<div class="text-justify"> I was reading an article yesterday about how "Gen-Z" (these generational labels should all have sarcasm marks) believe that after work drinks no longer happen. It stood out, because an hour earlier, we had arranged with colleagues for afterwork drinks on Friday. One of the perks of having the office in the city, being in the office, and working with people you actually like. Perhaps the younger generation is correct though, because they are the ones who not only think that they shouldn't be at the office, but also tend to use people and then get rid of them when not momentarily useful. Most also have very little will to commit to anything, let alone their employer, so they are often skipping from company to company for a bit more money. If the have a "culture" as a generation, perhaps it should be, >Disposable. I get the feeling that there isn't really much of a culture at all, other than a near complete focus on the self. They talk about mental health and "self-care", but this doesn't seem to be about developing mental strength and fortitude, but rather about limiting exposure to difficulty. The label of "toxic" is applied to anything that they disagree with, anything that makes them uncomfortable, anything that indicates that they are wrong - anything that suggests they work, that they input energy into something other than themselves. As far as a community is concerned, > That is a toxic culture. I wonder if the people who think that socializing with colleagues after work is dead, just killed it for themselves, making it a shadow world they no longer have access to. Perhaps they believe it is dead because their self-centeredness has led to them just not getting invited. > "Even if they asked, I wouldn't go anyway" *But they aren't asking.* I like hanging out with at least most of my colleagues, as they tend to be interesting people, with a wide range of life experiences. At least in the older set. The younger of course are more of a mixed bag, with many of them not having a huge amount of life experience under their belt yet, and perhaps, they never will. It isn't that they haven't travelled, nor that they aren't intelligent, but their experience is largely consumptive, rather than interactive. They consume, not participate. i get the sense that when I was young, there was more cross-generational interaction, where people would spend more time with parents, grandparents and extended family. Perhaps because of this, there was less siloing, or maybe more understanding across generations, where people knew more about others. Now, it seems that with less overlap, it is more assumption based, which creates the perfect environment for social media and the likes of the article I mentioned above to create divisions. It is much like a lot of the political or religious discourse - arguing against the other, knowing nothing of the other. Looking at the picture above, another article I read a week or so back was talking about the *anxiety* younger generations if they have to speak on the phone directly. Apparently, they have a fear of failure because they have no tool to rely on, and they are expected to answer immediately. No Google support, no edits, immediate feedback. > Digital natives - Social fraudsters. I feel that in time, some of them *may* recognize that the path they have been conditioned to follow, doesn't lead them to some promised land of relevance, but the opposite. They are heading toward isolation, solitude, insignificance. They hey love themselves as they are, they want to be part of changing the world, but they can't even face the day in front of them without being triggered into tears, every time they feel the excruciating pain, of not having their expectations met. > I could be wrong. They might make this world the best place it has ever been, solve all the problems caused by all the generations that have come before them, and make society a rich garden of opportunity for all. What do you think? Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div>

I've never been a fan of talking on the phone. I'm just not good at it. I struggle to keep conversations going anyway. My wife gets invited to work stuff occasionally after work. Me, not so much. Which is fine, I've learned to accept it. Plus I probably wouldn't go anyway. π

It is going to be interesting in the future to look back at the data on changing behaviors if people. It opens up the nature/nurture debate. Some people are just not social, but is the percentage growing because of social conditioning? I think so. Same for many things, like mental health issues.

Socializing with co-workers is an interesting thing in Japan. During the 1970s, workers were expected to go out for drinking parties with their co-workers at least once a week, often more, and they would last until very late. Then on weekends they were expected to go golfing with the coworkers. This all resulted in fathers almost never actually being home. A joke arose that the generation growing up at this time was raised by their mothers and didn't even know their fathers because the fathers were always at work or with co-workers. This gradually lessened. Weekend golf trips disappeared as companies were no longer rich enough to afford it (golf is very expensive in this country). The drinking parties survived, but after 2000 even they started to go away. It all seems good from a work-life balance. More time at home with the family. But what offices found is that relations between co-workers suffered. People weren't as friendly to each other, they didn't work together as easily. So the drinking party culture came roaring back. Of course then COVID happened and things still haven't completely recovered from all those restrictions, so who knows what the future holds.

If a company wants to really build functional and valuable teams, they have to have a culture where people are able and not afraid to drink together. They of course don't have to drink, but you know, spend time together for the hell of it, not because it is forced. Innovation is rarely found in the office, but I have seen some amazing things develop around a table with a few half-drunk beers on it.

> They might make this world the best place it has ever been, solve all the problems caused by all the generations that have come before them, and make society a rich garden of opportunity for all. This is why war is necessary and so does the bad days in the life of any person. Less you are exposed to the bad days more you are likely to get damaged once the pandemic like event triggers you. Also taking over the current generation is lot easier than the previous generations in army context.

Hey, I am from Generation Z and I read your post with interest. I love observing others, understanding the world around me, and having deep discussions with people. I think it's important to consider some facts and potential reasons that might explain the behaviors you've observed, and why they might actually represent positive developments. Firstly, my generation's reluctance to engage in traditional practices like after-work drinks could be explained by a change in priorities and lifestyles. Many of us value a balance between professional and personal life. This isn't necessarily egocentrism, but rather a reevaluation of what is important for our well-being. Regarding the accusations of egocentrism and lack of commitment, recognize that we are growing up in a world very different from that of previous generations. With the rise in job insecurity and economic challenges, many young people from Generation Z are opting for less traditional paths, which can sometimes be wrongly interpreted as a lack of commitment. In reality, I think it mostly reflects a necessary adaptation to a rapidly changing environment. As for the anxiety related to direct interactions, like phone calls, I feel directly concerned. And I think this can be attributed to an era where digital communication has become the norm. This doesn't mean we are socially incompetent; on the contrary, we have developed new communication skills adapted to the digital age. Additionally, the increased awareness of mental health issues reflects a more empathetic and conscious society, not a weakness. To conclude this comment, even though I could say so much more, even though Generation Z may seem different in its approaches, it also has considerable potential to innovate, adapt, and meet the challenges of a constantly evolving world. Our ability to embrace change and critically reflect on our place in the world might well be one of our greatest strengths.

> Many of us value a balance between professional and personal life. I get this, but from what I have seen, there isn't the same depth of relationships as in the past outside of work either. There is a lot of solo time, or pseudo social time. When people are 40 or 50 and no one knows or cares about who they actually are, it will get very isolating and lonely. Lucky there are streaming services to take the mind off it ;) >With the rise in job insecurity and economic challenges, > In reality, I think it mostly reflects a necessary adaptation to a rapidly changing environment. Ever questioned why there is job insecurity for the young? I know employers who won't hire Gen-Z yet, because they know they talk a big game, but don't deliver. More trouble than they are worth. However, as they get older, some will mature in the workforce and be highly valuable. Most though, are setting themselves up to be disposable, so they better be ready and capable of alternate paths - otherwise, they will have nothing. >Additionally, the increased awareness of mental health issues reflects a more empathetic and conscious society, not a weakness. I am yet to see much empathy, awareness, or social conscience from younger generations. Posting about it on social media does nothing - where are the actions in daily life? >it also has considerable potential to innovate, adapt, and meet the challenges of a constantly evolving world. Yes. But, innovation takes creativity, it takes a willingness to work, commit, develop, and do the hard yards. It isn't fun and games, and it rarely feels good while doing it.

> I get this, but from what I have seen, there isn't the same depth of relationships as in the past outside of work either [...] When it comes to the depth of relationships, it's true that socialization patterns are changing. But I think Generation Z tends to favor quality relationships over quantity. This search for meaningful connections is not just limited to face-to-face interactions. Digital interactions, while different, are not necessarily superficial. Above all, they offer new ways of forging bonds, often based on shared interests and values, like every generation, but online. Loneliness and isolation are not inevitable; they are a concern for all generations, and our approach to socialization can evolve over time. I have friends who live on the other side of the planet. Although we've only seen each other twice at events, our friendship runs no less deep. We communicate very often, sharing experiences and projects, and supporting each other. And it's been going on for years! These long-distance interactions are rich and meaningful. They show that geographical distance is no longer an insurmountable obstacle to deep relationships. We shouldn't make generalizations, but I think only generation Z is capable of this. We've grown up in a digital world, so it's only natural that it should be 100% natural for us, whereas for other generations it may seem superficial. > Ever questioned why there is job insecurity for the young [...] You're right about many young people facing challenges in the job market. It worries my parents a lot, because I trained as a developer and they wrongly think that the profession is being "replaced" by AI. That said, it's important to understand the underlying reasons. Globalization and automation have transformed the labor landscape, making certain jobs obsolete and creating enormous competition. In fact, now that work is predominantly digital, everything moves much faster. This is less true for manual labor. In France, at least, young people who opt for a career in manual labor have no problem getting hired. There's even a lot of advertising on the radio and on social networks to promote this market, because we're so short of young workers (we're an ageing population). Secondly, today's young people are often looking for jobs that offer not only financial security, but also personal meaning and satisfaction. This second point is the most important. Companies are changing to meet these new demands. Once again, I'm basing myself on France, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were the same elsewhere. From what I regularly read around me, there are economic recessions, like the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. These have had a disproportionate impact on young workers, who are often the first to be laid off because of their lesser seniority. I've seen this a lot among friends. But most of them have had no trouble finding work, often where they feel better and are better paid. Perhaps we can see here proof of companies adapting quickly to the new generations and those that don't. But that would be the analysis of a company. But that would be surface analysis. Above all, today's young workers are often more open to non-linear careers, which can be misperceived as a lack of commitment or stability. Above all, young people tend to create work that didn't exist 5 years ago, and which might therefore be considered unstable. In particular, all the jobs that come out of the Web3. > I am yet to see much empathy [...] Once again, I'll speak for France. I sorely lack judgment for what is done outside, but it's already long enough to research one's own country. π The Fondation de France supports projects like "Ambassadeur en SantΓ© Mentale" (Mental Health Ambassador), where young volunteers are trained to raise awareness among their peers about mental health, recognize symptoms of psychological disorders, and guide towards professional help: https://www.ambassadeurs-santementale.fr/devenir-ambassadeurs/ It was especially the COVID-19 pandemic that brought to light severe mental health issues among the youth. For example, SantΓ© publique France launched awareness campaigns to improve young people's mental health, emphasizing the importance of taking care of their psychological well-being. These efforts demonstrate an awareness and a willingness to act on these issues through concrete actions, and not just posts on social media. Most of these actions are led by young people, in real life (IRL) as well as online. I understand that you might think online life is not "real life." I don't know how old you are, but you probably experienced your adolescence before all the social networks. Exactly where the body is built and consciousness evolves. Therefore, it's normal that your reference of real life is not the same as ours. But what needs to be understood (this is not proven and it's my judgment), is that I think Generation Z grew up in a world where information and personal narratives are more accessible than ever (thanks to social networks and the Internet). This exposure allowed us to develop a sensitivity and a deeper understanding of social and personal issues, at a time when we are in full development. This, in turn, generates greater empathy. That's why we are usually the first to defend causes such as equal rights, mental health, and climate change. This, I believe, shows our concern for collective and individual well-being. One last thing for this part, but I think it's important to highlight. We have been faced with challenges that you did not have when you were at your "development" stage (the climate crisis, economic uncertainty, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our education and social life). For most of us, we have forged a keen awareness of global issues and the need to take care of ourselves. When I talk to my grandmother about "mental load" or "burnout," she doesn't know what it is. Yet, it's in your generation that burnout appeared. In ours, we live with it and it's even tending to disappear. I talk a lot about the stage of "development," but it's because it's at this time that a generation is formed. At some point, we will stop evolving and looking for new trends, the future generation will do it and we will probably criticize it haha. > Yes. But, innovation takes creativity, it takes a willingness to work [...] To answer that, I did a little research anyway. I came across this article which is interesting, although I don't know what it's worth, so it's to be taken with a pinch of salt. https://www.deskbird.com/blog/gen-z-work-ethics-values Generation Z is pragmatic and independent, with 76% of young people believing that their career path is their own responsibility. It's a generation willing to work hard to progress in their careers, and doesn't hesitate to take the plunge if they can't find companies aligned with their values. We've grown up in a world where at school, on social networks, etc. there's a lot of diversity. It's not all rosy, there's a lot of harassment (here's another problem my grandmother thinks is a "waste of time on reflections"). Diversity is also a watchword for Generation Z, with a particular emphasis on questions of identity and orientation, in addition to race and gender. And it's from this huge diversity that GenZ derives much of its creativity. I'm not saying it didn't exist before. But it's accentuated now. So what I'm getting at is that GenZ has unique qualities that prepare it to meet future challenges. I'm short of examples, but we'll see in a few years.

Your reflections on generational dynamics are intriguing. It's essential to bridge gaps and foster understanding between age groups. Your observations about after-work socializing and the impact of a self-centered culture raise valid points. Let's encourage open conversations and cross-generational interactions for a more connected and understanding workplace. Each generation brings unique experiences β let's find the common ground.

Getting harder to find that, for sure. I heard a plausible thought these days. It was about lacking unifying visions that a nation's people or the global people would get behind. Perhaps fragments of societies do have their own now... subcultural visions... like the decentralized future through crypto industry, etc. But too fragmented, mostly.

I agree that moving companies is usually to get a higher salary quickly. But there are also some instances where it is for career growth. In a lot of companies in the Philippines, one only gets to a managerial position or a higher position once their boss gets promoted, moves to a different company, or retires. When the boss is only 45 years old, and the employee has attained the highest position after it, they will need 20 years to get promoted to that position. Those tend to go to a different company. Since it is difficult to find out the company system from the outside, if they arrive to a similar setup, they will probably stay for a year or two before moving again.

Yes I get that for managerial positions, but when a person is 26, three years out of university and has already been a "specialist" in 4 jobs, it is a farce. They are still padding their resumΓ© as they don't have much experience, yet are moving from job to job for money.

Yeah, that is true. I'm not saying it is right, but in this difficult economy they are more incentivized to do so. In the Philippines, fresh graduate salary is rather low. If they stay in the same company, they can maybe get 1-5 percent increase every year, which is really low especially with the small initial value. With 1-2 years of experience, they can get almost 50 percent increase in salary in a new company.

Honestly, Iβm also one of those people who believe that you donβt have to get to the office before you are able to work There are so many ways to go about it but Iβd never engage myself in fraud no matter what Fraud is rampant here in Nigeria though and it is rare to find youths who are not engaging in it

You don't have to be in the office to work, but there is more to a career in most companies, than a set of job requirements and tasks. I don't think I would do well in Nigeria.

Oh my days, does this resonate right now!

Skipping from company to company not only for a higher salary, but also due to getting bored. I couldn't believe when I heard it for the first time. I don't think that this is related to being self-confident. This is kinda being not aware of how life is difficult when you have to stand on your own feet.
