<div class="text-justify"> When we are going through difficult times, it is easy to feel that we are the only ones in the world suffering. It doesn't really matter what it is, whether it be a personal ailment, challenges with family, work, or a million other aspects - when it is *happening to us,* we might feel alone. And often it seems, that entitlement starts to set in at this point also, where help from others is expected, that it is a natural right, and if that help doesn't come, it is because those people are uncompassionate, uncaring, cruel. > Is that the case? Highly unlikely. However, especially with online requests for assistance, those who have helped have likely been burned multiple times in the past and they know, there is a high probability that any request they receive, is not what it is portrayed to be. As a result, I think that like me, a lot of people have become very cynical and skeptical of providing online assistance, and are preferring to help people directly instead. Maybe, they have become cynical enough to not help anyone at all. > Ask and you shall receive? We seem to have created such terrible local systems through governments and communities, that individuals people turn to get help from strangers. And while I get that when someone has an acute issue with no personal way to solve it, it feels like that is the only thing to do, but it just isn't sustainable. Because what ends up happening is that those who want to help try, but they are also the ones who are going to be burned too often for doing so, which makes them a cautionary tale for others. Not only that, it also means that those who prepare themselves for the worst, become targets of those who haven't. Obviously, there are lots of various complexities that come into play in this discussion, but it is good to note that most humans don't tend not to be prepared, until they are in need. There is the practical side of this, like people who don't look to manage stress until they they are already stressed. But there is also the social side of this, where people aren't interested in building relationships with people, until they want something from the other person. > Should we be asking for help from strangers? I think this is an interesting question these days, because "stranger" might have changed definition in some way in the digital world. However, what people should be very careful of in the digital sphere, is that for the most part, people are strangers, because other than some zeroes and ones, there are no other ties. This is quite different to the relationships of families and friends, and even the inhabitants of a city. When there are physical ties of some sort, there is also an "in it together" quality that comes with it. That is not present for the most part in the digital forums. That is not to say that they can't be built, but the relationships are built in different ways and over time, where track record of the relationship matters, so do other ties to other relationships in the ecosystem. There is still a social network of trust in play, but it isn't the social network platform that provides this. A community isn't just a collection of people randomly gathered together, it is a group of people who interact and also work together, often adding value to each other. Many people believe that they should get help from others, without considering what value they have been bringing to those they are asking from, nor what value they will add. What is the trade? the "good feeling of helping" is one aspect, but I know that the good feeling quickly dissolves away when finding out personal charity was taken advantage of. And, in time what happens is that the good feeling of helping never arrives, because of losing it so many times earlier. It can be argued that the good feeling of helping should be enough and once the money has changed hands, it is up to the receiver to do as they please. However, because online there are so many people asking for help, plus there are also people in the physical world with real social ties who also need help, there is very little need to help strangers. So, what makes people believe that their needs are more important than the needs of others? As said at the start, *it is easy to feel that we are the only ones in the world suffering* when we are in need. And, this is part of the problem with asking for help from strangers, because they haven't thought about the lives and needs of others, including those they are asking for help. It goes to show something about their own processes, where only when they are in need, will they connect. Or at the very least, this is how it seems to me, one of the *strangers they are asking for help.* One of the challenges I see in the way we are headed, is that we are constantly looking at acute problems and dealing with them, rather than building systems that can support at scale. One of the problems with mass social media is that while there might be hundreds of millions on a single platform, they don't actually scale to build a community of them all. Communities are small, intimate, and there are ties that mean that there is incentive to help each other, because winning and losing are both shared outcomes. And as much as things are failing in society, >Charity doesn't scale. It doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't help people in need, but we also have to work toward building a better system, and part of that is identifying what is required in order to get help. Most people agree there should be some kind of meritocracy in work, so what merits are required to receive help? Is want enough? Worth exploring. Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div>

We cannot pretend to help others when we are fighting a battle in our own work and family environment. It's like advising our neighbour not to do this or that and we do it all the time, we would be hypocrites, wouldn't we? I don't know if you know the term ‘FOMO’ (fear of missing out), well, it's a psychological disorder related to social networks that causes a generalised fear of missing out on what others are doing. This fear can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and frustration. The extreme case of this phobia is exacerbated when the user feels extreme, irrational fear or anxiety about not being in contact via the mobile phone or any screen that gives access to social networks. Yes, you will say, and what the hell does all this have to do with the content of your publication? Well, a lot, from my humble rational point of view. We become sceptical and distrustful. You ask a stranger in the street for directions, and instead of pointing you in the right direction, he sends you five blocks in the opposite direction. This is the basis of misinformation, I think I know and in the end ‘I don't know anything’. Many, many years ago, I worked in a Microsoft Call Center, where we dealt with some problems that Windows users presented. I in particular, because of my photographic memory, was able to respond positively to the request, other operators resorted to the manual provided on the screen and commented to the user on line what the manual said, without getting it right... This is why the online customer service rating was devised, and Microsoft paid substantially to the operator who had a positive user rating. **Would you ask a stranger for help? The answer is a resounding ‘YES’.** And I would also offer my help to anyone who asked for it, after assessing whether I am capable of being effective, and if not, I would look for someone qualified to provide the help required. As usual, I have gone on long and hard in one comment…

Do you know anyone in crypto who doesn't know what FOMO means? Asking for directions face to face, is very different to digital advice. I wouldn't get medical opinions from someone who claims to be a specialist online, but I would if I was sitting in their office. There is a difference. >Would you ask a stranger for help? Only if I was in desperate need, and not over the internet. Real life only. I have met many of the people I interact with here, or have been interacting with them for years already. These people I would help easily if they asked. Random people asking me in Discord for money, it is a different matter. I am far more wary.

Well, I am this person who finds it very hard to tell people to help me. I don’t have it all but I’m someone who knows how to manage my life that even though I am very sad or facing difficult times, I usually know how to manage my life in such a way that I will still be able to live with what I’m going through I’ve faced difficult times which made me think life generally is against me. That’s a normal thing

I've become a bit cynical about the whole crowd sourcing of charity lately. It seems like anytime something remotely unfortunate happens to some one they are starting a go fund me page for it. I think go fund me is brilliant in that you can have lots of people give small amounts to add up to a lot, but people should have insurance and things like that. Although I agree a lot of insurance is a scam, I don't think just relying on crowd sourced charity is the answer.

> people aren't interested in building relationships with people, until they want something from the other person. Agreed, this tit-for-tat expectation is ruining modern relationships. What solves this is developing local communities! I've got different communities for different situations. Whether it's Splinterlands, Chelsea Football, teaching, raving, investing, or something else, I've been working on my social network to make sure I keep up relationships with friends in a variety of realms, in person and online.

Is the lack of charity partially a consequence of the secularization of society? For example, here in the US anyway, a lot of hospitals were founded by religious organizations, but over the past century, the bureaucratization of healthcare through insurance and government systems has disconnected service from community and hidden it behind a concrete wall and faceless functionaries.

I think that this has something to do with it for sure. I also think that profit-first model is also a big part of it. People are looking for meaning in their lives, for relevance, for community, for intimacy, for love etc - but they want it on their terms, which means they are never uncomfortable, never without, get to do what they want without consequence. Humans are disconnected from humans, because many live with unrealistic expectations on the way things ought to be.

Hello, I felt motivated to leave some very personal thoughts on charity. When one does an act of charity, one does not proclaim it to the four winds. When I see someone bragging about his charitable activities, I doubt his true value and I understand that there is a motivation behind it that is not to help the person in need, but rather to be noticeable to others. It is like buying attention. I see it as quite wrong. In the same way (I mean wrong) I see those who ask for money through the Internet to strangers, just because maybe they think or have evidence (here in Hive everything is public) that this person has a lot of money, which is relative, because each person has their own definition of what is a lot or little money, according to their reality. I think that charity is something very intimate to everyone. You decide if and how you want to help someone or a cause because you feel it in your heart. Perhaps I have gone a bit off topic. 😉

I think those hit with natural disasters and fire receive help the quickest. Maybe it's because people can imagine the horror of it, and how it can happen to them. For those individuals that are sick, people are hesitant to help because they might need it for themselves. I think perception plays a big part in charity. As for charitable organizations, there is a lot of supposed corruption there, since they handle a lot of money, and they aren't taxed. I have heard that Red Cross is very corrupt, and that only a small percentage of their collections go to charity.

I don’t really believe in ask and you shall receive. The world is not really like what it used to be. There are so many people out there who still help others but they are not common and these days, people always want to get a return for what they have done for you It’s good to ask for help but I don’t believe in it. It works at times though but I believe in God and myself

> those who have helped have likely been burned multiple times in the past and they know, there is a high probability that any request they receive, is not what it is portrayed to be > I think that like me, a lot of people have become very cynical and skeptical of providing online assistance, and are preferring to help people directly instead This on several levels. Sibling dearest and I have intermittent discussions about how terrible we feel every time we see a post where someone is outlining some difficult situation that they need help with or some new diagnosis and our first thought is not "oh you poor soul how can I help" (if it's within our capability to do so) but "do you really". > it is easy to feel that we are the only ones in the world suffering Similarly to how people scared literally stupid will almost always make the worst possible decisions, people who are in a crisis (or at least feel like they are) are generally incapable of thinking of anything at all beyond what they personally need (or think that they need) right this very second. conspiracy theory it's why "they" (whoever they are) are constantly going out of their way to try to keep people in a constant state of crisis/panic, or at least feeling like they are

To be honest dear friend, I've often felt skeptical about online charity too. It's tough when you see people being scammed, but at the same time, there are those genuinely in need. Balancing caution and compassion is tricky. Thanks for this awareness big bro
