Enough to Last a Lifetime?

It is funny how timing works sometimes, as about a week ago I was looking into my retirement contributions and what the "expected" monthly income would be at the current projection. Suffice to say, that it *isn't going to be enough,* but it was interesting to see what my yearly contributions have added over the last two decades, which indicates what it adds "per month" to my future retirement income. There are some years where I added €100 for a future month, and then there are several years where I added €3 for the future month. Yes, a year of work, plus all the compounding for thirty years, will add *three euros* to my monthly retirement income.

However, while my own situation isn't great, it is *far better* than my wife's, who first of all, didn't know where she could find the information to check in the first place. Then, when she did go there (a few days later), she didn't really know what to make of it, and what things meant. However, at this point, her projection is 20% of mine - not twenty percent less - *twenty percent in total.*

There are reasons that women in general tend to have less in their retirement fund than men, with things like child birth and care and earning a few percent less than men (adjusted for variables), but I believe a lot of it comes down to the choices made. Anecdotally at least, while women tend to be better savers of money, they also tend to be less interested in the investment side of things. Who knows, this might be a genetic factor, which may be tied to other aspects like interest in STEM as a career - which can be tied to earnings since STEM fields tend to pay more. 

And, this is partly the case for my wife, who did take time after the birth of our daughter, but in part of that time she finished her Masters degree. But, this was when she was mid-thirties, so it was what happened prior to this that likely affected her more, as what she did was chose jobs that interested her regardless of the salary it provided, and without her degree, the earnings were even lower. Not only this, she took and still takes *zero interest* in investments, which means she also has close to zero knowledge in this area.

This isn't about gender-based differences in investment profile, though that is something to strongly consider, it is about the lack of understanding in general. As said, it is funny how things pop-up and align, where I was reading an article from Australia talking about "FORO" - *the fear of running out* - where 80% of people believe they have a 40% chance of running out of money in retirement, 30% expected they would still be paying off a mortgage in retirement, and 20% of retirees are *already* renting - and that is expected to grow significantly in coming years. 

Not only are people less prepared for retirement, they are also taking on increased debt and increasing overheads through things like rent. There are many factors for this, but regardless of the state of the economy or cost of living pressures, there is only one person who is going to be impacted by an unprepared retirement.

There are many people who could be impacted, where for instance if my wife and I are not prepared together, *both of our lives* are going to be affected, even if one of us has prepared. And then, there is our daughter, who at that point would be getting into her own career and perhaps starting her own family, but will also be somewhat tied to our conditions. I wouldn't want her to have to feel obligated to looking after us financially, and I would want to be able to provide her or our grandchildren a good foundation to build upon.

But as you can see, this gets into a grey area, because while I am supportive of my wife being financially independent, because our financial health is tied together, I also have to ensure that she is being considerate of *our family* position. And at current projections at least, we don't have enough combined in order to cover both of us. And, because we started pretty late in life together to have kids and buy a house, if we run the mortgage to the end( that isn't the plan of course), it is going to finish around when we retire. While that will help by freeing up obligation, it still won't help enough if our income is too low. 

I have *very little faith* in retirement funds being able to provide for people's future, because we are increasingly entering a world where not enough people are going to be working to cover them. Not only that, it is a rapidly aging population where the burden on retirement funds is going to be enormous, and for a few generations, it is going to be very painful.

Having said that and while I suspect I am not going to make it to retirement or far into it health-wise anyway, I still plan ahead as if I will - *just in case.* This means that I am going to have to do more than just top up my retirement fund, and likely more than what I would have to do if I was just preparing for myself to retire. Crypto is part of this, investments are part of this, paying down the mortgage early is part of this, working for bonuses at work is part of this....

Some people I have interacted with in the past have said things like "we can live off less than we think" and that might be true at times. However, we also aren't very good at predicting our needs into the future, and tend to leave out a lot. For instance, if we or one of our family members get sick and we have to cover costs of treatment and care, what then? I can live a very frugal life - but that is not what I want for my daughter, nor do I want to be unable to help if the need arises. 

If people are struggling to cover their living expenses now - what does that tell about the future?

My mother in law used to be part of a group of women that she started, who pooled their money and invested in different things. It was a pretty cool concept. In that respect I think she was bucking the trend. I enjoy looking at my investment accounts. I don't think I am at the point yet where things are really starting to compound, even after twenty years or so.

It's tough times. I also don't think retirement funds will hold out either as the economy becomes much worst. I know a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck and it only seems to get worst over time. It just makes me wonder just how much we would need to be covered for the future.

I think it is less to do with investments, but rather more with taking risks overall. Risk taking is also one of the reasons why women live longer than men. Stocks, Forex, and Crypto tend to be riskier options compared to 401Ks, properties, and other traditional investments.

We have something like a universal pension fund and almost everyone employed needs to pay it. The contribution isn't that high, but the expected retirement benefit is pretty low as well. What's even worse is that the fund seems to be getting mismanaged/stolen, so the current employees need to increase their contribution to continue the payout to those retired. It feels very much like a pyramid scheme. That's why I don't think I'm nowhere near enough.

And just as you imply, perhaps the most reasonable thing will be to prepare to say goodbye peacefully, without urgency and without resistance, to a world that at first sight appears to become quite complicated.

I think I've mentioned previously that when myself and a bunch of my friends were at uni, we were generally disdainful of investments for various reasons but the bottom line seemed to be "why would you ever even vaguely consider locking up money and rendering it unusable when you could be spending it instead".

<sub>"saving" money was a completely different thing altogether, everyone agreed that was good in principle but some of us were much worse at it than others, one of my uni friends couldn't understand how I could just keep coins in a jar to be changed out for notes later/maybe spent on something big we were saving up for as he apparently couldn't tolerate the sight of money just sitting there when there were so many things he could be buying with it instead</sub>

So some (like J) got into investing a whole lot later (better late than never?) and some/a lot/most? (like me and your wife) never got into it at all.

<sub>my crypto doesn't count as everyone knows magical internet money isn't real and the whole thing is just a scam that will absolutely definitely fail any day now just you watch</sub>

Sometimes I feel like we're all doomed but other times I'm still pretty confident of pushing things the way I want them to go :)

Suicide as a retirement plan sounds so macabre, still that was my pick, as it is the closest one to how I would put things:

**I'll work until I die.** 

"Work" in this case includes plenty of live, play, social interactions, etc. no matter the currency I am paid for it in return. This may be old-school fiat (if it's still around), crypto, or much rather the appreciation of the people around me, by doing what they do in exchange for the things I do. (Like it's always been in human society.) Once I am not able to do these things, I will gladly take the euthanasia rather than becoming a burden on anyone.

Hehehe, there's nothing wrong with drinking on the beach! But like everything else, it too gets old after the first day. 

Also 'working' doesn't need to mean back-breaking labor. There are so many things we can do, right up into old age, that may even earn us an income. And once none of that is possible... well, at that point I suppose even the beach would lose its appeal. And since none of us gets around our eventual departure, there is really no point in prolonging it.

Isn't that sad?  And even if you have saved enough to date, when you actually do retire the monetary value of that 'money' will be worth so much less due to inflation.    Time changes everything, they say, so I hope the numbers change for the better, but with the nutters running the world it seems likely to go the other way.

To be honest it's really tough to think about retirement when so much is uncertain. I also struggle quite a lot with planning, especially with different financial priorities. Keeping up with investments feels like a full-time job sometimes to me. However based on the way I keep investing everything and the fact that I'm very business minded I vote I'll have enough 💯

Hey cool I was able to vote on Ecency!

The option I had in mind wasn’t an option. It would be “Retirement? No damn way!”

Being a serial entrepreneur over the last decade or so, I am used to living on less periodically and taking opportunities to create my own income. Whatever we enjoy as a hobby or developed skill can be turned into income. Hopefully as effectively when I am a senior!

Besides that, paying off the mortgage and growing our business along with stacking bits of crypto will hopefully be enough to ride me into the sunset. 

Either that or I can finance the last option of the poll and die by being chased off a cliff by large-breasted women Monty Python style! ;)
