All kinds of language welcome
This is just a reminder for a few people that come into the platform in regards to quality of content. Quality is subjective and always will be however, as a business English teacher for fifteen odd years, grammar does matter. But rarely as much as some people claim.

I am the Australian and if I be speak not so goodly, not great the impression made gets. However, as a person that teaches people who speak between three and eight or nine languages compared to my one, I am pretty forgiving on article, preposition or spelling errors. As someone who writes between two thousand and five thousand words most days, I am also pretty forgiving on typos and I have the presence of mind to reorder and overlook on the fly without it interrupting my flow.

Some people think that programs like *Grammarly* should be used yet, it is a plugin and I am not overly comfortable using it. You may trust them, it doesn't mean I must. The second and more important aspect of using such programs is that they are competitive cognitive artefacts. This means that they replace our need to learn and improve and will lead to a lower ability for us to learn across other domains also. The long-ranging affects of these are largely unknown but, rarely is a lower ability to learn and develop various regions of the brain going to amount to increased successes.

https://i.imgur.com/Y297Xfx.jpg

The next issue when it comes to quality of written expression is that for many, writing is not their core skill and there are many artists and technical developers who can be brilliant in their field yet have low language ability. I know that I am not bad at my work in *Personnel development* but, if I was to do it in Finnish (the only other language I can get-by in), I would sound like I had an IQ of 17.

Now, as a native speaker and even those who are very good non-native speakers of English, it is easy to judge others work based upon their level of correctness yet, most do not consider how languages work. You yourself may not realise how many of the words you speak are just randomly made up. Did you know that Shakespeare added around 1700 words to our vocabularies? Here are a few I clipped from online:

https://i.imgur.com/Mba2aFW.png

Words themselves are an art form that very few seem to use well, even though they may use them with grammatical accuracy. What most may find is that the greatest of writers are those who broke the rules, which is a common thread in the greatest people across most domains.

For some, the transportation of the idea is enough and grammar and vocabulary matter very little, for others it is of vital importance but just like any work of art, the importance of grammar is subjective. Personally for me, it depends on the kinds of articles I read but, as a professional who has travelled to many different countries and worked with many different language backgrounds, I am likely much more forgiving than those who have been echo-chambered in a single language. I find I am much less forgiving on native speakers who make common errors though.

There is also the difference in opportunity for education and availability of resources and assuming all have had quality schooling in language is a large reach as many are self-taught from what they can find. Judging and dismissing people based upon their spoken ability will result in a lot of intelligence and talent going undiscovered and unrewarded. Also, assuming that all other things are equal in the creation of content is a narrow view.

Sure, you may have the possibility to go over your material with a fine-toothed comb but, have you considered you are in a position of privilege in this greater world, or do you assume that all enjoy such luxury of time? Do you also work under the assumption that you are the target market for every article posted here? Many that are the most critical of language are often those who have not really had to learn another and the support of lower language skills is often by those who understand the struggle.

Having said this, I do think that people should consistently attempt to improve the presentation of their content, including their written language skills as for many, it is an influencing factor in giving support. The benefit of paying attention to this will also result in higher personal skills and most likely, an increased speed of delivery. This can be utilised in the real world environment and open many doors of practical value.

In chat, I actually spend a little bit of time correcting friend's grammar and word choice as they are often highly talented people who will benefit from some tweaking of their language. Like we all. Everyone can improve and some of the most outspoken of us on the subject of language skills often fail to recognise the errors we ourselves make. We are blind to our own shortcomings.

The thing that I love about Steemit is the diversity of people and information on offer and for me, the delivery and phrasing of the content itself. I love hearing the translated idioms that give a view of a culture or are often, much more colourful than my own stale choices. It would be a shame if everyone followed the rules in my opinion.

For me, when it comes to quality of content, I am happy to read poor text if it is somewhat coherent and tells a story from an interesting perspective. Effort also plays a role in my evaluation and even though I cannot actually know what work goes in, I get a feel for it.

My content ranges across various genres and I write in a variety of styles as I like to challenge myself. Do I expect that I will not make errors as I cut and paste words here or there, delete across paragraphs, change the tense and forget to shift the entire sentence? Do I expect everyone to love every piece of my work? No, I am fallible in many, many ways. You are not?

Be charitable, as you never know when you may require the grace of strangers.

This is a notion I need to break. I tend to associate quality, even level, of education with how well a person writes in English. I know there's a bigger picture I'm missing out, but it seems like society (especially here in my country) is influencing how I think about the usage of the language.

This article reinforces the idea that I should exert more effort to abandon that notion. I need to look more into the intention, the story and the idea behind rather than the structure.

It's easy to be blind. It's easy to think that we are "better" whereas in fact we might have missed out the point. What's "better" about that?

By the way, the cover photo is amazing. Is it pulled out from your portfolio?

At the very least, we can practice understanding of others.

It is sweet of you to understand that. In my country, the people who are unable to speak english are looked with repugnance. When i came here on steemit i realized that there are people doing really good in their own language. I never judged people on the basis of their tongue anyway but it just made me more free to speak in my own language anywhere. In india, most of the people know how to speak english, but only a few know how to call some things in hindi.

Steemit is breaking the language barrier. Stwemit is breaking so many rules, rigid and narrow mindsets. It is a revolution. Thanks for your support to all the tongues !! 👍🏻

It's unfair to look down on people who don't speak English. Especially with repugnance. That is repugnant! It takes a lot of effort to learn a foreign language, and not everyone has the time, ability, resources, or interest to do so. People's choices should be respected.

English is the world's emerging lingua franca, however. So I believe the solution to this unfortunate arrogance of those who speak my language is to help those who want to learn English, and respect those who don't want to learn.

Steemit is helping many, many people learn English AND helping many people who simply want to communicate in their own language!

Truly, Steemit is helping break the language barriers!

-Cheers from America

I like the critic you're doing here, looking at the situation from different perspectives. I agree that the material we read *should* be judged based on what it says instead of how it is said. But still, its also a little like people.

If you attend a really interesting, well made presentation regarding resonance frequencies of major bones in the body, by the time the discussion time arrives you don't go 'yeah well I didn't pay attention to anything they said because the guy talking was wearing shorts and a tank top and I don't think that's an appropriate attire for this situation'. That's ridiculous, one can very easily get by the bad presence of a person if they have something really interesting to say... Yet, if the person talking had gone in a well tailored, clean and not attention grabbing suit it would've definitely made the public less distracted by clothes and more focused on the content.

My point is, it's ok to have your high-quality content posted with low-quality grammar *if* you make at least the effort to go through it and try to make it look the best you're capable of. By reading and writing over and over again our work gets little by little more appealing to the eye, but that only comes with hard work. Usually we can't really know exactly how much effort someone puts on an article, that's why our critics should't be too harsh. But often too we see the person behind a material is trying to make it sound right. It shows.

It's all about finding a balance between the music and the lyrics. I don't know what it is, but I know there must be one.

Great post, made me think a lot!

I wish this message could get to everyone in my country. People judge too much base on English language, often times a person maybe downgraded simply because they made one or two grammatical errors.

As a person though am average with written form of English, I have a deficiency in spoken form as I posses what is called calabar accent. Earlier in life? I used to be ashamed when people point out that am from calabar simply by hearing me speak but when I gain my self esteem, I decided to utilize the deficiency by taking a radio drama program at the local radio station and represent my tribe in the program ' area mata'.

As a person who's learning mandarin Chinese, I appreciate how difficult it might be for other who English was not their first language and do not use English proficiency to measure intelligence.

The use of correction plugins is like the use of calculators. As a math teacher right from when I was 15, the use of those things do affect a person cognitive development. Just like you rightly say, its like making a part of your brain feels lazy and underdeveloped.

Finally, I want to encourage anyone who may be struggling in English language. Don't look down on yourself but with every passing day, aim to improve. Thank you @tarazkp, I join Steemit four days ago and I discovered you and and not disappointed with this platform. Keep the good work.

People invent new words because language is made to work for us, not the other way around!

I really think that people place too much emphasis on the acrolect and very high levels of correctness to the detriment of simply getting ideas across. After all, the way we speak in daily life sits on a bell curve, and anything that is more or less in the 80% bump of that curve should be left alone for something like blogging.

I've worked with foreigners, and definitely they're admirable in their attempts to learn our language. Many are polyglots, I myself am semi-fluent in French and Spanish, and am amazed at the Africans who speak not just their own native tongue, but also a few other African languages AND French AND passable English...

Those who nitpick grammar and spelling are often looking to shoot the writer down and are too damn lazy to make a real counter-argument

However I'd like to point out that some of the words from that list, like invulnerable, are far from made up, they're just taken from latin roots. Vulnera = wound, in = negation, able = possibility, so invulnerable on a linguistic level simply means "negated wound possibility".

Others, like bloodstained are thought up on the fly by putting nouns and adjectives together...

As a general rule however, I feel that the creation of new words on the fly is reserved for native speakers of a language. Hobknob is a deep english sense that only a native speaker or very, very fluent foreigner would think up.

So definitely if a foreigner is trying to makeup all sorts of crazy words, we should correct them and help them find English words that already exist.

But you know... I've heard Ivan on Tech make up one or two words, or invent a phrase, and although it sounded a bit strange it worked. But then again his native language is closely related to English, so then there is the issue of calques.

Anyway enough rambling. Good article and let's give the poor ELL's a break!

I have a lot of the same feelings as you on this. As long as the effort of quality is there it usually is great work behind it if you get past minor grammar mistakes. Obviously there is a lot of English on this platform, but sometimes I use google translate to read peoples posts that are in other languages! You find some great content that way.

Agree, but ....I don't know how many articles on Steemit I have clicked because of the great headline and pic, only to find one or two incomprehensible sentences. These posts are spamming out good articles in the feed. It's horrible -- reminds me of what happened in a video game I used to play. Chinese "farmers" invaded the game, selling gold to players and their advertising spammed out the chat to the point it wasn't usable. Thankfully this didn't last long, as it was stopped, but I don't see that happening here.

It is part of the problem here with a decentralised, uncensored platform. you can of course report to #steemcleaners or, stay away from the 'New' page and instead find decent authors through the comments sections of decent posters.

There is a difference between having grammatical errors and just posting garbage. Would much rather someone post something full of errors then nothing at all and much more so then someone posting cut and paste stolen content.

Good reminder to everyone that you need to remember we all come from different walks of life and our education levels aren't equal.

@warpedpoetic ·
You have said it all @tarazkp. You have hit the nail so deep, I bet no one would see it again. As a writer, I detest editing. I was actually kicked out of a discord server for expressing this opinion. It's not that editing is bad in itself but sometimes in a bid to be grammatically correct, the beauty and art in the writing; the turn of phrase, placement of a verb, and so on, disappears and you have a sterile work.
In one of my short stories, I posted here on steemit, I battled with trying to get the poetry part arranged properly but I couldn't. I did all I could but I just didn't know how to use the markdown editor, so there was no way out of it.
After several hours editing and burning bandwidth, I decided to post it like that. I realised in the middle of my editing war that some poems are actually written like that.
In essence, no one has a mastery over language or writing. I have read of so many rules in writing that these days I just write as my spirit leads. There is no right or wrong way to right, there's just good writing, which reaches the intended reader, and bad writing, which doesn't.
In other news, I have been having bandwidth issues so I have not been posting. Peace sire

@wentong-syhhae ·
As a multilingual EFL teacher with 40+ years of experience, I tend to be very forgiving of minor language errors, much more so than some non-native speakers who give their students hell for trivial mistakes (and make them feel insecure about their ability to ever say or write anything in acceptable English). Content is king

What I do not look kindly on is out and out laziness: lack of care for accuracy, unwillingness to use spellcheckers and no desire to reflect upon and correct one's past errors.
