Generating a healthy flow of thought
<div class="text-justify">

I think we can all agree, life isn't the easiest at times and while we live in a world that allows us to avoid facing the challenges of the moment, deferring them to a later point in time. But like most issues, putting them off doesn't make them go away, nor does it make them easier to manage. Sure, take a moment to catch breath by getting some distance can help build the energy required, but too long and the reverse tends to happen, where comfort built from avoidance takes away the motivation to actually deal. This leads to a cycle of avoidance and like an addict, more and more is needed to keep the hunger at bay, the cravings repressed.

![IMG_20210901_152855 (2).jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23zRvhHGbdrMgYEoBNk8r9dCJGkXYQQcmNDWYykyocfGWc9nZjkBLYTjDXdtovTcmdfHi.jpg)

I am fortunate to have found writing as a way to process my experiences, as it has helped me numerous times deal with some very difficult times in my life. It is interesting because it is kind of an "avoidance" measure too, like not looking directly at the sun, but observing circumstances from an adjacent perspective. For me at least, it is kind of like stepping outside of my own body and into a third person position, giving me at least the sense of a more objective view, as I disconnect from some of the emotional weighting that directs thought and decisions.

Over the years I have helped people do this in another way, as I train in English and most of my clients are non-native speakers of the language. This means that the words they use do not carry the emotional valence that those of a mother tongue does, so when they speak, they can speak without emotion getting in their way. As a result, many people open themselves up to me in ways they can't to others, and are able to talk about the difficulties of their own experiences from that adjacent and more objective position.

In the end, it is very much like giving advice to themselves, as they are "not themselves" in that moment, they are a friend to themselves, a proxy who is still invested in an improved outcome, but not attached as intimately to the outcome itself. as far as I have observed and the feedback I have got from people over the years, this one aspect of the training (this is not core and not even what I am employed to do) is worth the expenditure and throughout the time, the people I work with tend to get results beyond what they would have got otherwise.

The reason is that not only are they able to get clarity on circumstances and develop strategies to deal with them, over time, they are also able to clear these hurdles and reduce their cognitive and emotional strain, allowing them more space to deal with other aspects of their life, including improvement, not just facing the negative. It tends to lead to incremental results in multiple areas that compound across the board.

But, since I don't have the luxury of speaking another language, writing essentially has the same powers, which is part of the reason I am "addicted" to the writing process and also, why I think everyone should freewrite. For those who do not meditate, it is a viable alternative and perhaps even better in many ways, as it is a creative and develops something concrete from the process. This then becomes collateral to be used for improving the development process further.

Some people don't write because they feel they aren't good at it or believe thinking about a thing is enough in order to process it, but generally it isn't. There is no right or wrong in how one writes, but committing something to the page makes it far more real than the transient thoughts and feelings we have, and once it is on the page, it creates that distance to the words, making the reading back more like the friend listening, than the author writing. Whether a person is good at writing or not, doesn't matter at all and it is actually a lot like learning a second language and the more practice, the more natural it becomes.

While there is a lot of talk in the media about mental health issues, what I notice is that a lot of people are willing to find something to blame, but they expect the solution to be handed to them. In my opinion, the only one really invested in us as individuals, is us the individual and while people might want to help, we generally have the most influence over our mental and emotional condition. Taking ownership of our personal wellbeing might not close all the gaps and we might need outside assistance, but it puts us in a far better condition to be helped, with more insight into where we actually need the help.

It is interesting though, as we have seemingly created a world where we expect others to care about what we think and feel, yet we don't spend much time at all understanding what we think and feel as individuals ourselves. Seems untenable and destined to create conflict, externally and internally - which is what we were trying to avoid in the first place.

Writing can be like therapy. Do you keep a journal too? I have read articles recommending writing in a journal , it is supposed to help even more. I have tried it once in a while, it is quite interesting to turn back to what I wrote months ago.

I have never been able to keep a journal going beyond a month at max, but on hive even though I do not do like Taraz or a few others, everyday postings of thoughts and days events, I have commented a lot with my own thoughts and ideas on post, so a journal of sorts Hive has been for me for the last four years.

The ability to properly organize one's thoughts and put them in paper is nothing short of a blessing. I also underestimated and underappreciated this gift until I started taking writing seriously.

Beauty about it is that it gets better with practice no matter the inherent gifts one has to begin with

It isn't bad to have little influence, but too much might lead to unintended and unwanted control issues anyway - maybe that is part of the problem with the world - too few with influence, but what they have is immense.

It's nice that you helped people out to express better in English since I'm also not a native speaker and I often find it hard to tell the story as it is and share the same emotion I would do by writing in my language. Overall it's about people and we do need each other in the process of evolution.

I am a very secretive person. I tend to not talk about things and rather keep them to myself. Most of the time, I write them down so as to feel that somebody is listening to what I'm saying. Reading this post where you mentioned writing as a way to process your experiences made me feel comforted that there are more people just like me. Thank you

I just told someone that few weeks ago I had difficulty writing everyday.

3 days ago, that changed. I started doing the stepping out of myself process and writing as though I am telling someone my experiences

I must confess, the feeling is different, because I am able to arrange my thoughts, and see if I will be able to come up with solutions instead of running away from my problems.

This minute writing doesn't sound tasking anymore and I am grateful that the universe came to my rescue.

>Some people don't write because they feel they aren't good at it or believe thinking about a thing is enough in order to process it, but generally, it isn't.

This was me years back, I wrote a novel on Wattpad and it was doing pretty great but one day I felt it wasn't good enough so I deleted it and I stopped writing for a long while.
It took me a while to realize that writing was an art and the way I wrote was an expression of my art.

Nice article. It's true for me. I'm HSP, a sensitive person. I have a lot of emotions inside of me. Only writing can release all my emotions, and only writing can make me feel comfortable and light. Since joining Hive community, I have had the opportunity to write more. So I can control my emotions and personality more. Can say hive and writing is my tranquilizer at the moment.

The times I have decided to write something, it has been basically to communicate and share some stuff about which I am looking for some feedback from my readers on the matter. Yeah, just to see if I learn *(we learn)* something new, you know?

> In the end, it is very much like giving advice to themselves, as they are "not themselves" in that moment, they are a friend to themselves, a proxy who is still invested in an improved outcome, but not attached as intimately to the outcome itself.

Come to think of it, perhaps this is all due to the fact that I've always had and I am still condemned to have and conserve a very good memory despite of all the years that have already passed.

Thus, I feel like I am still able to establish those conversations with myself and give advice to myself *(without being myself)* through these **proxy** intimate friends you are talking about, with all the plot going on exclusively inside my own head without any need to have written anything anywhere before.

> Some people don't write because they feel they aren't good at it or believe thinking about a thing is enough in order to process it, but generally it isn't.

Oh! I'm well aware that I'm not very good at writing. But certainly, I believe and I'm still convinced that just thinking about a thing is enough for me in order to process it. :)

>Yeah, just to see if I learn (we learn) something new, you know?

Perhaps if you kept a journal you would learn something new about yourself. I think it is funny that so many people seem to think they know themselves so well, but also fail to recognize all of the internal conflicts they have. If they really knew, would they have those conflicts?

>and conserve a very good memory despite of all the years that have already passed.

A good memory is great, I think. I don't have one. However, I also think that memory is also a lie, as it remembers based on the perception of conditions, not the reality. So, what if you are holding things in memory that are accurate for what you experienced, but utterly wrong?

>But certainly, I believe and I'm still convinced that just thinking about a thing is enough for me in order to process it.

You should think about this more.

> Perhaps if you kept a journal you would learn something new about yourself.

As I said before, everything that I have lived and experienced in life has been automatically recorded, carved and embedded all around the walls of my convoluted memory in colorful audiovisual IMAX format. And for the same reason, over the years I have also learned to revisit and review those old memories stored in my head without any need to read anything I have written before to get to know myself better every day with no conflicts whatsoever. *And without even having to use a [SQUID](https://hive.blog/hive-168869/@por500bolos/squid-superconducting-quantum-interference-device) device. :)*

> However, I also think that memory is also a lie, as it remembers based on the perception of conditions, not the reality.

Exactly, that's correct. But if that were the case, also as lies out of reality would have been written and reflected in a journal at the time.

> So, what if you are holding things in memory that are accurate for what you experienced, but utterly wrong?

Well, then these *things* in my memory would be as utterly wrong as these same *things* also would appear written equally wrong in any journal.

> You should think about this more.

Oh! believe me I have already thought this more than necessary. It is already too many years of experience. :)

>I am fortunate to have found writing as a way to process my experiences, as it has helped me numerous times deal with some very difficult times in my life. It is interesting because it is kind of an "avoidance" measure too, like not looking directly at the sun, but observing circumstances from an adjacent perspective.

Writing also purify the process of thinking and helps to heal little from anxiety which sometimes uninvited due to some OCD disorder. Writing make us busy and also helps in sleepness disorder .
My one of friend always write in his free time in every category and he said it helps him avoid sleep pills as he get enough sleep naturally.

It is great for the brain and definitely helps with anxiety. At least for me, no matter what my mood may be, writing will bring me back to a positive baseline.
