworks, arenโ€™t ready for that revolution yet. There is a reason why Silicon Valley are the biggest proponents of Universal Base Wage. If you think that reason is because they know the pace of progress, then youโ€™re spot on.

In the next decade I also expect that regulators will heavily tax companies who replace (local) jobs with AI.

As for your *AI hunters*, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and others have started lobbying for AI to not be allowed to make decisions over life or death.

Yes, I think that it won't be too long until they are running heavily in the background to begin with and then replacing jobs as time goes on. Honestly, if all you have to reply to this post and my comment is โ€œ*nice!*โ€, chances are you are one of the people why the revolution is still throttled.

Not only does everything seem to make the same sound to you as deadlines to Douglas Coupland, *Whoosh*, but you also donโ€™t bring anything to the discussion. Meaning that you could possibly be one of those most prone to be eradicated by the AI revolution, unless those aware of the societal dangers first build frameworks to catch those who โ€œdidnt see it come until it was too late alreadyโ€.

Try a little harder adding value to the discussion next time. Other commenters or authors may downvote you for no-value comment spam like yours. You donโ€™t want to end up buried on the Steemit Graveyard.

@greer184 ·
I think in the next several years AI will start showing up in different specific applications. I don't think there are systems that allow cross-domain learning yet, but when they figure that out, that is when I would start worrying. A cross-domain learner could learn to be a chess whiz and could learn how to drive a car using the same knowledge base and apply that knowledge to completely novel situations. As of writing this, AI can't really to this (but we're pretty good at it).

As for sentient AI, I'm a weak AI person. I don't think machines will ever develop intentional behavior (consciousness remains a mystery to us). A good argument to illustrate this is John Searle's [Chinese Room]( http://faculty.umb.edu/gary_zabel/Courses/Bodies,%20Souls,%20and%20Robots/Texts/AI%20and%20Robotics/The%20Chinese%20Room%20A.htm) thought experiment. So, there will be no AIs with existential crises running around.

That being said, AI's ability to automate complex behaviors and the corruptibility of humans make AI dangerous. There is also the whole syntax versus semantic issue to deal with too. That's bound to create some potential issues when the machine understands something different than their programmer understands something. While its technically a "bug", such unintentional behavior could lead to devastating results if the machine is given a high degree of responsibility.

I think that the TV-Show Person of Interest showed a bit about how that tech could be used and misused by government and groups that have other goals than the safety of the people in mind.

I think that AI can be a lot of help on a lot of subjects, but they should be very cautious creating them. But ok... we all know that humans don't make mistakes, so we're totally fine... :D
