<div class="text-justify"> >I used to be a gadget person. Not only that, I used to go out on limbs with what I bought, where for instance, while everyone in Finland had a Nokia when I first arrived here (well before smartphones), I was trialing other brands, and facing the "ridicule" of not having what others had - that they believed in, that they thought was the best in the world. I am not an early adopter so much as someone who doesn't follow the masses. > Do times change? > Well, not many people own a Nokia phone these days. *But they are still on Nokia Networks.* It is funny though, because as most people reading my content know, I am pretty negative on the technology of today and the direction it is taking in terms of automation and AI, to the point that over the years, several people have called me a luddite. They say, "can't stop progress" so you better "get with the times". >Luddite /ΛlΚdΚΙͺt/ noun DEROGATORY a person opposed to new technology or ways of working. "a small-minded Luddite resisting progress" There seems to be the assumption that because I am negative about the future and think that the way we use the technology is having *profound* negative affects on our minds and bodies, with the young being affected the most, I don't really know what I am talking about. And perhaps they are right. But while not an engineer or in product design, I work in a high-end technology field that is at the forefront of its sector with its own artificial intelligence team, that has been working with AI for over a decade now. It has been part of the *generative solution* well before anyone was talking about generative AI. Though, it wasn't using an LLM at the time. > Perhaps this is why I am somewhat negative. Because I have not only seen firsthand how automation affects our work, but also how it takes work away from people who were very good at their jobs, but still couldn't compete. Not only this, because the more people have relied on tools, the less value they are actually able to bring into the workplace at all. For example, today I was with a client who was talking about unemployable young people who didn't have much to offer, and I asked why that was the case. He thinks it is attitude, which is only part of the story. However, I think it is also because information itself has changed value, where before *knowledge was power,* now knowledge is available to all. However, knowledge alone was never power, because for it to be valuable, it had to be applied in the right way. The youth today just don't have what it takes. >And I think that it comes down to experience. For them, "experience" is an event, where they skip from one thing to another, binging it along the way, collecting a lot of detailed information from the pros, and then picking up the next thing. However, there is no unifying factor, no career path, no prolonged interest that means that all of these random events can be amalgamated to compound against each other. It is like the knowledge of Google - *useless until applied.* > Gadgets as entertainment. This is all most gadgets are used for these days, where things are bought to entertain the mind in some way, to avoid facing the reality of the world. To avoid "real" experience. Whatever *real* might translate as today. Regardless, everything has become disposable, throw-away, productized - including people. And as such, everything falls unto the rule of profit-seeking, which means that it doesn't matter that much that young people are becoming increasingly useless, because the corporations are going to find ways to reduce their resource costs, which means automating as many of them out of employability as possible. I hope people are happy being entertained with whatever is given to them as a handout. > Generative AI/ Generation cry. Anyway - I bought a Kindle recently and it came today. I have always bought physical books before, because I like to have them on the shelf. However, they are getting far too expensive, especially since I don't get too much out of them since the stroke, so I haven't read for years. But, I am going to pick up the practice a bit with some tailored reading material to help improve my value as a human in society - which means professionally also. I might also trial an audiobook subscription to complement it. > More entertainment? But the real question is; > what am I going to do with what I learn? The answer very likely will be, that I won't be able to do much, because a machine will be able to do it better than I can professionally, which only leaves what I am able to apply personally. What I do know for myself though is, I am not going to be happy living on the couch, waiting to be consumed by a lifestyle. I hope I have more to offer than that. Taraz [ Gen1: Hive ] </div>

My friend @tarazkp, machines may be able to do things faster, with more details, things that we are not able to do by hand (like the processor in your PC), but the way they do it has been programmed by man, based on man's creativity, it's like the HIVE algorithm. In the 1970s, the same was true of the proliferation of computers and then of telephones and other screens. In the end, human beings will get used to all these changes. **I am optimistic that the future will be fantastic.**

I think you miss the problem with AI - a handful of men might program it with great creativity and skill, but it will replace millions of people who haven't the skill or creativity to come close to programming it, or learning anything useful that AI can't do better. You can be optimistic about the future, but I suspect that you and I are not going to see many great times in our lifetimes for human wellbeing, unless something drastic changes in the way humanity operates.

The funny thing is... is that the Luddites weren't against technology at all, they were against the machinery that was replacing workers and producing lesser quality products (textiles specifically)... which is what we should all be against. As consumers, why should we pay the same or more for less good quality products?

Quality is an interesting one, because that is a resource saving exercise also. I wonder what consumables would be like if they had to be made to function in pretty much the same way and provide value for a decade or something. A TV used to last twenty years or more - now?

Yeah, I really think this is somewhat due to companies being more beholden to providing shareholder value than quality products to customers. Needing to continually produce greater and greater profits every quarter means companies do better with planned obsolesce and saving money on materials. It's a win win for companies and a lose for both customers and the environment.

If you ever see someone whoβs really wanting a gadget so bad especially the youth, just have in mind that it is for entertainment. I donβt think it will ever be their plan to buy it just for normal use. So many people want to run away from the realities of life by checking so many fake things online to give them temporary happiness

I was also a bit of a technology person but I avoid a bunch of it like the plague because of how dangerous the stuff is for those that wish to do us harm. It's a slow cancer, with it growing and growing before it ultimately infects it all. I think the important thing is to have that with certain things. For example, I REFUSE and make comments to everybody that I know has one, to accept any of the "smart" devices in my home. Smart speaker, thermostat, washer whatever the hell it is, it's got fully nefarious intent behind it. None of this stuff is egalitarian, it's all meant to surveil us and allow the companies to sell our data. I even had a friend of mine take his stupid Alexa device out of the room when I visited because I didn't want it to listen for the simple fact that it had no business doing so. That being said though, it behooves us to be familiar with the tech, how it works and things of that nature for the simple fact of competitive edge. I don't know all the ins and outs of those things but I do have a basic understanding of it, and I think that at a minimum is good to have. Social pressure for conformity is pretty wild these days!

The luster disappears when the harm is so apparent. I get why some people have high hopes for it, but I think it is very shortsighted. With the listening devices, I am not even sure if it is avoidable these days. As soon as there is a phone, it is "open" for anyone without voice shot. There is a difference between understanding and using I think. A lot of tech parents keep their kids of social media - it seems to be the place for the middle and poor classes for the most part. >Social pressure for conformity is pretty wild these days! I don't fear tech, I just fear our capacity to use it responsibly. This includes myself. Recently I have cut back on my BS TV watching, YouTube gazing, and deleted most social media. I used to be more in touch with the latest trends, but since retiring, I want nothing to do with the field anymore. My son calls me a *Boomer*. I wonder if he knows the term *Luddite*? I doubt it or he would have used it on me already.

I think originally a Luddite wasn't totally anti-tech. They were more concerned about how a specific technology impacted on their jobs. Not entirely different to how most of us are concerned about AI right now. So in that sense, we are all Luddites. Anyway, hope you enjoy your Kindle. I also prefer physical books. I like the feel, I like the smell, I like seeing them on my bookshelf. At the same time, I can't deny the convenience of the Kindle. I can hold it in one hand, read at night, take my library with me anywhere, and the e-ink display is so crisp and easy to read. It's probably my favorite tech device.

> everything falls unto the rule of profit-seeking Fuck the shareholders! Think about the common good! I used AI to have it read your article to me today. My partner pretended to listen. She was kinda playing on her phone too. I definitely prefer audiobooks, but besides my consumption of Hive content and a few other sports/splinterlands sites, I'm not really reading much at all. Everything else comes from streaming/youtube platforms. When you take a step back, it really does make you think where is all this time going?! I need to use this energy, defend my frays, and crush these tournaments. To the battle fields!!!

Same question posed recently, I pondered the _consumption_ side of how do youth will be able to put knowledge to good use. Growing up we were told you learn, teach then grow. Consume knowledge as if filling a jug, then teach via sharing or putting into practice, in so doing emptying half jug, start learning once again, this way knowledge is retained. Full no more is able to be absorbed. Writing physically into a book, taking notes, one retains extra through hand, eye, memory, simply reading or learning parrot fashion disappears over time. AI does bother one with how it will be implemented, not something I would bat for in a hurry, musicians, artists may stand to lose thought provoking initiatives. AI needs to be addressed for benefits and/or risk.

>Writing physically into a book, taking notes, one retains extra through hand, eye, memory, simply reading or learning parrot fashion disappears over time. This is something I have long pondered. What kind of effect does it have even to be on a keyboard instead of with a pen in hand? Are we as connected, do we retain as much? I suspect not.

I think people losing jobs to technology has been the norm for the longest time. It was normally the blue collar jobs though, and a lot of people thought that the white collar jobs will be safe for longer time. So now that it is happening to both at the same time, it is pretty scary, and people don't know what to do. I think people should just start working on their dreams, and do what they wanted to do.

Honestly, I just feel like Iβm getting worse. The past few months have taught me how harmful the usage of too many gadgets or how harmful it can be to make use of gadgets all the time Now, itβs quite unfortunate that Iβm getting too much used to it even though all I do with my gadgets is work. Iβm about to start using glasses because it is affecting my eye and I donβt know how to stop this addiction

Actually, a lot of people don't realise that Luddites were not agasint technology per se. They were against the fact that technology could take away their jobs and workers rights. I love technology - but I would probably say I'm a Luddite too. If it takes away meaning and purpose in our lives, then we have a problem. I have to say I'm a big fan of audiobooks. I don't like Kindles, though I've tried them - they actually do have research that suggests you absorb more reading a physical book over an ebook. When you drive alot or even go on long walks, audiobooks and podcasts are so good!

>Actually, a lot of people don't realise that Luddites were not agasint technology per se. They were against the fact that technology could take away their jobs and workers rights. Yeah - it is the other definition that I didn't include - the source of it. It was superfluous for this post, but relevant in the future. There are going to be many more luddites like you and me in the future.

Wow I just learned a new word from this blog Luddite. Pretty educational. But with all honesty, it's so true, gadgets today seem more about entertainment than utility. Your perspective on experience and knowledge is really thought-provoking brother. Hope more understand this great perspective !PIZZA

Kindle is very good. I have a 2016 model and I read almost every day. I also download school literature for children there. I also have a large book with Lomonosov e-ink, but the Kindle is better. And I remembered my first push-button smartphone in 2004 on Windows. It was a great time for technology development. My friends were surprised that you can watch videos on your phone. I told them that in 5-10 years video movies will be on every phone.

It is funny - I watched TV on an LCD screen watch in the early 80s. It wasn't pretty, but it worked! The guy that had it was a family friend who has patents for a lot of tech that we still use today :)
