Becoming Hive-Curious
<div class="text-justify">

I know you are curious. Go on - *give it a try.* It won't hurt.

One of the many things in the world of human behavior that perplexes is me is, just how few people are willing to get onto a blockchain, write about their day like they do on other platforms and *potentially* earn some crypto. It really does seem like a no-brainer decision as the only downside is, not earning - just like most don't earn anywhere else on the internet. Sure, not everyone has heard that there is the possibility, but there are many who have and *still* don't even come to check it out.

![slanted Hive_1.png](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/tarazkp/b9JTNLrj-slanted20Hive_1.png)

One can argue the complexity of the system or the problems within the community, but that can't stop people from actually joining, because they wouldn't know about that prior. There are a few less than 1.4 Million accounts on Hive, many of them being alternative and series accounts - why so few?

>Too good to be true?

Yes, I know that not everyone is going to earn much here, but i hear many people talk about gaming for example saying things like "some people earn millions" as if that justifies them spending their with a controller in their hand. But, they could do that same very thing here and while not earn millions - likely earn *something* while doing what they are going to do anyway. Why aren't there more people just streaming their games here?

I have a feeling that for most, they believe that earning anything online is either a scam, or is going to take too much time and effort as in general - most people are not going to earn on any social media just doing what they normally would do each day. That is the same for hive, but far less so than if one was going to attempt to earn on Instagram for example - that takes real work - and those who are earning well have likely put in the hard yards, or got very lucky.

>Win the lottery or nothing?

Maybe people have an all or nothing approach - "the I am going to have the stars or live in the gutter" - there is no in between. I think that many people who play the lottery have this kind of attitude, as while they are hoping to strike it instantly rich, they are not necessarily working consistently toward being there under their own power over time.

For most in the world, the trickle of value that Hive offers is so insignificant in their lives, that it just isn't worth the effort. The time it takes for Hive to "be the next Bitcoin" is far too far (also unrealistic) in the future for most to concern themselves with and because of this, they also aren't likely to discover the direct investment potential.

>Is it too socially risky?

We all know that guy that talks too much about blockchain and crypto, many of us *are that guy* in the real world. But from an investment perspective, what holds many people back is not the volatility in the trading, it is that most people do not want to feel like idiots investing into something that many call a scam or stupid. People like to play socially safe and not look like idiots in front of their friends.

I am pretty sure that for people who have invested into Bitcoin openly over the years, they have friends who have heard on the news at the *massive drop* in price and said, "How's your Bitcoin doing?" Yeah, it is down 400% from the high, but remember that it is up 700,000% from the low - or something like that. It always depends on when you bought, when you sold and - when you bought back.

No one wants to feel like a loser - so most will invest into what others invest into, which means that there is very little chance of significant gain, as the bandwagon is already full. But, *you don't look like an idiot, you seem smart - because all your friends have done the same.*

>Times are changing

A few years ago I wrote a post predicting that in the next large economic downturn, more people would turn to online earning potential to try and close gaps in their incomes lost through layoffs and retrenchments. While I do not think it will be this particular economic downturn that takes Hive mainstream, I do think that there will be significant interest generated in and around the industry that will attract a greater mass of users. Once something has enough mass, it creates its own gravity and socially, that means more and more people start to jump on the bandwagon, and then even more as the rest don't want to miss out. It is at this point that the hockey-sticking of graphs really happen.

What needs to happen in the industry is that somehow and someway, society needs to become Hive-curious and start exploring their options. In a passive world this isn't an easy process, but once people start suffering, they tend to look for an easing of their pain - things are going to get painful for many and hopefully, they start recognizing that the cause of it is the continual giving up of what they own in the quest for convenience and security. Perhaps then, they will get curious enough and ask themselves, "Is there another way?"

There are many reasons why people don't try - but I wonder how many are actually excuses.

I think it'll help for us long-time crypto bloggers to create more invitations for newbies. Not just event or initiatives or contests with prizes, but simple open doors that invite people to participate in areas specific to their interests. It's a way they can move directly into something that resonates.

Just thinking out loud here. Remembering the fact that the Steemit Open Mic was the open door for me. It showed me a certain little space where I could shine a little bit. For our musician friends, many of whom are wondering what to do with their creative energy while in isolation, I think the #openmic will be a warm, welcoming place for them to participate and co-create.

I wouold like to see the "Lite accounts" get introduced that allow for specific needs without full rights. It would get done at the application level for onboarding. The applications and initiatives have to push themsellves out of the blockchain to become external onboarding initiatives. it is where they will thrive.

The state gives society two big rubber bands. The working class rubber band keeps the working class poor, and the wealthy rubber band keeps the wealthy wealthy.
That's why working class people often default to the all-or-nothing of a lotto win and another cask of wine. You've seen it yourself, you just seem to be edging slightly ahead, and then get pulled back down.
The wealthy rubber band though, that keeps you wealthy. Tax loopholes and havens, economies of scale, friends in high places.
Grinding to go from poor to rich is almost impossible. Hence the allure of the lottery; and the reason I won't be cashing out any crypto until I feel that 'wealthy' rubber band around my waist. Then I'll just hire an expensive accountant to make my problems go away.

It's ironic that you mention sling-shotting. I've actually considered quitting full time work, and being completely reliant on the state for everything offline, while pouring everything I have into various blockchains, effectively pulling myself right back on the poor band, to get a quick launch. If I'd done this when I considered it back in 2013, I'd be living behind a servo somewhere, clutching a Nokia 5110 containing the private key to a wallet stuffed full of bitcoin.

Yep. At least they get a free blow-up pillow.

It still too complicated for Mr Facebook. Take it from one who has gone through the pains of onboarding just one person (who has stuck as I persevered with him). If it's not simple, they can't be bothered.

It isn't that complicated to sign up and start posting - most don't even get to the signup part.

It's not to us, but we take this all for granted. Signing in, for instance, using peakd.com. There are FOUR options, and then if you use the wrong key, it doesn't work.

Passwords can be reset anywhere else if you forget them, but not here. Forget it and forget ever logging in again.. then there's the size of them.

Why 4 passwords, and why so massive.. one guy asked me?

This place is alien to outsiders.

Yep, it sounds scammy - but, how many millions do you thinks have been generated over time? Steem was worth 2B at one point and many people cashed out. Gotta count for something.
