<div class="text-justify"> In a couple of weeks, we are *planning* on putting @smallsteps back into the daycare, as we think that it is time to return to normal to some degree, even though - things won't be normal. Having her home has been great in many ways of course and I think that it has helped make her feel comfortable in the new house, but it is also a challenge to get work tasks done, especially for my wife who doesn't have the same flexibility in her work as I "enjoy" - meaning that I can work at night after people go to bed. So far in her near four years on the earth, @smallsteps has been a pretty high-maintenance child - even as far as most children go, as they are all high maintenance. We as parents haven't taken the easy path in her upbringing and I think that now, we are starting to see the fruits of our labor, as she moves from strength to strength and while the foods she can eat is still severely limited, even this is improving at a faster rate. It has taken time and effort to get to this point, but it has been worth it. I think that a lot of her strengths are because we have chosen a far more analogue life for her early years, reading books, drawing, simple toys and a mass of conversation about all things of interest has given her a strong foundation in various areas to the point that she is beyond her years in many respects. It is a funny saying, "beyond their years" and many see this as a negative, that children should be children. However, what that seems to mean is that children should fit into some kind of average mold, a stereotype of a child and one that is driven by the current culture. If that culture creates an average child that doesn't fulfill their childhood potential, that is stunting growth, meaning they are actually "behind their years". While many will disagree with me, I believe that passive consumption of entertainment content stunts childhood (at least) growth and affects skill levels that a person requires to navigate and negotiate in a human world. Perhaps they will have an advantage in a physically isolated digital world, but is that where we want our children to live? Maybe, because that would be much easier for parents to contend with as digital life comes with less scrapes and bruises, as well as the threats of life in this world - like viruses - well, *real* viruses.* I think that when it comes to the differences in behavior between those who consume a lot and those who do a lot, at first glance it might not be so apparent - until you pay attention. Both groups might speak about similar things , but there tends to be one key difference - only one group is speaking from lived experience, the other on hearsay. I think this is apparent online also, where there are plenty of people who "know a lot" but take away Google and they are clueless - *Googless.* Interesting online characters are often just that, characters. Meeting the same person in the walking world might bring one to discover that all of those clever words and funny memes weren't a good indicator of the personality at all, just what the person was able to copy. This goes the same for all of the big talk on this and that also - where most will never even contemplate the same in real life and would quickly back away from the "Let's step outside" scenario. *Digital bravado* is like beer balls on steroids. One of the most boring trends in real-life conversation over the last few years is where people recount what they said to others online - "and then I said, well tweeted, that actually the statistics show.. then I found and linked a random article I didn't read that supported my case... and he couldn't even come back with..." *Shut the fuck up.* The human brain can be very imaginative and has the tendency to confuse what it thinks with what it has experienced, sometimes to the point of delusion. Before it gets to that point where it is clinical though, people get the sense that they *know something* that they have read, without actually having tested their knowledge through experience. With the immersive entertainment we consume, it can make us feel like we have skills that we do not, like watching a documentary on boxing and thinking we can handle ourselves in a fight. Delusions come in many forms and I figure that we all suffer from some level of them, as none of us see reality for what it is, there is always a personal filter applied from what we ourselves experience, believe and prefer - and we can believe and prefer some pretty strange things. While this is part of our creative force, if we get to the point that we are unable to tease apart reality from fiction, we can lead to building a personal narrative that can be quite harmful for ourselves or others. I think that more and more, we are experiencing things through the lens of engineered delivery and without the cross-reference of direct experience, we end up having a highly skewed view of ourselves and the world, one that can make us feel justified in our behaviors, regardless of how damaging they may be. Online, it also tends to lead to people confidently giving advice that they are far from qualified to give, without the cross-reference of personal liability to reign in the overreach - and with the tendency of people to follow advice that best suits their mental framework, the chances of following nonsense is increased. Perhaps this fantasy world of entertainment we have concocted has led us to believe we have more to offer than we actually do, as we think we possess skills we don't actually hold. Skills come through active development or are a side-effect of activity of some kind - very little skill can be developed through passive consumption. It doesn't matter how many galleries you walk through and master pieces you view - it doesn't make you an artist. I wonder, though, how many of us are beyond our years in regards to the societal average, and how many are behind? What are the skill differences of a seven year-old that grew up on a farm and one who grew up coddled in the city? Not just the different kinds of skills, but the maturity of how they approach their daily life. Maturity in many human ways is something that doesn't come with age, it comes through experience. It doesn't matter how many books and articles one reads on any particular subject, if a skill is required to perform a task, it has to be developed in practice. Thinking about it will only get one so far, before the doing has to be brought into the equation - most people don't even think that much these days it seems - as they think they can do what they have never done. The reality is, no one is beyond their years, they are the age they are and hold the skills they have - the judgment of their age based on their perceived skill is just that, a judgment - a biased opinion. The most important job of human on the planet is to brought up their childeren with utmost care considering all ethical values and huminity features. The parents have to give either good human or bad human to the Socitey, depending on the means what they use to their children while bringing up. Analogue means of teaching is the best way to develope the good and healthy characters. Digital means of our era can develope a good robot rather than a good human. The most important factor to brought gargious character is to keep children with parents up to 7 years of age. Especially, mother play a vital role in the mantring, her full time company is a must till the child turns to 7. While, in digital era, there are special institutes to kidnap our children at the age of 3, in the name of education, called nursery, prep, kinder garden etc. This is cruality. The basic 7 years are the actual character of our children.

Personality develops to about 12, most of the brain is built by 3 - it is important for kids to have parents who love and care about them enough to support them in their development, whatever that might be.

It definitely doesn't come with a manual and even if it did, the manual would be very limited in efficacy.

I agree. For the most part I was the only black sheep in a family of nine kids to choose to no use digital paraphernalia as a babysitter, but rather did things to promote growth in other ways. Not too many years back, I packed up the kids and we used a motorhome and home-schooled and saw the entire United States. We saw her events happened instead of reading about them in a book and I can honestly say I think my children have a better understanding of so many things. When we went to see the Alamo in Texas, I was amazed at how small this Giant Legend was. It was like looking at the Mona Lisa for the first time. I really couldn't believe she was that small. Anyway long story short oh, it's a lot more effort, but it is so worth the time. I hope you are having a most wonderful day. !tip

>and I can honestly say I think my children have a better understanding of so many things I reckon that this is because being more part of the experience gives a more rounded knowledge across the senses. I use the analogy of reading about surfing and actually surfing, you can know - but it doesn't mean your body knows. I have been to the Louvre, but not inside. Next time. I don't care much for the Mona Lisa, but there is so much there I would like to explore given the time :)

Well thought out this post and the idea with your daughter is very educational to cultivate values that will last over time, good or bad habits, are difficult to break, so it is better to be safe than sorry. More successes for your family.

There's no replacement for physical experience my friend. Everything else is artificial. People are real fighters behind their machines, but when push comes to shove they run. We had a big "hero" at school as he "knew" everything and looked down on anyone not in his fan club. I challenged him in front of his fan club during a break. Bravely he took off his jacket and loudly proclaimed that he had to warn me 3 times that he had a black belt in Karate. So I waited patiently for him to impress everybody with his martial arts statements. That day he showed his true colors, as one klap from me and he ran. It was not the end of the story, as the next day his father had me in my second home. the Principals office. To please his father the Principle gave me 6 of the best and that was the end. Btw. I like your blessing's tag name @smallsteps. So fitting!

hahah - oh, that story brings back memories. I was on the school oval (about 10 years of age) and a kid wanted to fight me as he had been taking karate - he got into his pose and said go - so I did - and kicked him in the throat and he collapsed to the ground, choking - off to the principle's office.... I missed the cane by a couple years. It is a fitting name for her to be sure and based on the height of her parents, it will likely serve her into adulthood also :D

The analog life you have chosen for her is something I would also love to give my child too. The digital space may make it hard for kids to learn in reality. Drawings, coloring, playing with Toys is a good way to start learning the necessary things. Kind Regards to you and your family

It takes a bit of effort at times as it would be *so much easier* to sit her in front of a screen, but when that becomes the habit, habits are hard to break for child *and* parent.
