<div class="text-justify"> For Christmas, my wife bought us tickets to see Ricky Gervais in Copenhagen for a combined Christmas and birthday present, as it was a March performance. I was excited, especially since we hadn't travelled together since before Smallsteps was born. However, this was Christmas 2019 and as we know, by March 2020, no one was travelling anywhere. The performance was rescheduled several times but in the end, we weren't able to go and had to give the tickets away. We found out however, that Gervais is coming to Helsinki in March next year, which would be a perfect domestic trip for my birthday. Because several of my friends and colleagues know that we missed the last concert, they have been messaging me to make sure that I know about this one - which is fantastic service. And we were all keen to grab the tickets that go on sale in a day or two, until my wife realized that her friend's 40th birthday will be on the same night in a different city. Normally, this would be one of those "we can skip" kinds of things, but this particular friend is suffering from late-stage cancer that has metastasized, making it likely the last birthday she will have, so skipping isn't an option. All of this negative is wearing me down and I think that I will have to plan something to "look forward to" before I spiral down with it. I also guess that I am not the only one feeling this pressure globally at the moment, as it seems that no matter which way people turn, there is just more shit to face, with little respite in sight. It is no wonder that so many are burying themselves into distraction activities of all make and model. But, while the relief from distraction is welcomed, I feel that it is going to lead into a steeper spiral and leave many people with less ability to climb out of it, once things do start to turn for the better. It feels more like an increasing debt model, where the deeper it gets, the longer the recovery is going to be, meaning the longer it takes to be able to start benefiting from the "good times" again. And, I don't think the comparisons to the relative misery of others is useful either, because it might make us less likely to do what we need to do to take care of ourselves, because *at least we aren't as bad as...* even though it might help us feel a bit better in our current circumstances. But at the same time, maybe the *illusion* is useful, where we can at least feel there is some hope on the horizon to keep on going, rather than wallow in the despair of inevitability. At least at the moment, I feel that I could do with a little something other than the reality of the current situation, though I am still in two minds as to whether that would be better for me, or just make matters worse, kicking the can down the road. *Mental health* seems to be an issue for many currently and I believe that our abilities to deal with stress and uncertainty has degraded heavily over the last decade or two. What is interesting in my opinion, during that time we have had a pretty stable society and it is only in the last two or three years where there has been major negatives happening, where things like the pandemic, war and the failing economy are making an impact. This is likely to amplify that degradation over the years and compound to have an even greater impact, whish will result in all kinds of social issues, like increasing violence, drug usage and family and childhood problems. But, I think that one of the things that I have noticed in the last few months is how many people are making what I would consider rash decisions that are very hard to reverse once made. Things like quitting their job or, making expensive purchases on debt. What I think is happening is that while under stress, our ability to think critically as well as our ability to control our impulses are impaired and as such, we make these decisions in the heat of the moment, and will only come to regret them once our head and heart has cooled down a bit - but by then, it is likely too late, the damage has already been done. There is a balance point in there somewhere however, where we should be trying to find the point where we are able to self-care, but also not overweigh it to the point that our care activities will end up harming us more later, than the good they will do us now. It isn't an easy equilibrium to find, especially when we are already struggling, as we will naturally overcompensate and then, overcompensate again. I have been talking to a lot of people about these things lately and what I have found is that even the most stable amongst us, seem to have cracks appear in their experience, feeling the pressure, even if it is not on them directly. And, I think that it is important to note that even if we as individuals are doing okay, we are also impacted by those around us too, our friends and family, our colleagues and of course, all the media we consume. And, I think that the increasing social disconnection has also left a lot of us feeling isolated, with the sense that we have nowhere to turn, no one to share our concerns with. I don't know where it is going to lead, but perhaps this period in our history might be a turning point, where we will realize that we are indeed stronger together and we will start to reverse the isolation. Or perhaps, there will be so much breakage and failure that we will further destroy the bonds that keep us together and isolate us even further from each other. It is hard to say, but we are also likely just at the start of the "gonna get worse before it gets better" phase, so we are each going to have to come to terms with the conditions we have and workout how we are going to make it through, until the better begins. >I don't know where it is going to lead, but perhaps this period in our history might be a turning point, where we will realize that we are indeed stronger together and we will start to reverse the isolation. I hope this comes true. There are forces though that want division and strife. It sells more than peace and love. When you can divide people and fit them into neat categories you can market bullshit to them. I hope people stop being puppets and take care of their mental health. I'm really sorry for your wife's friend. 40 is too young for that. >It is hard to say, but we are also likely just at the start of the "gonna get worse before it gets better" phase, so we are each going to have to come to terms with the conditions we have and workout how we are going to make it through, until the better begins. I put The End of The World is Just The Beginning by Peter Zeihan on my reading list. My posts are about to get more hopeful or really dark.

Stress and more shit followed by more stress and shit is getting rather stale lol. I just can't believe what a mess the world is in and it is all self inflicted by idiots. We are having floods here so the areas affected are not having a break and are just getting another boot when you are down. Ricky will keep on touring so I am sure you will catch him live soon enough. I think we all need a break from this as the mind can only take so much.

You touch a lot of critical topics here for the world's current status. I've observed and studied the situation both in my country and globally with great care. The pressure's felt everywhere, but I don't think it's something new, more like we're experiencing a more tangible version of something that has been taking place in the background for decades, even centuries. Essentially, what I think is happening is that the narratives that have kept the shape of our civilization and the order of our societies (meaning institutions, economies, countries, etc) are losing power and revealing their falsehood, so we're collectively facing internal realities that were always active but not obvious. I also think that all of humanity will profit greatly from this experience, that we'll indeed find the true worth of togetherness and begin to thrive. The process may take a long time, but it'll be ultimately for the best.

>And, I think that it is important to note that even if we as individuals are doing okay, we are also impacted by those around us too, our friends and family, our colleagues and of course, all the media we consume. There is not the slightest objection to what you said above, sir. Even in the developmental psychology section, it is stated that influence (both influencing and being influenced) is a driving force that can lead a person to a certain point in his life. Friends, family, and colleagues are people who tend to be positive influences. How many people are successful because of the positive influence of the people around them, or are there also many people who fall but are able to get back up because of their positive influence too? (People who know each other well always support each other to get something good, right?) But the media content we consume is another matter. The influence of the media is completely at our fingertips and within our control. Only we ourselves can control the consumption and influence of the media, which has led us to this point in time. Either fail or succeed. Everyone has the potential to be at the lowest point in their life (even if it looks fine). Just as everyone also has the potential to be at their best, everyone wants to be at their best, and that can be achieved if all positive influences can be empowered and negative influences can be minimized. May all goodness always be with you.

>How many people are successful because of the positive influence of the people around them, or are there also many people who fall but are able to get back up because of their positive influence too? And how many fail because they don't have the right people around them? I think that over the last years where the social connections have eroded, people are surrounding themselves with what doesn't necessarily support them to be their best and instead, hinders the attempts.

can I suggest you something? do a quick trip in UK and see it when you have free time. there are plenty of choices in here: https://www.viagogo.co.uk/Theatre-Tickets/Comedy/Ricky-Gervais-Tickets?AffiliateID=49&adposition=&PCID=PSGBGOOARTRICKY52CAC5B428&AdID=620762281876&MetroRegionID=&psc=%2c&ps=%2c&ps_p=0&ps_c=8609856386&ps_ag=85658242974&ps_tg=kwd-297638433115&ps_ad=620762281876&ps_adp=%2c&ps_fi=%2c&ps_li=%2c&ps_lp=9046206&ps_n=g&ps_d=c&gclid=CjwKCAiAheacBhB8EiwAItVO298HlM_UvmfF3di9fTemFUbK15W4wk3sROEO53ZuMPj3jF6PAaywZBoCHbUQAvD_BwE and the flight will be probably cheaper than the expenses to go to the airport. I was just told many times that I need to learn how to block time for myself too. I can tell you that this is a nice thing to do.

Why not treat yourselves to a couple of days in York in January to see him. Its a beautiful city and the break might do you both the world of good :-) Whilst your wife's friend's situation is tragic, it could also be a reminder that there is ALWAYS someone worse off than ourselves. >I think that one of the things that I have noticed in the last few months is how many people are making what I would consider rash decisions that are very hard to reverse once made. Perhaps a pragmatist might say this, but perhaps the recent events have made people more aware of their need to really live their lives after said events have demonstrated how fickle life is and how easily it can tip upside down. What did Eckhart Tolle discuss? Oh yes, the power of NOW! The road to heaven is trodden by weary rich men laden with regret, fella. Please don't be that man.

Would love to, but will be in Lisbon for work and my wife will have no time off until the summer. >Whilst your wife's friend's situation is tragic, it could also be a reminder that there is ALWAYS someone worse off than ourselves. I have never found this useful for myself, though I do get the attraction of the comparison. I see each of our experiences as unique and therefore, we are the only one that can live them, making the comparison difficult. I don't think that people are actually making decisions for a better experience in life, nor decisions that are for the now. I really think people are buying more into an illusion than anything else - the consumer path to happiness, which soon leads to degraded experience.

Well, you know, I think that in life it's always a case of comparing yourself to those who are better off and aiming for that rather than looking at those who are worse off and comforting yourself; this is for the ambitious and of course in my opinion. I believe that balance is always something precarious unfortunately, not easy to maintain even for the "strongest" people if we can use this term. Surely the weather isn't good, I generally try to see this as an opportunity to develop myself and when things go better to be already ahead. I agree that perhaps one day we will understand that the human race can do much more if we do it together, but unfortunately it hasn't really gotten there yet. Nice post as always, brings many reflections and thoughts; thanks for sharing!🤗

Control the controllable, and start with yourself and your perspectives, and pay it forward. What people need now is hope and positive energy. Perhaps most should turn off TV and propaganda news. 😉

> And, I don't think the comparisons to the relative misery of others is useful either, because it might make us less likely to do what we need to do to take care of ourselves... Comparing one's unfortunate circumstance with that of others or comparing one's fortune with others', I dunno which is worse or makes one feel better or hopeful. Maybe both have the effect they need to have depending on the situation at hand so in making them, I think we just need to be prudent and flexible. It's not entirely useless really, it helps to some extent. I'm sure you'll be fine no matter what. Godspeed.

Taking things on credit is not good. I bought an iPhone for my wife in 2021 for $1350 and paid right away. In the same year, I bought myself an iPhone for $700 in installments for 2 years. This year it was very unpleasant for me to pay $40 a month for installments.

I think people have lost some of their mental health for more than two years, particularly because of lockdowns. I have observed some strange behaviours from people, like getting quickly angry more than ever. What I have also noticed that we have got used to lazyness and being alone.

>I have observed some strange behaviours from people, like getting quickly angry more than ever. I notice it in myself too, though there is also the stroke during that time that has compounded the issue somewhat. I think that a lot of the violence and disruption currently is being caused by the very poor handling of Corona.
