Brilliance makes the shot, hits the note, paints the masterpiece and solves the equation. It appears in every sport, discipline, art, science, every aspect of life and action performed. It seeks opportunity, and when found, strikes like lightning breaking the night sky; leaving the unprepared blinded - with thunder ringing in their ears. Quotes are penned, legends written and heroes are made on these acts that deliver sharp reality to a dreaming world.
Brilliance is not IQ dependent nor does it have a dependency on finance or popularity. It only has one addiction: Dedication. Brilliance takes an enormous amount of energy put into study, training and practice so that for a split second, it can be released decisively into the environment. Focus must be applied to each skill within the set, each technique available and each requirement. It must be patiently investigated, poked and prodded, questioned, attempted, developed, changed and retested. It is never accidental, brilliance is planned.
In my experience, perfection is unattainable. The pursuit of brilliance however is. To begin the chase it takes the understanding that it will take time and progress may be hard and often painfully slow. It will give the most frustrating, hair-pulling experiences alternated with moments of absolute bliss and euphoria. Mistakes lead to corrections, good turns to great, exceptional becomes the norm and flashes of brilliance start to reoccur, at times stringing together into a storm of precision. Eventually, be it days, months, years or decades, the flow of brilliance will be smooth, unwavering and rather than avoiding error, constantly search for new opportunities to throw itself against. And with each new challenge a demand for growth is delivered.
I believe there is one rule for attaining brilliance and that is: no one can say that you have achieved it. It is a feeling that only the individual can assess and for each person, the level required is personal and independent of all testing. At one point you may give it your all and face criticism and at the next you will be patted on the back and told you were perfect, while in your head thinking: I know I can do better. This isn't about being self-critical, it is about being focused on your personal evolution.
The legacy left by acts of brilliance can pass from generation to generation. It is our job to help those that follow learn, understand and practice dedication and then create a nurturing environment for experimentation. We must also take responsibility and set such a standard of brilliance in what we do - that they are inspired and challenged to improve upon it. Most importantly it is our job to learn and teach that despite what is believed, our environment, education or culture - Brilliance takes many forms and lies within us all.
