Breaking Eggs
<div class="text-justify">

Family visited tonight. A young couple who live overseas that we don't see often enough and only get to spend a few hours each year together. However, an interesting story came up today as the guy recently found out that he has a lost (unknown) uncle. After *forty five* years and after his grandmother recently passed, his grandfather announced that he has another son. Based on the type of life the grandfather has led,

> This news was unexpected.

---

> But not unwelcomed.

In fact, rather than make a fuss about it much at all, the family has reached out and met, spent time together and are getting to know each other. And the guy (who lives out of country) will meet his uncle next week for the first time, and is looking forward to it. It is pretty awesome in my opinion.

The grandfather who is in his eighties has held this secret for over half his life, doing what he thought was the right thing to do for his wife and family. However, after his wife's passing, someone who cared for daily for 25 years after she had a stroke, he has been able to get over whatever shame and guilt he felt and open up.

Many people have a lot of judgement and take various high-horse moral positions in these kinds of cases, having an opinion about what is right and wrong, what should have been done, and how people should have behaved, and should behave going forward. There is lots of *right and wrong* statements and "What I would do..." statements.

> What people forget is...

Life is messy at times and things can get complicated. Sure, we can and will judge others, but we have never walked in their shoes, we do not have their experiences, and we have very little insight into the situations before, during and after. We are human and will judge, but we should also assume that no matter our opinion, that is all it is - opinion. We might feel correct, but that doesn't make us right.

A lot of people are looking for an easy life. A simple life. Yet it seems that no matter how simple we try to make it, we are going to constantly find ourselves in imperfect situations. It seems a lot of people are looking to lead a comfortable life, without really thinking about whether a comfortable life is actually living. Avoiding the mess by living below our potential, playing safe to avoid risk, and limiting our chances of being hurt, may not be much of a life. Yet, that seems to be the aim for many.

> No one wants to break eggs.

I believe we make life far more complicated than it needs to be, because rather than acting open and honestly, admitting our faults and apologising for our mistakes, we try to save face by attempting to live up to the expectations of others, of society and culture, and fit in. We try to live lives that are *not our own* and live in secret shame of when we have failed in the eyes of others. We all carry secrets.

>“In every man's memory there are things he won't reveal to others, except, perhaps, to his friends. And there are things he won't reveal even to friends, only, perhaps, to himself, and there, too, in secret. And finally, there are things he is afraid to reveal even to himself, and every decent man has quite an accumulation of them. In fact, the more decent the man, the more of them he has stored up.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground

What does "decent" mean?

>Decent
/ˈdiːsnt/
adjective
>1. conforming with generally accepted standards of respectable or moral behaviour.
"a decent clean-living individual"
>2. of an acceptable standard; satisfactory.

Do not break eggs. *Conform.*

Never thought about the definition of "decent". I'll use that more precisely now, thank you!

Personally, I'm for "breaking eggs". Being honest to myself and others is very important to me, and the side effects are usually favorable. Those who break away after seeing the mess I made, well, good riddance. Because I'd rather stick with those who stay at my side while I clean up the mess, as that will help me not to repeat.

It builds trust. Knowing someone will admit their mistakes makes it so much easier to deal with them, that includes being honest with them, which then can inspire reciprocal honesty.

But it does break things. And the more comfortable one gets in their situation, the harder it becomes to break that comfort.

My girlfriend has many unknown aunts and uncles. One of her grandfathers was quite active that way. They were never recognized, but after the shock of the first two or three, each new one popping up is now welcomed.

Himmler was a "decent chap" in a community of Nazis.

>Those who break away after seeing the mess I made, well, good riddance.

They wouldn't have been there long anyway.

>But it does break things. And the more comfortable one gets in their situation, the harder it becomes to break that comfort.

This is what it comes down to, right? People want to stay comfortable, even if it is actually a place of discomfort.

It must be weird to have random people join the family, but also super interesting!

I've been hearing a lot of stories like this lately. It's like everyone decided to get DNA tested and then all these dirty little secrets came out of the woodwork. I actually know a family who is probably irreparably damaged because of something like this happening. It's sad.

What a heartwarming story @tarazkp! Imagine your friend's grandfather living with this secret for so many years, what a lovely reaction from his family. They have a lot of catching up to do!
My Mom was the oldest and in her teens learnt that her Dad was not her biological father. Mom lived to 90, longed to make contact with her real father or even just have a photo of him, but it was the days of 'sweeping things under the carpet' so her wish was never granted.

>Imagine your friend's grandfather living with this secret for so many years, what a lovely reaction from his family.

He had a lot of guilt and shame I suspect, both in the keeping the secret and in the not getting to know. He would keep tabs when he could. I imagine it is a bit like those nineteen fifties gay men who lived a straight life.

>but it was the days of 'sweeping things under the carpet' so her wish was never granted.

I think this would have been common. Many would have suspected, but had no way of verifying suspicions. It means that many might have felt they "didn't know themselves" that well. sad.

Life can be pretty chaotic, and everyone's path is shaped differently by their own situations. It's so easy for us to chill in our cozy bubbles, throwing out opinions on what others should do without really thinking about the depth of their experiences.

Having not yet reached half a century of existence, I think I still have some way to go before I begin to accept the mistakes I've made throughout my life. As you said, I'm not proud of having made them, but I know that those broken eggs won't stop counting just because I didn't want to break them. They'll never be whole eggs again. You have to see life through the eyes of a human being. And as humans, we have to fight against our limitations and our terrible habit of seeing a tiny splinter in someone else's eye and not being able to see a beam in our own... Something more or less like this appears in a passage from the Bible (Luke 6:42), not that I'm “evangelizing” here, but just because I remember this passage in particular from my Sunday school...

Whether it be a speck or a log, the difference might be only of degrees. Can we really judge others because their mistakes are bigger than our own?

As you said, those eggs can't be unbroken. But I also think that dealing with the mess is part of being human. We aren't made to live sterile, risk-free lives. We learn by trial and error.

> Can we really judge others because their mistakes are bigger than our own?

The true law for me, is that we can't judge no one. We are equals. Only institutions can provide humans a true value for judging other accordingly with the rules that are preset for everyone.

>We aren't made to live sterile, risk-free lives.

This is most joyful part of being alive, for me. For sure, be absolutely in control (or being controlled by other(s)) would be for me the worst part of being alive. Living, for me, is all about taking choices, risks, making mistakes, and having the possibility of correcting some of them, or at least learn with them, and have the opportunity of not making them again.
