In my quietest hours, sometimes I think about all the alternative lives I could have lived if I stayed in either of my marriages (or if Sweet Jane never passed). A good heart lay wasted indeed, Jane was simply the best.

It reminds me of a conversation one can have with the higher self. An intriguing play with words/thoughts from the beginning of the adventure (the title of the poem) until the last breath, which is "too close to the tree." Interesting.

It's quite unlike your previous poems, at least of those I have read. More concise, open to more interpretations, has a broader feel to it, socially; the character is not as self-minding as many of your characters seem to me. The recurring "don't you see, you were there" motif draws me in. Not centered. I like this one. It's got good teeth and bones or something.
