Bloat in the Pipeline
<div class="text-justify">

We have had a few issues with our heating system, where air has been getting into the batteries and keeping them from heating effectively. We had someone from the company who installed it here who said some membrane has broken, causing the issue and he replaced it and bled the air from the system. While we have had a few issues, the company itself has been true to its word of " we will fix it until it works properly" so far - which is rare in this day and age.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23zkwAURiasPp5wRKMBhzRetXZesb4TqXeZNf6aobHjEVDe1vbMRUkxEDEaT5qwd7BsKh.png)

With the weather dropping down below -10 now, having a working heating system is important and with the prices of electricity being what they are (and will affect us more as our current contract ends at the end of year), it is even more important to ensure that it is working efficiently as possible.

Unfortunately, the newest nuclear power plant that was meant to be up and running already and would have added much needed capacity to reduce prices, has had *further issues* and won't be up and running until at least February. This project has been plagued with issues for the entire timeline, as it was meant to be operational for over a decade already, but right now is when it would have the greatest impact on supply.

>50% more expensive, 33% less product.

That seems to be about the ratio on the shrinkflation at the moment, where for example, a 150g tube of toothpaste is now a 100g pack. The "argument" is that reducing volume is the only way the companies can survive, but that is nonsense. What they are actually doing is setting up for the future where the prices can decrease, but they will keep the reduced amount of contents, effectively increasing their profits even further. If they only increased the price, there would be a clear comparison that could be made, this way, they get to say "prices are back to normal" when in actual fact, based on volume, they will still be 50% higher.

My mother in law was complaining about the wool for woolen socks and how two balls no longer make a single pair, so she has to buy a third. This is happening with all products and perhaps the companies that do this should be penalized for increasing packaging material for less content and therefore what ends up in landfills. You know, can't have plastic straws, but they can fill the same size packet up with less and claim that it is the only way to survive...

Reducing the volume in packets doesn't help, people still need to eat. It really is a money grab and it is going to be a long-ranging one that will never get reduced again. This is going to be painful for a lot of people, for a very long time.

>No wonder people are stressed.

And, the long-range outlook for the mental health of society isn't looking good. It was sketchy before the pandemic and has only degraded further across all sectors, but now with economic challenges on top, it is going to collapse. It can already be seen in the helpline calls around the world, as well as suicide numbers and attempts. However, it is also being seen in the increase in violence and especially the challenges in younger populations.

>Totally predictable.

It isn't just one thing, there are a *mass of things* that are currently having major impacts on behaviors in society and the more uncertainty there is, the higher the stress becomes and the greater the chance of breakage. A lot of people are *breaking* in various ways and this in turn puts more pressure on an already fragile system, and puts more pressure on those who are already struggling, or are forcing to fall off that psychological cliff that they wouldn't have otherwise.

Much like the heating system in my home, things definitely aren't running efficiently or effectively, unless you look at it from the amount of value being transferred into a small group of pockets. The entire system is currently designed to move *even more* wealth from the poor to the wealthy in a process that is positioned as if it is in our best interest to do so. None of this is in our best interest and the more we support it, the worse off we are going to be.

>But, what choice do we have?

Since we are seemingly incapable of doing anything for ourselves these days and make all of our decisions based on convenience - *not much.*

> *50% more expensive, 33% less product*

Same thing we face in our country all the products are reduced in quantity and increased in price, usually I can make my hair with 4 extension and have a few left but this days I buy 6 extension and it has to be managed, electricity bills are so outrageous that people fight electricity workers whenever they come around, the rich keeps getting richer while the poor gets more poorer it's quite unfortunate.

It's a festive season I still wonder how many poor family in my country can afford to buy rice because the price increased triple times to the normal price likewise tomatoes and vegetables.
We will all survive because God is there for his people.

But do you know why all this are happening and online get worse? Your view πŸ₯Ί

RE: Bloat in the Pipeline
The world is definitely getting to be a harder place. I wonder if the people who were raising us or those before us felt the same way. For all we know this could be the natural progression of things. My hats off to anyone who raises a child these days. It's a totally different world from the one we used to live in.

While people are still having children, I am not sure how many are actually raising them these days. Some of the stories I hear makes me wonder if they have adults around at all.

Hmm, I have so many questions. Is she using the same yarn and brand and checking the label to see if they have changed something. I’d be very surprised if the promised metres in something like 7 veljestΓ€ yarn would have changed.

Yes most grannies are expert sock knitters so that’s why this seems so weird to me. I have not come across a problem like this nor heard about it before. Is it a recurring thing of one off? A mistake on the manufacturers part? There is always an approximate meters on the label and now I want to measure that and compare it to an old skein.

RE: Bloat in the Pipeline
There isn't much you can do when companies are willing to increase prices but not really cut prices down. They would rather cut down how much you get and I hate how it reacts. I have also heard of shelf-flation during the pandemic but I haven't heard about it since. Back when the supply chain wasn't the greatest, I heard about some products have a wrong expiration date (by a few days) but I haven't heard about it since.

Personally, as far as possible, I always prefer to choose quality over convenience, also because in my view, quality is always more convenient in its own way. The company that takes care of your heating is really a rare commodity, we are dying of cold at home, we have heating and solar panels to activate, the company has already come twice and has not solved it and it seems they don't care much that you are freezing to death πŸ˜”

Our system is quite powerful, 15 kW, then we have three storage batteries that make a total of 45 kW. In this period they recharge easily and we go on all day and night without the need to resort to the network. In kw I can't tell you, the average in a year yields around 2000 euros of profit for the current sold.

>But, what choice do we have?

While I agree there is not too much we can do with food, there is quite an easy thing many people can do to try to reduce the price increase impact on their monthly expenses. This weekend I was watching the new [The Minimalist](https://theminimalists.com/) documentary on Netflix called [Less is Now](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn-xbOCZOiQ), I encourage everyone to watch it and take action, it is a lesson we all can learn from which will save us money and make us happier.

I wonder how minimal it need go and I also wonder, if this is another way to get us accustomed to getting less for more. Minimalism is good for sure, but I am a skeptic as to whether it should be this way.

Shrinkflation is everywhere. Toilet paper too! 🀣

Once the manufacturer shrink the content to a point while keeping the packaging bloated, at some point a JUMBO version will be introduced to normalize the quantity again at a higher price.

Apple removing the charger is another, at the same time boosting the profit. With the iPhone boxes now smaller without the charger, each freight can carry more iPhones. (In all fairness I don’t even use the chargers that came with the phone)

Its an interesting thought to think about that while everything is getting more noticeably expensive the products are also shrinking. More to pay and less to get.... and what choice do we have... hmmm...

Maybe this is a good thing. Sure for consumers like us right now we did get a lot more for our buck in the past. However sometimes I do think when I see everything chips, drinks, pens, paper.... every label has "extra", "20% more", "big gulp"... it makes me think are we consuming too much than what we should? Wouldn't this type of marketing actually create more waste for our environment?

Maybe its time we reconsider what it means to slim down and maximize compact of our lifestyle.

Its always hard to go small when we are used to having so big... but funny its not that hard the other way. Great article which makes me think at the moment.

I would say that in some places (like the US), shrinkflarion is like a good thing in many cases, where supersize is the norm. In Finland and likely many countries, this isn't the case.

US is by far the largest consumer per capita, so it would be interesting to get numbers on the change in packaging waste either way.

Ahhh Finland! Yes US the sizes I experience to be honest is just wasteful and too much. and by looking at how things are moving I am pretty sure people will start flipping because they got 5% less.

"Shrinkflarion" is needed in the US. for the better. however for other nations.... being more compact than already compact doesn't work.
