Hi, my friend @tarazkp. Very interesting your reflection on digital interaction and its possible effects. I agree that the excessive use of screens can have consequences, and it is an issue that touches many of us, even those of us who actively participate in platforms like Hive.

You raise a critical view of “degeneration”, but perhaps the motivation is not always an avoidance of human complexity or a simple escape from loneliness. Sometimes, as you mention about the lack of connection, the screen becomes a space to share or express oneself when confidants are not easily found in the physical environment. Not so much out of ‘hiding’ from complexity, but out of a search for connection that, for a variety of reasons, may not be available in other ways.

Your final call for intentionality and creating personal “new algorithms” resonates very much. Finding that balance between the digital and the physical is certainly the great challenge.

The sad part about is that no matter how much we work on ourselves, examine our values, be self aware, considerate - the majority is not on that path. Yet. The pendulum swings, and hopefully this age of superficiality will be over soon. I mean, how much more superficial can it get? Stupid question, I know, I had the same question 10 years ago and here we are...

The community part is important. Can we find those who share enough values with us in order to form a deeper connection? And if not, how much can we ourselves rub off on others?

Is the only thing we can do work on ourselves and hope it makes a difference? Or do we have to get into activism, and if so, how? The most likely thing to work would be becoming an influencer with 20second clips that explain in simple words why we have to let children bump their head. And, ironically, to stop consuming 20 sec clips.

I actually have post I am trying to gather resources for that kind of fits with this.  I am hoping to maybe get it written up next week.  It actually will cover a couple of subjects it looks like.  I think there has always been a stigma around the idea of getting help for mental health.  Whether it is right or wrong, we know that people (especially men) for the most part don't like to talk about their feelings.  I can see where someone might be more comfortable trying to work stuff through with AI, but I understand your point that taking the human element out of the whole process is a very dangerous slope.

I feel lonely when I feel like I'm surrounded by people who don't match my own level of self perceived intellect, whatever that is. 

It is strange, I so often feel lonely in a crowd of people. I wrote some stuff about this on @galenkp's post the other day. 

The concept of this being the degeneracy of those surrounding me, or perhaps, my own degeneracy of not being able to operate on their level (which may be higher than my own) - the level of intellect, not degeneracy, that is - almost makes me want to see if an AI companion might be right for me :P 

Having said that, I've been consuming so much science fiction lately, I know that the idea of AI companions isn't a great one!  

On the broader topic of degeneracy, however - haven't we all been over the fact that everyone in every generation complains about the youth being less able, being more care free, being less useful since antiquity? 

How have we continued to exist as a species with this alleged constant slide into degeneracy? 

The devices are additive. We operate on a frequency level that sucks us in and is difficult to distance ourselves from. It takes great effort to do so! 

The good stuff is how much easier it can be to learn new things - the world is truly at our fingertips, as long as we don't go always to the same places online. 

This reminds me of a bat mitzvah I went to a dozen years ago. Smart phones were suddenly everywhere, in every teenager's hands.  Just a few years before then, bat and bar mitzvahs were big dance and play parties, but this particular bat mitzvah had only the grown ups dancing, and the teens were ALL sitting at their table staring at their phones. It was shocking! Then covid got many of us working in our homes, all the kids learning in their homes on screens. We have been conditioned to believe that truly living means spening a great many hours each day staring at screens. Unfortunately, it has become necessary to do so.

Degeneracy in an increase of gullibility, among other things. If it talks the way no one else talks to one, with comfort and understanding, a lonely person will believe anything it says. Stockholm syndrome-esque. Very dangerous.

Artificial intelligence is one of the important inventions of our time. It seems to be a solution to many things. However, it causes many problems in terms of emotionality. Such as loneliness, immaturity. We do not know what surprises life will present to us, we have to be prepared for this. Overcoming anxiety, reducing it to a minimum level, establishing emotional and mental resilience are necessary for our lives.

Until AI gains intelligence, I will not consider it an equal interlocutor. And therefore, I will not be interested in having conversations with it.

Few days ago, one of my colleagues who lives alone were talking about ChatGPT and I evesdropped. He said that when he gets bored he chat with ChatGPT. I found it strange and said to myself what the hell is that 😄
