<div class="text-justify"> No matter how simple something gets, there is always someone simpler. Steem definitely needs some layers of simplification, but all need to remember that there will always be people who are resistant to change and unwilling to put in the effort to learn something new. Once habits are created, they can be difficult to shake and without an openness to explore what is new, tradition sets in and not much changes. There is a reason they say, *you can't teach an old dog new tricks.* But, I am not sure if that is true, or just an acceptable excuse for those set in their ways to not have to change. I know some "old dogs" and what is the predictor of their ability to change is their attitude to change. Rather than resist a shift, some of them embrace the opportunity to learn something new, to become a part of the changing world, instead of being relegated into irrelevancy. Of course, we all will suffer the slings and arrows of aging with a slowing of body and mind, as well as the will to keep pushing energy into becoming something else, to keep evolving. But, slowing and stopping are quite different things. I remember the last piece of work that my grandad carved and finished, a grandmother clock. He was recovering from a fall that broke his neck and he was in a brace. He was 86 years of age. It was one of the last things he ever really did, as past that point with the loss of mobility, he had to give up driving and give up teaching woodwork classes at the adult college. He wasn't a professional woodworker, it was a hobby - but like all of the hobbies he turned his hand to - he was better than most. Without stimulus and action, quickly, his mind went and the person I knew was gone forever. I remember him working inside rather than in his shed, carving the intricate pieces that would fit perfectly together to house the glass and pendulum, and I remember the pain on his face as he pushed his chisel and in his eyes as he knew what was to come. Something that had been a smooth action for near on 70 years, was labored and he struggled, but he forced himself to adjust for the injuries and accomplish what he set out to do - while facing his own mortality. How many would or could do the same today? It is funny. I just realized that my grandfather on my mother's side worked until he could work no more at the age of 86, and my father worked until he had a stroke and couldn't stand and paint in front of the class at the age of 82. He is in a home now and he has many more bad days than good - he likely doesn't know who I am. I do not think I am going to reach anywhere near their ages, but I can't imagine what I would do if I wasn't working at or toward something. Yet, the world is changing, as it always does. And to be a part of the working population means to be able to change with it, adapt to the new developments, participate in the direction of the next iteration. This requires learning, a movement of knowledge that changes mind and body - yet it seems, people like their status quo, their comfort zones. It is no wonder why so many of us age so fast, as our brain stops functioning, it works on automatic pilot and when it meets resistance, it looks to avoid change, push back against it in a losing game of trying to maintain relevance, whilst the world makes us obsolete. These days, we look to entertain the mind without introducing new, we bury ourselves in the familiar and believe that we are supporting our growth, deepening our skill, without realizing we have narrowed our vision and the changing world moves past without our notice. Only when we look up do we see how far it has gone, how little we have followed and how small our chance is to catch up. Stay ahead of the curve, or drop off the back of the pack. It is natural of course that this happens, that generations are replaced by the more advanced and for two million years it has happened that on average, those who follow outperform those who went before. How much better the leaders of the future are going to be depends on the foundation left them, and if in disrepair, they have to spend resources on fixing rather than forging new paths. People seem to think that we are here to procreate and replicate, but this is not the way we have evolved as a species. We have evolved to evolve and we have a very high capacity to direct ourselves and affect our world. It is .simple isn't it? The meaning of life? Well it is for me - Work at improving the foundation so that those to come can build a better life. Maybe I am just too old to change, irrelevant in a world that looks to consume now, no matter the cost to those who come later. I wonder which will be the last generation to survive til the end of our evolution. It will be their problem to face, but unlikely a problem of their own creation. We carve their foundation with every decision we make. *The clock is ticking.* Taraz [ a Steem original ] </div><center> [](https://steemonboarding.com/)</center>

I think we human tend to attribute our failure to some unpalatable experience we have encounter in the past so instead of finding way to improve during our dealing activities. We only indulge in self pity which in reality won't help at all.

Yes, and then there is the growing potential for extinction through social conflict, something that is new to our species. Nuclear power changes everything.

To complete the same task, he had to fundamentally change the way he worked due to the loss of mobility in his body. Same result, different method. His results didn't need to change, they were already good enough.

Hmm, but then... what you are saying now, in this comment, totally contradicts the **essence** of the message of the three first paragraphs in this article. Since what I understood by **change,** was 'change' of path, behavior, paradigms, activities and actions far away from what one has been doing previously in the past. Well, that was what I understood at least. Even after reading your article thoroughly until the end. But yeah, you know pretty well english is not my mother tongue. ;)

I've taught old dogs new tricks XD (some of them were even actual dogs) > These days, we look to entertain the mind without introducing new, we bury ourselves in the familiar and believe that we are supporting our growth, deepening our skill, without realizing we have narrowed our vision and the changing world moves past without our notice Some of us get bored, and then we do/make stuff, and sometimes that's trouble >_>

I agree with many of your thoughts on aging and why we are here. I am not a Buddhist, but really like the Buddhist concept that out of the millions of organisms on the earth we were born one that is capable of movement, critical thinking and affecting the world around us in ways unimaginable for millions of species on the earth. Our species possesses talents, skills and advantages so far above plants, insects and animals. The Buddhist believe being born human is a huge gift. After all we could have been a fungus or a tree. So I agree that we are so special and we have great gifts. Second I really believe that when we lose purpose, when we stop learning or teaching, our minds whither and atrophy until we are mere reminants of ourselves. I think we should work at something we are passionate about until we die.

>Second I really believe that when we lose purpose, when we stop learning or teaching, our minds whither and atrophy until we are mere reminants of ourselves. And I think the degradation is faster than many people believe. They think it happens when getting old, but I know middle-aged people who lost their minds long ago. > I think we should work at something we are passionate about until we die. Something, many things, everything.

> And I think the degradation is faster than many people believe. They think it happens when getting old, but I know middle-aged people who lost their minds long ago. I laughed when I read this because I listened to a neuroscience presentation once which postulated this exact concept. The neuroscientist studied people who had done the same job for five or more years and then studied people who were new to the same job. They scanned their brain activity using some sophisticated imaging technology and they found the new people making many more connections between different parts of their brains then the group of people who had done the job more then five years. They then did multiple cognitive function tests on the two groups. They concluded from the interviews and scans that the new employee group was learning and thinking about the job task, but in contrast the experienced group was just remembering what to do, not thinking about it. They also found evidence of cognitive decline in the group which remembered what to do and evidence of normal or above normal cognitive skills in the group of younger and more inexperienced workers. The researchers were reluctant to draw firm conclusions but stated that there is a growing body of evidence that we suffer from cognitive decline at an earlier age then popularly thought due a lack of active learning. We get in a rut, eat the same foods, wear the same clothes, drive the same route to work, do the same job, go home and do it all again the next day. Apparently remembering what to do isnβt enough to keep our brains sharp, we need to exercise our brains to keep them sharp. Imagine that π€£π

What a delightful read. I just finished reading this aloud so that #farm-mom could also enjoy. With being retired comes a whole new set of circumstances. The biggest change has been the amount of time we have to spend doing whatever we please. When I finally decided that time was more important than $$$$$$$$, retirement ensued. So many of my friends asked me what I was going to do with all of my time. My reply was, What ever the f--k I want. I'm busier now than ever before, and I wonder if there will be enough time to do everything I want. Having many hobbies going into retirement, wondering what I would do with my time was never an issue. Having time has allowed me to delve deeper into what I enjoy, and learning all of the idiosyncrasies to mastering a skill set keeps the mind sharp. One should never stop learning. You talk about learning, and keeping the mind sharp, what an adventure it has been here on Steemit. I have to laugh at myself when I look back at when I first started here on Steemit. It has been almost two years since my first post and I have learned so much, with so much more to learn. This old dog loves a challenge, and the challenge at this point in my life is to live every day to its fullest and continue to nurture the mind Very inspiring article @tarazkp
